About
Travelers flock to Sami Village for this cave with a deep blue underground lake. A guide will take you on a 15-minute boat ride through the caverns, feeding you snippets of geological and historical information. A caved-in section exposes the lake to the elements—visit mid-afternoon when the crystal-clear waters reflect the light with mesmerizing patterns, filling the cave with a magical, dreamlike glow. Tours that include both Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave on the itinerary are a great way to experience both in one day. If you’re traveling there on your own, get in early before the coaches arrive. – Tripadvisor

    Annoying boatman
The cave itself is incredible, worth the 40 euros we paid for 4 adults and 2 children. Being harassed for tips at the end of the ride kind of spoiled it though. Dude was practically peering into my wallet and pointing to the note he wanted

    Short but beautiful visit. Essential
Came early to avoid the reported coach trips. Straight onto a boat with an informative and funny guide. No pressure on the tips btw. Cost 8 euro an adult and well worth it. A stunning cave and history. The cafe on site was also excellent with some fabulous cakes and sandwiches for very reasonable prices. An easy 1km each way walk from the Ionian Emerald resort.

    Great fun and interesting
Hit and miss on the opening times. Advertised as 1000-1900 but on arrival at 5pm it had shut at 3.30pm. Returned before 1000 on our last day and it had opened and boat trips were well underway. Check before travelling. Our guide was fantastic fun and kindly offered to take photos with tourists phones. Very interesting tour, highly recommend.

    Good place to visit
Visited whilst on holiday. My advice is get there early and in any case before 10.00am. Whilst this is not the optimum time so see the cave it does mean you arrive before the coaches and other tourists. We arrived at 10am and had a small wait but generally got straight through. You queue under a small covered area, which is far too small for any long waits. It costs €8 per adult, children are €5. You then walk down some stairs and then into a tunnel. I mention this as if you are in the queue it is not immediately obvious when standing/ queuing in the car park. You step onto the boat and have a tour of the cave. This lasts about 10 mins max. The whole experience was good and the cave is beautiful, however I would not queue for any length of time to see it.

More of a photo opportunity than a day activity - worth it if you're very close by or combining with something else
It's really cool to see inside the cave but I'd say it's more of a photo opportunity than a day activity. The actual boat part is around 10 minutes in and out - lovely guys that work there who are full of knowledge and make it fun. Highly recommend getting there before 10:30am to beat the coaches If you're really close it's worth a morning trip over, and if it's a coach trip and a part of seeing other places it's also worth it, but I wouldnt make a big journey for just this as it may be a let down!

    Beautiful cave, chirpy boatman
We were staying a two-minute drive from the Cave, so made a timely arrival at 11 o’clock just as the queue was building on a hot, sunny day. By the time we left 30 minutes later the queue was huge and the tour buses were arriving. After a ten minute wait we paid and descended into the cool cave entrance, and we were straight onto one of the rowing boats. The boatman was good at offering a helping hand to those with unsteady legs. As expected it’s a brief but beautiful trip with shafts of sunlight making sections of the lake a brilliant azure. Even the deeper, darker expanses of the water allow you to see down towards the foot of the lake. The boatman helps you get a group photo with the best of the light in shot, which is worth adding to his tip box for. This is a quick-hit activity, but at €8 each, worth every cent.

    Beautiful, but rude staff.
My husband and myself drove up to the lake during our holiday in Kefalonia. We had been to the nearby Drogatati cave first, and had brought joint tickets to both locations. The lake was as beautiful and spectacular! However the staff on hand were particularly rude. First of all a tour guide tried to push us out of the queue and wanted us to wait until his entire tour bus had been on the lake, despite us already having tickets. He physically tried to stand in our way. Once on the boat, the chap who was punting us round at one point essentially asked everyone for tips. We weren’t expecting this, and in the post covid world weren’t carrying cash. There were several others on the boat who also weren’t carrying cash, including a pair of older Italian ladies. From then on he was spectacularly rude, and even refused to help the older ladies off the boat at the end of the ride. I helped them them myself in the end. Was beautiful place but would not go back if that is the attitude of the staff.

Stunning and fascinating boat trip to an unusual lake and cave
A stunning cave-lake, wonderfully scenic and really interesting. Our boatman was full of fascinating information and sang delightfully when we entered the underground cave. Avoid visiting on a day when the cruise ship is docked in Argostoli; apparently the queues are formidable when the cruise ship coaches are there.

    Melissani Caves
Beautiful caves. Best time to finish between 1130am & 1pm to be able to see the sun on the water. However this is also the busiest time so aim to get there at either end of this timeframe otherwise you may have a long queue.

    Gorgeous views
Beautiful caves, stunning lake, lovely boat ride. The man who rowed us around seemed kind and had a few facts to share. It was all over quite quickly, maybe ten min boat ride total. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Note that the people rowing the boat do ask for tips so if you visit you may want to consider taking a couple of euros.

Beautiful little cave with crystal clear blue water. Unique in that you visit in a little boat. The guides are very friendly and informative. Look for the eels

Visited at the start of May (greek Easter) to find no queues and peaceful viewing of the cave. Spectacular views of the deep blue to aqua coloured waters of the cave, staff were friendly and knowledgeable, 100% worth the trip and the 10€ entry

A place not to miss. You will discover blue colours that you have never seen in your life or can describe. Worth buying the Dorogati cave ticket as well. Be mindful that will be over 100 steps down and up!

We rented a car and drove from Lassi to the caves - the drive was an easy drive of around 45 mins. We each paid our €8 entrance fee and made our way immediately to the waiting boat. The trip on the rowing boat was about 12 mins - a fairly impressive cave, with very clear water. Lots of photo opportunities - tips were expected.

Definitely worth seeing! We visited this unique special place in September 2023 at around 10am (before the crowds arrived!) and got straight onto a boat. The water is an unbelievable crystal clear turquoise colour! A unique experience. The boat operator (captain?) was great too offering to take photos, explaining the cave and water depth as well as having a great sense of humour! Very reasonably priced considering the boat trip doesn’t take too long. Make sure to get there early and to go to the other cave system (10km away) as well as that is also worth visiting.

It was alright. A bit too much hype. Quite beautiful with the lights dancing in the water. The boatman was nice and told us about the history of the cave.
In and out within 15 min.

A bit disappointed as a smaller cave than expected. Went mid morning and didn't queue much. Got on the boat (17 in total, with guide, despite reading 12- 14 per boat) and this took less than 10 minutes.
Interesting but very overrated and expensive for what you get. 8 euros each.
Boat guy was attempting to be funny and clearly expected a tip. Did not tell us much about the lake.
Luckily we only travelled from Sami but would have been disappointed if we had travelled a long way.
