- Jane P46 contributionsInteresting place but no information!!Just popped up to see Castle. Did not know what to expect. The 'ticket' office isn't really clearly marked. It's only around a euro to walk round hence not much information Such a shame. Would be good to be given even a sheet of paper explaining a little bit about medieval life here. It's all a bit use your imagination to be honest. Would recommend a visit but don't expect too much historical information on the site. Google helped 😬Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023
- Fiona22 contributionsAmazing building and structures, a bit more historical information would be awesome!Great views from the castle ramparts. Interesting to see the castle in a relatively unimproved state as it gave a very authentic feel. Maybe a little more information could be provided, we saw signs indicating an audio tour but wasn’t offered at entrance. Cheap entrance fee so still worth the visit.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 January 2024
- rainbowdolphin90Edinburgh, United Kingdom773 contributionsCheap entrance fee worth it for the viewsA bit disappointing. The inside has a few of the daily life buildings restored, which is nice to see and different from the usual restoration of the grand buildings. There is very little information either in Portuguese or English and an explanation of the buildings and life within the castle would have been nice. The information on the knights of Christ inside the chapel was very interesting and informative, pity there wasn't more information in the rest of the castle. There is a medieval torture museum inside the castle, but I did not want to enter it. Fantastic views from the castle walls though.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 August 2024

Castle a few minutes drive from Vila Real de San Antonio. Entrance price of €1.10 per person.
The site is made up of almost completely emptied buildings, so no furnishings or artefacts from the period.
However, it is worth a visit which lasts about 45 minutes.

A beautiful place to visit. I was sad to see how much potential this place has but it’s not. I would give it 5 start but I was a bit disappointed that I could see the medieval torture exposition because the light were out in the room this was set up in. I raised it with the staff and they didn’t seem too bothered about it, I found they treated the matter with lack of professionalism. Also there was a room full of artefacts with only Portuguese texts and stories posted on the wall. An English version of it all wouldn’t hurt! I would have been interested.
The whole interiors yard was impressive as well, but I would have expected to see some descriptions here and there about what each building used to be, how it was this lies, what was the life like in the interior of the castle, how many people did it house, etc.
There are people who’d be interested in more and this place really has great potential.

This castle is not in good condition but is definitely interesting to visit. The torture chamber we have seen on The Last Kingdom. Clearly this moor Castle was used by the Crusaders to oust the moors over many years and it worked. It is on top of the hill and very uneven walking surface so be aware. Great views from the castle.

Visited the medieval castle in Castro Marin. Hard climbing over uneven cobblestones. Not suitable for those with mobility problems. Not much to see, but interesting considering its historical value. Small exhibition of excavations and the castle wall is partly walkable. Beautiful views in all directions. Symbolic entrance fee for section €1.20 p.p.

Not much there - nice walk round walls of Castle and very cheap to enter but not enough labels or exhibits. Needs a bit of tlc and perhaps re do earphone dialogue. Torture Area good explanations.

I visited Castro Marim out of season and had the place to myself, no staff, no entry fee and nowhere to leave a donation.
I spent three hours there, taking in the views and exploring every nook and cranny of the architecture.
I was disappointed with the amount of historical informational available on display but luckily I had my iPad with me and was able to Google everything I needed to know.
I was staying nearby in Monte Gordo and it took 15 minutes to drive there in a hire car.
I have made a note to revisit this castle with my grandchildren who will love it.
Regards comments in other reviews about the lack of Health & Safety, I think this highlights what a mollycoddled society we have become in he UK!
Whilst driving through the village I noticed an area where camper vans and mobile homes were parked up (See Photo).

My husband and I decided to stop in Castro Marim for a quick visit and I’m glad we did. The town of Castro Marim is quaint, picturesque, walkable and has several cafes to grab an espresso.
The castle is a must see! It dates back to 1000 BC and is full of rich history. You can walk the castle wall which gives you amazing views of Spain to the east and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal to the west. There’s a small gift shop with an attendant that can answer any history questions about the castle or Castro Marim itself. Don’t hesitate to visit this great town if traveling alone, as a couple or with a family.

Go and visit this small town when they are celebrating their medieval days. The castle and adjacent streets turn into one big festival. Everybody is out on the streets being happy and rackety and enjoying the best food and drinks!
