Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

in summer 2024, a high clearance, non 4x4 car will be able to get as far as to the first bridge 42.394732595392966, 78.45381952588389 , but cannot proceed further than that due to the broken first bridge. the foot bridge however is still intact for hikers. road is dirt, gravel, and occasionally rocky.
therefore, if not hiking, the only way to go beyond the first bridge is if you have a 4x4 car with sufficient clearance to ford the river. i personally saw a nissan petrol successful in its endeavor.
entrance fees is 300 kgs per foreigner, and 50 kgs per car.

There are choices here, you can walk from Karakol into the gorge (remember you will have to pay entrance fee for the park at some point), but then you will probably not make it up to big mountain meadows at the end (would be a 6-7 hour one way walk). Our group was brought halfway with a big old army truck and started walking from there. Highly recommended!

Karakol Valley is great for all visitors of Karakol, who want to spend the day in the beautiful nature and don't want to overcome high altitudes.
The valley with alpine sceneries, with dirt road and paths, is growing slowly behind Karakol and offers several kilometres of easy hiking.
The valley ends with meadow, which unites the tracks from Jeti Oguz and Ala Kul. The small camp with tents and basic services is located here.
Karakol Valley is the national park, and the entrance fee is charged at the gate or by a ranger in the park. Keep the ticket with yourself, as you may be checked by another ranger.
It's good to take the taxi from Karakol, to drive you to the upper position at the valley, and not to start the hiking from the entrance.

Although pretty in winter this place is great for a long walk in summer. You can drive a long way up if you have a vehicle with good ground clearance otherwise walk and the river valley ifs very pleasant with plenty of places to relax alongside the river, or you can hike up the the lake and over to Altyn Arashan if you have a few days on your hands and do not mind a good climb to over 4000m. Great views and great place.

I visit this park usually every month with my bike it is a perfect way to get in better touch with nature. Karakol National Park is a great place to watch wildlife, the splash of Karakol River and for a small after stroll through the forest. This is one of my favorite go-to places around Ysyk-Kol Lake and I regularly bring my visitors here. Nice walking trails along the river and in three hours walking there is a nice place to stop for a picnic. This place is a gem of Teskey Ala-Too Range. Absolutely worth a visit.

It is so nice and refreshing to go trekking without a line of people. This part of the world is still not a huge destination and I could't have been any happier!

After our stay in Karakol we decided to head back to Almaty via 'the mountain route' Not at all advisable unless you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle - which we didn't! - However, we decided to have an adventure and travelled the mountain Gorge. The sight of yurts and horse wranglers out in the great wideopen was truly a sight to behold. We did receive some strange looks from the herdsmen - who were not expecting a saloon car full of tourists to be making this insane journey!
It was so worth it. The mountains, gorge and open spaces were stunning. I was a clear day with the blazing sun beating down on us, and the mountains seemed to go on forever.
If you are a risk taker - this is one worth taking. It can get a bit scary in places but do not miss out on this wonderful place.

Having driven up several valleys in the Karakol area, this one I find one of the most remarkable. I thought around every corner was yet another picturesque moment. I would prefer to hike single-track trails than the two-track road, but vehicles were relatively infrequently. Locals frequent the area setting up picnic sites for the day. Camping can be anywhere. Lovely cascades and river bends. Don't leave anything unattended unfortunately. The climb is gradual and not strenuous.

We travelled the gorges with the objective to look at the base of Karakol Peak and ski the area. In April with still snow on the ground, and several river crossings, horses is the best way to reach our base camp. We did not see a sole although several gypaetes (vulture type birds) were seen flying in couple. Sceneries are truly unique. We used the clear summer trails on the sunny side to pass the steep entrance of the valley leading to the higher ground. Snow can be tricky and we triggered a slide while on the flats after earing this typical whoooffff....but staying on the west and south aspects side seems better when we went. I would go back and set camp in this beautiful valley. I think there is a small fee to pay for accessing the park and it would have been paid by our lead logistic support, Alex or horseman lead, Almas - Bruno

This gorge comes into it's own once you pass the washed out section of the 4WD track. The valley will open up with pine tress meeting the valley floor with horses grazing peacefully and drinking from the stream. It is like a lost world. Idyllic and picture posted card stuff.
