Karakul lake is a large lake high in the Pamir mountains (altitude 3914 m). About 33 x 24 km, it covers 380 square km. Highway 41 follows its southern shore, offering stunning views of the blue lake nestled against the snow-capped Pamir mountains. Its waters...More

Large blue lake near the Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan border. Village nearby is as you’d expect of the region, lake itself is impressive due to its shear size and the fact that it’s fringed by snowcapped peaks, including the 7,000mtr + Peak Lenin. Worth a stop...More

We are glad we chose to stay here overnight. Lake was beautiful but even more interesting to walk around town to watch local people going through their daily life.

Lake Karakul (a bit redundant as "kul" means "lake" in Tajik) sits surrounded by mountains. It's a beautiful setting and worth spending some time to see. We sat in the sun on the shore and just enjoyed the beauty and the day. Local moms and...More

Stopped along on our way to Murghab. The lake is very pretty, there was still some ice on it at the beginning of may. The region is known for its rough weather, dress warmly.

You don't have to stop because you can see it from the road. But you will probably be staying in Karakul which is a rather strange, high and cold settlement.
