We booked our tickets directly in the STF Hostel in Abisko in the same day we were supposed to go up to the sky station. They recommend you to book one or two hours before because if it's too windy the lifts will not be operated for safety reasons. We booked at 18h and the lifts started at 19h30. A guide from the swedish turism department took us to the lower level station and there informed us about the security measures and necessary clothing is provided. It's a 30 minute chair lift ride with possible temperatures down to -20ºc in winter. The provided overall worked wonders and we didn't feel any cold. Up on the station we even layed down on the snow the enjoy the northern lights and the view over the Abisko National Park and we always felt warm. In the sky station a there is a restaurant/cafe, we did not eat anything but it's supposed to be really tasty. The chairlifts operate until 1am but you can leave whenever you want, the guides will help you on your way down and make sure you are safe at all times. The ride down was even more beautiful. Really recomend it, except if the weather is foggy because you won´t be able to see a thing. Thanks to our guide Moa who gave us interesting facts about the northern lights as soon as we arrived at the sky station.

A chairlift ride up the mountain taking between 25 and 35 minutes (depends on how many behind you, stops and starts at busy times). It is extreamley cold but as long as you have on your arctic gear it's fine. The skysation insist on you wearing arctic gear before allowing you to go up. If you dont have it they will provide it for you so no worries there.
Guides are on hand to give you a whole host of information on the northern lights and they are very good at spotting them before you do.
There is a small restaurant and bar where you can go and warm up whilst waiting for the lights to come out. There are a few toilets too (eco compost) Last ride up is midnight.
If the lights dont come out there is an interesting presentation given about them.
The lifts can be shut beacuse of wind so check before you go.
If you are lucky enough to go up on a clear night the views are amazing, stars are so bright and orion's belt can be seen very clearly.
Enjoy

I thought that you would be able to see the northern lights from the cozy inside, while drinking some hot lingo berry juice or so, but in reality we had to "go for a walk" before we could enter the sky station after a very cold lift ride. So when we finally were allowed in we were frozen to the bone and then the choice of beverages was also very limited. The view was nice though. You really feel closer to the northern lights and the view of Abisko from above was also nice.

We booked the Sky Station during our stay at STF Abisko and were excited to hit the top of the mountain for photos. Unfortunately, it was too cold for the lift to run, -28C. The good is instead of taking the lift to the top of the mountain we had a brief presentation at the hotel and a hike to some viewing areas. The bad is we had some people that were unprepared for the cold and the hike and we weren’t able to stay out long. The best is that our very excellent guide Manuel took everyone who wanted to go back to the hotel for snacks and warm drinks and once everyone was settled took a couple of us who wanted to go back out down the trail to the lakeshore. We were able to see a phenomenal light show and get some great photos. Thank you Manuel for an unforgettable evening in Abisko.

Chair lift cancelled because of weather which was fair enough. So meal served in BBQ shed behind the hotel. We paid for a 4 course dinner, got 3 courses. The starter was cured meats with crisps (yes crisps!). Main meal was mash potato with reindeer stew. It was cold and meat was tough (we had reindeer in other places and it was lovely but not here). Pudding was pannacotta which tasted like custard with chocolate sprinkles on top with some lingonberries. Drinks packages were strange and expensive. We wanted wine and there was only one choice which cost £50 a bottle (to be honest it wasn't great). Presentation was on a laptop that was hard to see and visuals were a bit childlike. We didn't bother with the guided walk so can't comment on that. Weather was so bad we went back to our hotel. Saw the aurora back at the hotel, so needn't have wasted our money. Beware no refunds if weather cancels the chairlift and alternative offered is very poor.

You need to snow suit up for the 30 min / 2 km open chair lift ride to the restaurant. Considering that everything comes in via chairlift and the size of the kitchen the food quality is amazing. Staff are so professional. A must do if you are in the area.

