About
The present church, the Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was constructed and furnished in the third quarter of the XVIII century. The building is one of the finest examples of late Baroque architecture in Lithuania. The interior, designed by the gifted Lithuanian artist, Thomas Podgaiskis, has been preserved without significant changes for over two centuries.

Town Siluva is very small and quit. But have two most beautiful God houses probably in all Lithuania! If you traveling by this town you definitely must stop here.

The icon is displayed in a beautiful church on the grounds of which manifested an apparition of the Blessed Virgin in 1608. The original church was razed to the ground after serving as a venerated Marian shrine from the 14th century and site of the annual Silines celebration to commemorate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. This icon is considered one of the three great miraculous icons of Eastern Europe.
The site includes the Basilica of Siluva, and across it in white, the Church of the Apparition that holds the miraculous icon. There are gardens outside and s statue of the Virgin where she appeared. Across the statue is the altar from which large masses for the faithful are held.
This is a very beautiful, very spiritual place and the effort if going there (admittedly its difficult) is worth it, I promise you.
Siluva is 40 miles south of Siauliai and 120 miles northwest of Vilnius. The route our guide made took us from Vilnius to Siluva, then to the monastery of Tytuvenu, and finally to the Hill of Crosses at Siauliai. Our trip took 11 hours with stops. This was pretty fast considering that we visited 3 sites; I think it helps that we took our own van.
I highly recommend this trip.

Šiluva shrine is one of the sites of the apparition of Virgin Mary in Europe though considerably less known due to long years of isolation of Lithuania and suppression of Catholic religion. Though the church in the area stood even before the apparition which happened at the beginning of 17th century, present basilica is from the late 18th century and the shrine itself was built only in the twenties of the 20th century, on the exact spot of the apparition. Thus, a small village Siluva is and has been for a long time one of the most or maybe most important religious site in Lithuania. This is the reason for incongruously huge square between the basilica and the shrine – during the important religious events crowds may be immense. The basilica itself is an interesting example of late baroque with well preserved interior. The shrine is an example of eclectism. Its interior is rather bare, as everything is centered around the altar which was built upon the apparition stone which is visible at one corner. Some stained glass is also quite interesting.

Siluva is probably the maij worship place of Lithuania. The importance of Siluva was proved by the Pope John Paul 2 when he visited it in 1993. The basilica itself looks very beautiful and it is full of small sculpturrs inside.
