RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre sits amidst the stunning Caledonian...

RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre sits amidst the stunning Caledonian pineforest, just a short walk from the shores of beautiful Loch Garten. The centre is open every day from April 1 to the first weekend in September, though the rest of the reserve is open all year round. It opens at 10am till 6.00pm, and last entry is at 5.00pm. There is a viewing area in the centre, with binoculars and telescopes to view the ospreys and other wildlife, plus live hi-definition CCTV pictures to give really good close up views of the birds on the nest. Red squirrels can often be seen on our feeders and a large array of small birds visit too. There are always knowledgeable and friendly staff and volunteers on hand to help you make the most of your visit and presentations on the previous year's osprey season are also given. There are activities and games for children both in the centre and on the walk up from the car park. The Osprey Centre shop stocks binoculars and telescopes, gifts, toys, cards, hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks. There are picnic benches and garden benches outside if the weather allows! Two beautiful woodland walks take you through magnificent pine forest to tranquil Loch Garten and Loch Mallachie - one accessed from the Osprey Centre car park and the other from the nearby Loch Mallachie car park.

It wasn't the best of afternoons weather-wise for our visit but both adults and the two youngsters were out and about, on the nest and on a nearby tree. The RSPB facility itself is excellent with good cctv coverage of the nest site and adjacent trees where the Ospreys spend time. The staff are both very knowledgeable and helpful.

I have been here hoping to see the osprey, but there was a just his nest and it was very far (maybe 1 mile or so) and could be seen just with TV and binoculars. No chances to take pictures even with an extra zoom (600mm). No chances to see the osprey closer. If you are a wildlife or bird... More

Thanks for your review and we're sorry you were disappointed by the distance between the centre and the nest. I'd like to reassure you and also our other visitors that the distance between the centre and the nest is actually only about 250metres! We get many photograpers visiting and many satisfied customers too, so it's disappointing that you didn';t have... More

The staff were lovely and very helpful. the activity boxes set up the side of the walk to the centre were good for our 4 year old. The two year old loved splashing in the puddles. We were all delighted to see the Osprey so clearly despite the weather being poor. The children all enjoyed seeing the little birds feeding... More

The staff go out their way to be welcoming, inclusive and informative. Kids activities along the path added interest. 'Sarah' was really interesting and knowledgeable explaining both the osprey and the other wildlife. It's quite expensive at £5 per adult and £2 per child but an experience nevertheless.

Thanks for your review, Sarah, much appreciated. I'm sorry you found it quite expensive - we do have a family ticket for £10, which is for up to two adults and four children, and of course, you could always suppport the work of the RSPB by becoming a member and then your entry would be free! Hope to see you... More

A chance to see Ospreys breeding in the wild, through supplied scopes and binoculars, with the naked eye (just!) or on the CCTV set up in the hide. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable staff on hand to help, assist, and answer questions. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the outdoor area for attracting small birds and... More

Thanks for your review, Gasman! We're delighted you had a good time. The area you refer to for feeding red squirrels and small birds is still very much in use, but maybe the feeders had been emptied when you were there? We get regular visits by red squirrels in particular. Those feeders tend to get more use over the winter,... More

We walked through the woodland, loch-side paths to arrive at the reserve and had a wonderful hour there. There was a very interesting talk about the work of the centre and the life of the birds and the highlight was of course seeing the ospreys themselves. There are several telescopes set up to observe the nests as well as binoculars... More

This was my first visit to this RSPB conservation attraction. An idyllic setting by Loch Garten, the osprey visitor centre cum bird-hide is a remarkable place. I visited in early June and saw both the adult birds and chicks live on the monitors in the centre which also acts as a bird hide. It was a memorable visit.

A gentle walk through the forest to the hide was well worth the effort. Very knowledgeable staff and volunteers, Digiscopes and binoculars are provided but take a camera as not only can you see the birds but other residents of the area are encouraged to come within range.
