Great historical sight. Sadly Turkmenistan spends billions in the capital building ridiculous monuments to their current presidents when they have amazing sights like this one that need some restoration and tourist facilities. Love the big mausoleum, the nearby minaret and some of the smaller mausoleums...More

the sights outside are nice though ideally visites with a guide that can talk a bit more about what you see. the city itself is a dusty, ugly border town with no restaurants and only one hotel that is extremely shaby (hotel urgenc). dont stay...More

Surprisingly well-preserved area, iin the middle of a desert, with walking paths taking visitors up close to the buildings Visit the mausoleum. Can get rather punishingly sunny, bring sunglasses.

Fascinating old buidings and setting. The area is spread out so having a car helps. Can be busy and hot so choose your time to go.

This area which makes it fascinating. The old mosque was spared by mister Dzenghis Khan himself and the inside is fascinating to watch. Also the largest ancient minaret in Central asia can be found here.

Is it really worth the effort of travelling miles to visit a place which has barely anything of archaeological/architectural significance? If you are genuinely interested in Timur, and what a desolated city looks like, it is probably worth the trip, but if you are thinking...More

A visit to Kunya-Urgench is very worthwhile. We have visited the site in May in about 2 ½ hours. Some comments and suggestions: 1. The UNESO-site of Kunya-Urgench is divided in two locations. There is quite a distance between those locations. The first area is...More
