Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had this trip with my clients and my sister yesterday. And it was wonderful place to visit. I wasn't love rock structures as I do love a place with water and animals. But I loved this place differently. And my clients told me as they are happy to visit it. I recommend everyone to visit this church if you go to wukro. And many tourists come to visit danakil depression, I intend to recommend this place to have one more day to visit it.

This church is very accessible, with lovely views of the area and a vibrant Saturday market below. Our guide, Yalew Tafete of Guide Ethiopia Tours who was with us for the entire 3-week trip, answered every question and was able to tell us the stories behind the paintings of stories with which we were not familiar.

A lovely little church, and for many years the only rock-hewn church 'known' to the western world. Really vivid colours in the murals.

Coming from Addis, this might be the first rock hewn church you will visit. It might not be the finest, but still has the air of continuous spriritual devotion over centuries. Look out for the church bells, made from shell cases, and try to visit the local cemetery at the bottom, for an insight into Ethiopian customs.

It was nice to see what the ancient people were thinking and the historic tour was very informative. We had a good guide and was very professional.

Easy access to this interesting church. It's built of sandstone and its most striking feature is the decorated 15th Century pillar depicting pictures of saints and angels. It also has a high ceiling with line drawings which still shows some blackening caused by a large fire back in the 10th century.

I visited this rock hewn church that is said to be the oldest rock hewn church in Ethiopia and it is situated in Tigrai. It is about a 5 hour drive from Axum. The church was very interesting both outside and inside. I visited the church a few days before the Ethiopian Easter on May 1 2016. The church must be visited to see what it is really like. The church is decorated with a number of murals on the walls.

Easy access from Wukro, and a good example of the rock-hewn type of churches of the region. A gentle walk from the parking place and a pleasant location. The usual ticket to be paid, and offering to the priest will be of direct help. If you cannot manage the more isolated churches, this is a fair sample.

We would have been more impressed if this had been the first. Very easy to access compared with others, though.

This is one of the better rock-hewn churches north of Mekele, but not as good as Lalibela. There are priests around, good quality religious paintings inside, and a market at the foot of the hill with some good photo opportunities.
