Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

if you travel to Jogja this is well worth a trip for a few hours.
I went here when we traveled to the BoroBudur Buddhist temple. After the Buddhist temple our driver Juan (can be hired through many apps) took us to the 'Church of the Doves' it was near a small village where you have to get a jeep up to the top of the hill (would recommend the jeep as you can walk but its very very steep) the weather was hot but the forest offered some great shade!
The church its self was a bit tired but great to see and the views from the head were spectacular.
There is a small cafe in the tail feathers which does some traditional Indonesian food, sosis bakar is always a good choice (sausage on a stick) .
you can sit and eat and enjoy the spectacular views.
there is a religiuos element to the building and they respect many faiths and provide private prayer rooms in the cold interior.
I bought several items from the little stalls outside the church and posed for pictures with the stall owners children as they don't see British people often.
Very cheap to see and not too busy (unlike some of the attractions in Jogja) it is well worth the car ride, its not far away from the Buddhist temple but it is off the beaten track in the forest.

As i am not religous i normally give churches a wide berth, but the unusual nature of this one intrigued me and the views from the top were great. The path up is very steep, but only about 200m long. 4x4 cars offer to drive you up and down. Had it been wet i may have considered it. We got there via a taxi from borobudur for 75krp return as he had to wait for us. Entrance fee was 25k each, and 10k rp parking fee for the taxi.

This place was really unique, if you going to Borobudur temple, spare some time to go here. Really good to know the history, and also spare some time to pray here. Even it called as a church, actually they said "house of prayer for every Nation" so every religion can prey here, as long as you feel comfortable.

I mean, it is exactly what it claims to be. I can't fault it that.

But donate your money instead! Indonesia has a lot of people who need more help than these clever folks. The place isn't bad, but it's definitely not worth the price.

A good view of borobudur though!

I spent only for 45 minutes in Bukit Rhema bcs I need to go travel to another beautiful places in Jogja but I feel very Comfy yet secured with the health protocol from the staff during this corona virus issues , they really handle it very serious , such as we were devided per group to tour the whole area maybe 4 persons per group and lucky me when I was there , not so many people visited the place and hand sanitizers are provided every corner area and staff encouraged all visitor to use it. I really happy and feel relief with that kind of rules in this remote location.
And I would like to thank you to Mas Afif who give us the warmest welcome and his sincere hospitality and give us complete explanation such a great communicator abt the history and answered our some questions there in the first time and thank you to Mas Aveq too who incharged on the floor before the roof top , he is so polite and friendly and very care bcoz he remind us to be careful on the stair to the rooftop. And guess what it was amazing on the roof top, I was amazed of how great thou art. I can see beautiful view up there and Borobudur view but they set limited time to be there but it was okay..
so my 45 minutes is priceless , meet awesome people with sincere hospitality and with best view up there and new historical story that I never known . Thank you so much

Do I recommend going to Gerja Ayam? I don’t know, man. And, regardless, you’ve probably already made up your mind anyway.

To be clear, you’re not coming here for the “Chicken Church”. (Or, at least, I hope you’re not.) You’re coming here for Borobudur Temple. But, while you’re in the area, you should absolutely take time to visit some of the gorgeous countryside and hang out in the local villages.

The area around the church is part of that beauty. I biked here from Borobudur, and then onto Tanjung Sari Village. I thoroughly enjoyed that ride, and everything I saw along the way. The rural road here goes past some lovely rice paddies, wood farm houses, bamboo bridges, rivers, &c.

The church itself is, of course, an oddity—perhaps more notable as a piece of trivia than a destination. It’s kitschy, wierd, and makes for an amusing story. That said, the entry is expensive (for what it is), much of the interior is unremarkable—though some of the wall art is fun—and the views are admittedly excellent. Also, the small cafe (in the chicken’s butt) is surprisingly tasty.

I went because I like bizarre follies. And this definitely qualifies as a bizarre folly. I was happy with my visit. But for most people, I’d recommend just going to nearby Punthuk Setumbu. It offers better views—including a view overlooking the Chicken Church, so you can still get a photo of it.

As far as getting there, I really enjoyed biking. But it’s worth noting that the main road there from Borobudur is a steady climb, and then the road up to the temple is quite steep. And that’s even more true if you’re coming from the south. I am not a good enough bicyclist to handle that, and had to walk a portion of it. (And unless you hire a Jeep, you have to walk to final stretch regardless.) I doubt most cars could navigate the southern route, and certainly not in the wet season. It’s really steep!

If you do go, I still recommend visiting Punthuk Setumbu. In fact, you can take a shortcut up there from behind the church, which is more direct than backtracking to the main road.

It is cheap to enter and quite far to get too! I wouldn't recommend going by motorbike. The top of the chicken is really small and they limit the number of people that can go up. It wasn't busy when we got there at 5ham to see the sunrise, but as we left people were waiting to go up.
Sadly it was very cloudy and we didn't see the sunrise, but it was still nice to visit the church. YOU DO NOT SEE BOROBODUR FROM THE CHURCH.
There is pretty cool art painted on the walls as well. :)

Another spot to catch the sunrise. Make sure you are on top of the chicken's head to have great 360 degrees view

I was on my motorbike and also to turn in from the main road to the chicken church. A group of men was waiting on their motorbikes and they told me the road is closed. They offered to take me via another route for 40,000 idr. I refused and he lowered it to 20,000. I felt it was a scam but I let them take me on another route.:( Liers. The road is perfectly fine. I took it on the way out and they were no longer there. Arghhhh just ignore those men and go ahead.

Church is nice. You can go to the top for a nice view and also have some fried tapioca at the end. Steep 5 mins walk from the parking place.

Please can you change the name of this attraction as this place of prayer is not a chicken. The design is of a Dove with a crown on its head. Depicting PEACE for all. This place also isn’t a church, it’s a house of prayer. The residents find it insulting calling it a chicken. So please change the title of this attraction. Do your research correctly.
