Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoyed the choices of all the old favourites, it really takes you back to the good old day's.
However, we did feel the shop under the new owner is lacking in atmosphere and character.
The shop window looks uncared for too.
We came away quite deflated after looking so forward to going.

Never ever visit this sweet shop. The bloke who owns this shop is the most rude and ignorant I’ve come across. Especially don’t take kids in as kids in a sweet shop don’t mix with this fella. Don’t buy anything in here.

We always visit the sweet shop when we're in Pateley Bridge. The friendly and helpful staff are more than happy for customers to wander around and think about their choices, and they'll give advice and information if needed. A must for anyone who loves sweets - highly recommend!

A beautiful little sweet shop situated a stones through from the main car park.
Although the sweet shop is fairly small, there is plenty of choice.....and there have been one or two famous visitors to the shop also.
Well worth a quick visit even just to say you've been.

We always make a point of visiting this little sweet shop whenever we travel to North Yorkshire and never spend anything less than £15 on sweets and goodies. It's the highlight of my daughters holiday, she saves up all of her pocket money prior to our holiday for her visit. However, we visited again during the school summer holiday this year, selected many items and then my daughter, very politely, asked the proprieter 'Gloria' if she could mix 2 x 50g portions of sweets in the same bag for her as 2 x 100g would be too much.
I was extremely taken aback by the lady's attitude. She very angrily and abruptly refused, without any explanation whatsoever. My daughter was extremely upset, more so by the manner in which she had been abruptly spoken to, leaving me to reassure her and explain that the shop will not sell anything less than 100g bags. If this is shop policy, fine, but please explain this when children ask for small amounts.
I have to say, this is the first time this has happened but I'm not sure we will be revisiting again.
This is a lovely little shop which by its very nature will attract children, the shop wasn't particularly busy at this time either. My daughter has unfortunately said she doesn't want to return to the shop again. A little more 'child like approach' would be advisable.

I too received an unfriendly welcome, when asked if i could try having 2 different types of sweets in one bag I got a very rude obnoxious reply, no we are not able to do that, was his answer ! when asked why we have one rule not allowed to mix the bags, in other words wanted you to spend more money found the shop very expensive, as i wanted this for my grand daughter and wanted her to try different types of sweets I left the shop without buying anything at all! and i wont ever go back in either if they can speak to all there customers like that i am surprised they will have any left!!

Might be the oldest sweet shop in England but could easily win the title of unfriendliest.
Overpriced sweets.
Totally disinterested in customers. Only want your money. Don’t bother. Take a photo and walk past.

I went here with the kids and spent a reasonable amount on sweets. As a final part of my order I asked if they would split 2 flavours to make up the 1/4. I was told "No. We don't and we haven't done that for the last 25 years". I felt like saying that I don't suffer poor customer service and haven't for the last 48 years. If I'd been on my own I'd have told her to cancel my order and put the sweets back in the jars. But that would have upset my kids so I didn't. I run my own business and pride myself on putting the customer first and listening to them. The pair who run this shop don't really understand what customer service is. It will be a great shame if this beautiful shop that has been around for 100's of years goes bust because of the stubbornness of the current owners. Oh yes and very petty behaviour. Such a minor request turned down. Shame.

We came to Pateley Bridge and during that time visited The Oldest Sweet Shop. Walked inside and was impressed with the selection of different sweets on offer. My daughter wanted to buy some of her friends some sweets as a present, when asking if she could have some bags made up as the ones on offer were too expensive as she wanted quite a few. She was then told abruptly they only sell sweets by the quater (my daughter being 14 didn't have a clue what he was talking about) Then by passed my daughter and proceeded to serve another customer. I found the man behind the counter very rude and obnoxious and wouldn't visit there again not when there so many oldest sweets shops in the country. They obviously don't need the money that much oh well your loss.

The woman behind the counter was so rude and unfriendly to us. They clearly should have a sign saying children are not welcome. After telling me to tell my son not to touch the wrapped sweets in a jar at the counter (that he was selecting to buy), I said 'maybe this isn't the place for us then. We'll just go' she nodded and said, 'Thank you'. My son was completely well behaved and did nothing to deserve being treated that way.
I heard another customer ask if he could buy just one piece of fudge as he didn't want a whole bag. He wasn't sure if he liked fudge but said it looked so good. The woman said no.
In a shop that cared about their customers, the man would have been invited to taste the fudge.

As a small family business we welcome feedback from reviews.
We are passionate about our shop and the service we offer to customers young and old alike
We are pleased to be able through our recollection and the support of recordings to help you to a clearer understanding of the situation described.
You appeared understandably to be occupied with our vast selection of sweets & chocolates. Your son meanwhile was being observed to pick up a number of sweets & chocolates from displays squeezing them and throwing them back.
We appreciate you may not have witnessed this but once he did this in front of both of us, I felt it was an appropriate moment to request he stopped picking things up and squeezing them. Yes the chocolate was wrapped and your son may have wanted to know how hard it was but he should have asked.
For whatever reason you refer to another customer requesting to ‘buy’ one piece of fudge. You say the answer was ‘no’ but do not finish the rest of the sentence. No was part of ‘no sorry we do not sell individual pieces, it is sold by the quarter of a pound’. The customer from abroad later purchased a quarter pound of fudge.
We hope you read this and it helps you to a clearer and more accurate understanding of the situation which we are sure you innocently misinterpreted in your review.

I don't own the shop, I only visited. But they do stock a vast array of sweets, so there's a fair chance they stock them. If you're making a special journey to get some you might want to ring them first.
