About
Riisitunturi National Park represents the fell and hill landscape of Koillismaa district at its best. The most valuable features of Riisitunturi Fell are the colourful hanging bogs on the slopes, and on the top of the fell the breath-taking scenery over the Lakes Kitkajärvet and the forest landscape of Posio. In the snowy forests, trees are covered with ”tykky”, frozen snow deposits, which in the blue moonlight just seem unreal.

Riisitunturi National Park is a great place to enjoy beautiful landscapes, peace of nature and great outdoors. There are different routes for longer hiking trips and shorter ones for day trips. The shortest route is 4,3km long, also good for families, and other routes are 10+ km. The longest hiking route is 29km. In the winter there are excellent possibilities for cross-country skiing in Riisitunturi.

I would hate seeing too many tourists in this fantastic environment, so let us start with the negatives first: it is quite a drive, and at this time mid March really cold and windy. You also need a serious hike of at least 3.5km through high snow to come here, so snow shoes will help. But once on top it is difficult to describe the wonders of nature you see here. Just fantastic how water got stuck as some kind of snow around the trees, adding up to 3 tons weight. These views are also on other spots in Lapland, but not all are so nice in location.

There is no words for the beauty of Finnish Lapland... Riisitunturi with snowy trees and full moon is magical, but imagine how it all influences you when there is northern lights burning over the frozen sky... Don't try imagine it, just watch this picture from the frost coated small hut standing there.

The forest is truly enchanting in the wintertime. When you move up the hill from the parking you will walk through the trees that are packed with snow, like how you see it in typical Lapland promotion pictures and videos. When you reach the top of the hill there's less trees and it looks more like a great snowy desert with some weird snowy cactusses. The view from there is amazing. There's plenty parking space, some toilets at the start of the trails and you can go forest skiing, cross country skiing, etc. Must visit.

A beautiful place to visit. The best way to get there is to go by skis, you can choose different lengths of tracks to go there. The signage regarding the ski tracks could be better though.

This is a lovely place for hiking with your dogs. The 4 km long hike "Riisin rääpäsy" is quite easy. Old spruces with old man's beard are magnificent. There is a path to the peak in summer and also in winter. In winter you can see lovely snow covered spruces. There is a breathtaking scenery from the peak. You can see lakes and other fells like Ruka. This fell is my fav in Kuusamo.

We were there hiking with our snowshoes and it just so happened to be a very bad weather. Snow was coming down on us hard and we couldn't see almost anything. If the weather would have been nice this would have been a better experience!

We visited in May, in the late evening. It was raining so the view was not as good as it would otherwise be but it was beautiful nonetheless. Good walking gear is essential although the route is not especially tough, it is very exposed to the elements. In places the path was a bit challenging because of the ice but mostly it had thawed and it was also early enough in the year for there not to be too many mosquitos.

I loved this place even though it was misty and you couldn't see very far, the snow was immense and the White Queen could easily have come into view. Equally the moving topiary from the Shining were there. Fabulous place.

Buon viaggio

Hi,
I am planning to visit the Riisitunturi National Park around 20 Dec 2021 so just want to know the answers for the following:
1) Will the national park open around Dec 2021? What days and the timings?
2) Is December a good time to see the snow covered trees like a winter wonderland post card of lapland, finland?
3) Is it allowed to stay for 1 night in the free wilderness hut inside the park?
4) Do I need to pre book the wilderness hut for a night stay from any website?
5) I am planning to stay in Kuusamo so that I can visit both Riisitunturi and Oulanka national parks from there, but is the public transport (bus) available to reach there from Kuusamo?
Thanks in advance for the response.
Thanks!

Buongiorno! Posso sapere per favore se la visita al parco è fattibile in autonomia oppure occorre fare una escursione guidata? E' facilmente raggiungibile in auto? La visiteremo a inizio dicembre.

Can anyone tell me if there is much difference in the scenery of the trails? I will be there in January so not wanting to be out too long in the cold, but also don’t want to miss out on the scenery. Thanks!

Hi,
now you are going just to the right place. The snow art is beautiful there. For short time visit it is best just leave your (4W-) car to start point = parking area and just ski stright to the top point(s) and by another route back. You will see a lot.

Hi, does anyone know how to go by public transport from Rovaniemi to here?
Written 26 August 2018
There is a taxi in Tolva, and on workdays there are few buses per day from Rovaniemi to Tolva.

I am coming in late December and would love to visit Riisitunturi, is it best to stay nearby or could I easily visit from Rovaniemii?
Written 4 October 2016
There are quite few bus routes between Rovaniemi and Riisitunturi. Winter time is better you Don't hire car. (In Australia you cannot learn winter time driving) Better to stay in Posio (charming village). Do contact Himmerki or Kirintövaara. They are serving you also in December.
