Magnificent area for bird observations
May 2018 • Friends
An early morning visit to this area showed up to be rich in birds. Visited various observation locations and was able to see birds on land, in marsh, on water and some migrating geese. Some of our observations were: Thrush nightingale, Willow warbler, Common snipe, Lesser spotted woodpecker, Eurasian curlew, Eurasian bittern, Common goldeneye, Common pochard, Whooper swan, Western marsh harrier and Rough-legged buzzard

Finland's best bird wetland
Jun. 2015 • Family
Siikalahti Bird Lake is actually the overgrown eastern bay of Lake Simpele (Simpelejärvi). It is known as the best bird wetland in Finland. You can see 200 different bird species there - during one day perhaps 100 if you are lucky enough.

Siikalahti is situated about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from the center of Parikkala municipality. Turn off the highway 6 at the Kaukola turn-off. Siikalahti nature information hut (no entrance fee, open April-October) is situated 200 meters (0.12 miles) from the parking area. This parking area is the starting point of the nature trail (1 kilometer, 0.6 miles) which leads to the bird watching tower.

There is a dry toilet at the parking area but it is a good idea to take your own toilet paper with you. There are a cooking shelter, a picnic table and a small place for tents next to the nature information hut.

If you are an ornithologist or another nature lover, you can spend several days here. If you only want to have a day visit (the nature information hut, the nature trail and a short visit to the bird observation tower), 1-2 hours is enough.

I already visited this attraction as a child in 1970's. Nowadays I visit Siikalahti with my own children. It offers something for all nature lovers.
