Fantastic few hrs of history with epic restoration underway

Amazing to walk around this 12th century monestary and get a real feel for how the community lived, worked and worshipped. Great for all ages. Make sure you read the free guide as you go around to give much richer context to your experience.

A human skull and solitary lifestyles!

This was such an inspiring view into the past! I've been telling every sommelier I know - go to Priorat for the wines (of course) but MAKE SURE you also visit the Cartoixa, the remains of the monastery around which Priorat was founded.

The Carthusian monks believed in solitude and silence and lived most of their lives alone in cells with a small courtyard garden where they could grow vegetables for themselves and the community. During the visit you get to walk through these living quarters and catch a glimpse into what their lives must have been - fascinating (but watch out for the human skull!)

I also tell everyone I know (sommeliers and even non wine lovers) to plan a visit to at least one winery in Escaladei. Me personal favorite is the Conreria, it's a little bit off-the-beaten path and they are famous for their incredíble white wines in this land of reds - worth a visit!

Stunning character...and free (sometimes)!

Visit for 30 minutes or three hours, there’s no excuse to come to Priorat and not visit this site. Best of all, you can easily wrap it into a visit to Celler de Scala Dei. Incredible experience with next to no effort.

Our guide took us here and gave us the history and showed us the ruins. Enjoyed. Then went for wine tasting at their winery. She was very interesting and enjoyed the wines!

Back in Time

If you are a history buff, Cartoixa is a must. Choice of location, the time period, the architecture and locale all make for an out of the way, but worthwhile excursion.

Superb location
Apr. 2018 • Couples
Definitely worth to visit because of the historic value and the superb location against the Priorat cliffs. The monastery has been heavily looted over the centuries but one can still get a good idea how it used to be, thanks to the restored parts, explanatory boards along the visitor path, information and documentary movie at the entrance building. Great to combine with cruising the area for wineries and scenery .

A wonderful insight into Spanish monastries.
May 2018 • Solo
My visit left me with a big smile on my face. To be able to compare the differences between a Spanish and a British Carthusian monastry and how each adapted to the environment they were in was fascinating. As was seeing how they developed after the 16th century when the british monastries had been desolved . A wonderful day.

Hidden gem in the middle of Priorat
May 2018 • Friends
This place is a hidden gem in the middle of Priorat, it is beautiful and extremely peaceful! My friends and I got there only a few minutes before closing so we decided not to go in (although very reasonably priced), but we drove up the road where you can still have a great sigh of the monastery and were able to spend some good 30-40 minutes just chilling and chatting while being stunned by the views! It is well worth the visit after you had the chance to explore the local wineries, just bear in mind the roads around this region are very curvy, but amazing sight!

Very nice ruins to visit with rooms set up representing original uses. Very reasonably priced. Only 3,50 Euros or 2,50 Euros for seniors or children.
