I came to Savannakhet to apply for a visa. Quiet town with almost nothing to do. Savanxay Market was busy and interesting selling clothing, toys, household items and food. Thai consulate was disappointing. Being prepared with all the correct documents was no guarantee of receiving...More

From Savannakhet a border province between Vietnam and Thailand. Good place to take a rest with central plaza (Laos street foods, beers and locals). Central church of the city is lovely and full of flowers. Mekong river just take some walk to and oh so...More

Once a major commercial town, it's become a backwater with nothing much to look at: a 6-block downtown with an unadorned Mekong riverfront and lots of vacant lots and abandoned buildings. Best used as a stopover en route to 4000 islands, Champassak or central Vietnam.

There is no much to do in Savanakhet apart from walking around the center and the Mekong river. It is a good point to rest before taking a long bus to Vietname, Cambodja or Vientiane.

Can't disagree that it's a bit boring but still suitably relaxed to spend a few days. Wouldn't go out my way to come here and probably wouldn't return. You definitely won't be overrun by tourists
