It was a great visit/walk through the beauty of history, religion, and knowledge. We visit the Archabbey on our way to Budapest from Vienna. It was rainy day, so no one there but us and a couple. It was just perfect that way. The ground, church, cloisters are not overly fancy looking, but amazingly beautiful and tranquil. It is perfect as an abbey should be. The library is impressive, gorgeously built and deco.

Spent a few hours in and around the Archabbey. After parking we took an elevator, the ladies at the desk greeted us very friendly - the toilets here were clean and modern, as the whole entrance area - and walked over the ‘green bridge’ to the abbey. We took another elevator and enjoyed the spectacular view over the whole region and the façade of the abbey with it’s beautiful historical mosaic. I could had spent hours there contemplating the history and actuality of this place.
Inside the abbey church there’s many things to see, from the crypt to the high altar, the art and even the modern choir stalls were nicely made, which I can’t often say of modern ecclesiastical furniture. The library is stunning !
The audio guide was easy to follow and provided more informations if requested.
Our visit was completed with an invitation from the Archabbot emeritus to have lunch with the monks in the refectory and coffee in his private cell, a great surprise !
The Fathers were all very kind, I was sat next to an older monk who excused himself for not speaking any other language than Hungarian but made sure I felt at home and I had everything I needed - as everywhere in the Benedictine world.
I would certainly recommend coming here!

I visited the Pannonhalma Abbey on a Sunday, leaving from Győr in the morning on the 8:00 am bus and arriving around 8:50 am (see below for more bus information). I attended the mass at 10am that lasted an hour. Then I completed an audio guided tour, had a delicious lunch at the onsite restaurant, quickly visited the lavender distillery, and enjoyed a winery tour and tasting. Just a note, tours aren't allowed in the chapel before and during mass, so if you want to see it and are there on a Sunday, make sure you time your visit for after the mass. The Abbey and its surrounds are beautiful. Everything is well organized, and people were helpful whenever I had questions. It's worth spending the day and exploring all that the Abbey has to offer.
I couldn't find the official bus schedule anywhere before my visit, although I continually read about a bus that leaves Győr and goes straight to the Abbey (instead of dropping you in the town of Pannonhalma and making you walk uphill for a couple of kilometers). The only place I could find any bus information online was the Abbey's website. Attached is a picture of the schedule I took at the bus depot (at Stand #11). See the "Pannonhalma, vár főkapu" schedule. The first column is during the week (Monday-Friday), the second is for Saturday, and the third is Sunday. The bus also picks you up at the Abbey and returns to Győr. Very convenient and only 465 HUF each way.

When you arrive at the top of the hill, you have the feeling you are in another world. The time is getting slower the nice of the surrounding environmental is canceled you are in the spiritual world of the Benedictines. The building are renovated and equipped with brand new electronic travel guide system. There is a very nice restaurant near the abbey called "Viator" with very delicious food. There is a lovely winery located in the hill with nice local wine species. The new patisserie downstairs in the village is just phenomenal. You can eat the world's best napoleon here.

So sad to read some of the reviews with low grades of recommendation..., but Pope John Paul II found it worthwhile to visit this place in 1996 on its 1,000 year celebration.
But then, I have some special ties to this place.
True, this is not the Notre Dame, but it predates it by 350 years. For the story of Pannonhalma, please look it up in Wikipedia and follow its spiritual journey through today.
Most of Hungary's original letters from Kings' and nobles' are here, unfortunately not for view for the public.
Pannonhalma is the second larger sovereign abbey in the world after Monte Cassino.
You see, during communist times, in 1963 I spent 4 years studying here. All of our teachers were Benedictine monks and they spent their lives to teach and pray (Ora et labora) like so many of their predecessors, since 996.
I admit that I have a special bond. I escaped from Hungary in 1970 and ever since I lived in the US.
Yes, I have to agree that the winery tour is not Opus One in Napa Valley and is not producing wines like Château Mouton-Rothschild, but then again the Abbey got back only a little of its land just recently after the communist regime declared free elections in 1989.
The Abbey's library has close to a half million books and we were researching here before Google, or the PC existed. The oldest Hungarian language document is protected here dating back to 1055.
Its arboretum is famous all over Europe, and an hour walk under the many different trees in the summer or so many different berries in the fall could just give you a more memorable visit.
I still visit this place every year in the summer during our family's visit to Europe and my boys' dream is to study here when they reach 18.
When you visit, feel the history that surrounds you, otherwise this place is just a bunch of bricks put together. If you call ahead you can inquire about any special tours that maybe available.

If you have the luxury of time, Pannonhalma Abbey is worth the trip. We visited it on our way from Budapest to Vienna. The views from the Abbey were great! The Church felt reverent, beautiful and quaint but the library was something else. I would say that, in my opinion, the library from the movie "Beauty and the Beast" could have been based on this library. It was in a word, Awesome!

We spent a few hours up here, with very few other tourists. Lovely place, lots of time to see everything, including a couple of close-by outlying chapels and such. A colorful bonus: a bicycle race ended in the parking lot, which, like the Archabbey itself, is on top of a steep hill. Panoramic views from the top. A delight.

If travelling from Vienna to Budapest it is worth detouring to see this abbey. It is on a very prominent hill with steep sides. We were there for the late afternoon light which made the imposing Abbey even better.

We stopped at the abbey on our way to Györ. They have free parking for visitors which was nice since we arrived by car. The abbey, they say, is one of the largest in the world. However, only a limited number of the rooms is actually open to the public so it took us about half an hour to see it all. You can enjoy some more walking around the property, it's quite large. I found the view from the abbey to be the best thing there. It was not very crowded with tourists on a Saturday and the ticket price is not too high.

The Abbey is beautiful overall and sits atop a hill overlooking a valley. If you stop here make sure to visit the library as it has one of the nicest I have ever seen.
