About
When we bought six hectares of the Brunate vineyard in 1970, we also acquired this small church, which was never consecrated. Almost in ruins, it was used to store farm equipment: the room inside was big enough to house a tractor. While art and wine are now seen as an almost natural combination, our family had no desire to become involved with contemporary art back then. It was the great British artist David Tremlett who, during an extended stay in the Langhe region one August, came up with the idea of how to give the chapel a new lease of life. He contacted his friend and colleague Sol Lewitt to work with him on this vibrant, colourful project, a holy place to worship joy, a country parish reaching out to the world.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nothing much.
Difficult uphill road that fills with mud and ice in the rain. Impossible to reach on weekends or holidays due to a crazy access ban for non-residents. If it were at least easy to reach I would understand it, but it doesn't make sense. The place is closed and currently surrounded by a construction site so it's not even worth the trouble to get there to take a photo. A ruin recovered and painted. That's all.

Not very accessible place, you cannot arrive by car on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays... and this is not signposted. The route on foot involves a steep descent and subsequent ascent: it is not for everyone. You reach a certain point along a dirt road where everyone parks and you can no longer maneuver. Watch out for fines! Lately there has been a construction site right in front of the building. Not worth it.

for me it was an experience worth it: both time and "effort" (the road to get there is uphill/downhill, certainly steep but not impossible). I wasn't prepared and I went with summer sandals at half past twelve on July 29th, yet I definitely don't regret it. It's worth a visit if you go to those areas. the colors it has are really beautiful, it's just a shame we can't get into it.

Beautiful, colourful, a small road to get there, near the village of La Morra, nestled among the vineyards. You can get there from two different roads, we opted for the one that came down from La Morra, we parked in a dirt clearing and, 700/800 meters down on foot, we found it in front of us. The climb that you will have to do on foot on the way back, if you have a stroller for example, can be a little tiring, but nothing impossible. For those coming from the other side, we saw that there were cars parked right in front. I can't say what the road was like on that side, narrow or what. I recommend the visit, perhaps doing some research first on which route is best to reach it

really nice chapel at least seen from the outside since you could not enter.
They are creating a new project almost opposite that should be finished in 2025.
If I were to go back there I would definitely be curious to see him.

I'm all about the art, but really what does this have to do with the beautiful land scape of the area or a church.

It is a colorful landmark, and a popular photo spot on one of several biking and waking trails in the area. The brilliant colors; red, yellow, green and purple, stand out amongst the green vineyards and are visible for miles.

This is called the Chapel of Barolo, but it was never used as a church, it was never consecrated. It was built in 1914 or 1915 as the chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, but it was abandoned even before its consecration.

It served as a Ciabot, a shelter for workers and animals during bad weather. Because of its shape and original intent, it was referred to as “the chapel.”

When the Ceretto family bought 6 hectares of prestigious vineyards of the Brunate cru in 1976, the chapel was included. It was in ruins after years of neglect. A few years later, during an exhibition in La Morra, the family met the English artist, David Tramlett, and asked him to restore the chapel. He was so happy that he involved his friend, artist Sol LeWitt.

LeWitt took responsibility for the external renovation, making it playful, lively, giving it a new life.

Tremlett’s interior decorations are warm and serene.

It looked essentially like this in 1997 or 1999 when we first visited La Morra, but it was faded. Today it has a fresh coat of paint inside and out.

This brightly painted chapel is a lovely place to reflect on the countryside below. It was created to be a respite, a purpose the artists maintained.

Great little side trip as we waited for our reserved time at a vineyard. Look for the "Big Benches" throughout Piedmont as well.