In my entire trip of adventure and anxiety, this was the most scary of all the excursions. Not because it was difficult but (a) it was in the night (b) you are being lifted up the mountain in an open chair and where you have no choice but wait till you reach. In a cold, windy, dark night the only thing you see is your partner and the chair in front of you.
Having said so, the 20 to 25 minutes ride is a beautiful experience, where you can hear the sound of the silence. Up at the station at team of young professional take good care of the guests and a sumptuous meal is prepared, generally they serve the Reindeer stew.
Being cloudy, we could not get to see the lights on that night.

This tour is very badly organised and a good way to waste $130. Starts at 9pm but involves a 30min walk in a group to the chair lift. Then you are forced to wear their overall sets, even if you went prepared with good quality winter clothing. Our group was about 40 people, so it took about 30 mins to get everyone into the badly fitting suits. Then everyone has to queue for the chair lift, which is a very old and cheap design, that has to stop for each pair of customers to sit.... so once on the way, the lift stopped and started over 20 times. It's similar on the way down.
Far better to take one of the small minivan tours into the forests....

Don’t let the chairlift put you off if you are scared of heights. It is a smooth ride, even if windy like it was when we came back down.
The view is out of this world and on a clear night it feels like you can touch the stars with your hands.
We booked the upgraded dinner experience so were able to explore earlier than others.
The guide literally lets you walk around the mountain top alone after dinner or you can go on a guided hike!

We had just spent the past 2 hours travelling to this attraction by taxi, train and coach. We get to the reception and hit by the sentence.”sorry the cable cart is now broken it should be fixed by the 28th February.” They either offered us a hike up the hill in pitch black or a refund. It had just costed us 4000 sek to visit here and they offered us our 3076 sek back not covering the cost it took us to get there. Not only had we just wasted a day of our holiday we had also wasted nearly 1000 sek. They told us they had only known about it for the past 2-3 hours but didn’t both sending us an email to let us know. If they did send an email we wouldn’t have set off for our journey and would have saved us 4000 sek. Absolutely disgusting service, I do not recommend coming here unless you want to be very disappointed.

Hello, the aurora sky station is open in decembrer? To go up to the montain? And the restaurant on the montain? Thanks

Hi the sky station is a building at the top of the mountain where you can view the northern lights. It has a small restaurant, toilets and a tall tower to climb(if you want to) to view the lights from.
It is accessed by chairlift which takes between 20 and 35 minutes to get to the top.
The staff there are very knowledgeable on the lights and will give you a whole host of information.
Great place to be if the light come out as no light pollution.

Hi, I am staying at Abisko Turiststation. Do we have to stay at the Skystation if we book a trip to Aurura Skystation / Chairlift or we can come back to the Abisko Turiststation? Do we have to book in advance or one can book at the turiststation after one arrives there?
Written 19 January 2019
We drove in from Kiruna just for the evening and were lucky enough to book a spot to the Sky Station. I don't believe you can actually stay at the sky station - it opens at 9pm and closes around 1am. You also do not have to stay at the Turiststation hotel to book. I would recommend booking in advance if you can (even by a day or two) just to make sure you don't miss out as it does book up quickly. Have so much fun!

Where do I book the chair lift tickets excluding the exclusive dinner? I tried looking around but see no avail. Only provides the exclusive dinner option which cost 1890 SEK....

We booked directly through the little hotel right across the street from the train station and ski lifts

Will the sky station be available during 1st week of January 2019? Is there any activities to do at Abisko STF as i understand there is no daylight and its 24hours night time

Go on their website and check out their calendar. It should show you the holiday opening times. Or do what we did and book a northern lights tour. There are two companies that run tours to suit your needs. Again go online to check them out. That way we didn't miss anything. By the way we were there late December 2017 and there was about 4 hours of sunlight between 10:00am and 2:00pm sunrise to sunset. Have fun, we did

Does anyone know if the chair lift will be working this winter?
Written 17 September 2018
Yes,it should be. We went in late December 2017 and it was operating then. People go up for skiing and to eat at the restaurant.
