An absolutely wonderful area of woodland so close to the town. Well worth the half a day it should take you to fully explore. Worthy of note are the Ice house and the Shell bothy. A mornings walk well spent.

Dunnottar Woods, at the southern end of Stonehaven , are the remnants of an estate created in the early 1800s for a wealthy merchant , Alexander Allardyce. Dunnottar House is no longer, but there are still poignant reminders amidst the trees that hark back hundreds of years - like the enchanting “shell hoosie” folly, Lady Kennedy’s Bath built into the side of a stream, and the Gallow Hill Ice -house.
It’s a 32 hectare deciduous forest with 2 pretty streams running through it - the Glasslaw and the Carron, and has plenty of trails and paths, plus a large open green meadow. May is particularly lovely as there are wide patches of glorious wildflowers including bluebells and pink harebells, and the ferns are just unfurling. Lots of bunnies 🐇 jumping about, but not lucky enough to spy a resident squirrel.
At the moment the main entrance is closed off due to work taking place to clear away storm damaged trees - so please take care if on a lesser path.

Lots of differing walks, mainly in the woods. Enough variety to keep young children occupied, but also less challenging parts for older people. Good car parking but no other facilities.

Pleasant walk with picnic area. Meandering walks through tree lined paths. Car parking off main road but access points from various other places.

Several car parks and roads running through the site. The paths are well made and the interpretation boards are well designed for negotiating your way through the woods. Couldn't find the ice house however the walled garden is hard to miss and the shell house was an easy find. Lady Kennedy's Bath is an unusual relic and the various foot bridges give a good view of the Glasslaw Burn. The 'Dunnottar Woods and House' booklet is a great help if you can buy a copy from the Tolbooth Museum before visiting.

Excellent walks particularly if you have a dog! The paths are easily accessed and there is a lot to see including the "Shell House.

There is a variety of stony paths through the woods - possibly a little muddy in places, especially after rain. And sometimes the path is adversely cambered if you're not sure-footed. Take good shoes - and a map.
We walked from Stonehaven open air pool along the road, and up to the woods. Then past the old ice house, and down to the A957, turning right on that and walking briefly along to turn left down Glaslaw Burn lane to Dunottar castle. We returned to Stonehaven via the spectacular clifftop path. It's a wee bit stony or rough in places, but easy to follow mostly, with some views that make it well worth the effort. It's not too difficult in my view. But I was disappointed in the woodland itself. There is a distinct lack of variety - especially concerning native trees. The sycamores that prevail in Dunottar wood are effectively weeds that spoil the woodland, it lacks the richness and colour of other more mixed woodlands.

There are several clear paths through the woods that you can take to get out (and back into) Stonehaven. Easy walking, pleasant environment.

A must visit place for all the family. Free car park leads to the red route walk. Follow the stream to see Lady Kennedy's Bath. Shell house walled gardens, there is a large picnic area too. The walk can vary between 1 to 2 hours

Very interesting varied walks in well pathed Woods.
Often see wild deer roaming and lots of other wildlife.
Definitely worth walking in. We like how you enter through the town and exit onto the cliffs above Dunnattor Castle.

Can I walk from Queen Elizabeth caravan park to the woids?
