Really one of the the nicest wines we have had by far! Made a special detour to come here as trying to learn more about the wines in NZ and the name kept coming up on the wine menu in the restaurants as we were touring around. We also came in here not liking any of the Pinot Noirs from NZ, when we told the lady doing the wine tastings she “made” us do the Pinot Noir wine tasting and converted us (like turning a vegetarian into a meat eater)!!!. We liked every single one we tried here along with the chinon Blancs, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, also lovely dessert wines that they do (or pyjama wine as the lady named it). Floated away happily, buying 3 bottles, envious of the other people from the north island who were buying more! We came away being a fan and knowing now that if we choose a Mt Difficulty wise with any of our meals whilst we are touring around here for the next 3 weeks, we will have made a good choice! Apparently we can buy their wine in Waitrose and Majestic wines in the UK so will definitely be doing that when we get home. The views were lovely, would have loved to have had a meal in their restaurant but did not have the time. Did not get the ladies name who gave us the wine tasting but can’t thank her enough for making this such a lovely and memorable experience, she was full of enthusiasm, extremly knowledgeable and great fun, many thanks.

We were part of a large group visiting the cellar door. Claire and John coped with us admirably and understood the nature of our visit. The wines we tasted were great; they really do produce some excellent wines. Our hosts gave a concise and comprehensive explanation of the wines we tried. The accompanying food went down very well and was perfect for this situation. The facility has some breathtaking views which really cap of an unforgettable experience.

Up a goat track (it’s ok I promise) you’ll find the car park and entrance to the tasting room and restaurant.
We were warmly greeted and offered two tasting options. We chose the Pinot Noir flight. To be honest, hadn’t heard of this winery which is sad as their wines are terrific.
The tasting room has both indoor and outdoor seating with outdoor having a spectacular view. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

We arrived on a wet Wednesday, with no booking, but we were squeezed in.
So that was a good start.
Our party of 4 had Sourdough bread w/butter. ($14.50) But it was 4 small slices of bread with a suitable amount of whipped butter. You can buy 2 loaves of sour dough for $14.00 at the market.
Then, we all ordered Salmon, ($48.00), to keep it simple, as we had been told, we needed to vacate our table before 2.00 pm for the next sitting. The salmon was beautifully cooked but came with a large bowl of insipid, cold potato salad, that was mixed with mint, peas, fennel, and lemon. Tasteless and did nothing to enhance the salmon.
We chose the Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2020. very flavoursome and lovely wine. $67.00. But at our local 4 Square supermarket, this wine was available for $55.29.
Our service person never engaged with us at the table and did not return to top up our wine glasses. She showed no humour and did not smile.
Overall, the experience was disappointing, and as we had guests from overseas we felt a little embarrassed that we subjected them to this venue.
Certainly overpriced and staff need to develop a more engaging manner.

Mt Difficulty lunch and tasting
Excellent food and wine
We enjoyed an excellent tasting with Nicki who guided us beautifully through the Mt Difficulty range. All wines were of excellent quality - the Ghost Town Chardonnay a particular find.
Lunch followed - a substantial charcuterie board with a serve of beautiful lamb rack to accompany - very enjoyable with a couple of wines. Lunch and wine very well priced. Oh, and the view over the surrounding vineyards and river are amazing.
Definitely visit.

An all round experience. We hadn’t booked but they accommodated us on the outside deck — open air and sun hats provided. The day was perfect, autumn had exploded in the vines and the valleys of Central Otago. He had Bluff Oysters followed by chargrilled lamb ribs and I had the baked salmon with potato salad washed down with a Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir. The wait staff were attentive and more importantly related well to the diners. For me the surroundings, experience and ambience are all part of the package aligned with fabulous food and this place had it all. Didn’t want it to end.

Mt Difficulty indifference
The Indifference shown by the staff was outstanding!
We’d decided to have the two options of wine tasting, the first staff member brushed us off when she realised we didn’t have a lunch booking and only wanted a tasting. The lovely young lady that gave the tasting gave the impression she knew nothing about wine and was working off a poorly written script.
Just as well the wine talks for its self.

My Difficulty produce a great range of Central Otago wine from Pinot Noir to Syrah. Reasonabley priced at $5 to taste 5 wines (rebated if you buy 2 or more bottles). Friendly and knowledgeable staff. We were visiting the Bannockburn Sluicings Historic Reserve just down the road, which is well worth a visit.

The white wines here are our favourite selection in the area. I have a sweet tooth, but even the Chenin Blanc was fruity enough that I didn't miss the sweet. I actually enjoyed it room temperature rather than straight out of the fridge. The lady behind the counter is very knowledgeable and easy to talk with. Enjoyed our experience and had a case and a half sent home. It arrived at our door 2 days after we got home so a perfect welcome home present.

We visited this winery in 2015 and were blown away by the amazing views and topography. I had raved to the couple we were taking with us about what an incredible experience they were going to have. The young lady looking after us unfortunately had very limited knowledge of the wines. As such, the whole experience was over in 15 minutes or so. It was a little deflating. I don't blame her personally - she was doing her best and wearing a training badge but she should not have been left to look after us by herself. There were no other customers there at the time so whoever was supervising should have been on hand. This is a premium vineyard which has received world-wide acclaim for its location, wines and restaurant so I feel they should ensure they have staff available who have a reasonably detailed knowledge of the wines and vintages.
