About
This was about a 3 hour ride from Sapa to the Cao Son Market. The last 1 1/2 hr was on a very bumpy road.Cao Son Market was a small local market but still interesting to watch all the local people barter in their colorful attire. Scenery was somewhat cloudy the day we went. Imagine on a clear sunny day, it would be more lovely.

It takes about 2 hours from Lao Cai to get to this marked. You drive through scenic hill landscape with rice, tea, pineapple, corn and carrots.
It runs on Wednesdays and are visited by the hill tribes of Dzay, Blue H'mong and Flower H'mong. It is a place for the mountain people to meet and to shop. It is not a place for tourist shopping. When we visited the marked I think we were the only tourists there.
I haven't been on the other markets in this region but this one was definitely not spoiled by tourists.
I loved the marked, very good photo opportunities.

When in North Vietnam, visiting a farmers markets is a must. It is a great way to experience the daily lives of the local hill tribes. The sounds, the smell, the colors, the faces… this sticks to your memory. I visited the market in Can Cao (!). You can read all about my experience including many photos in my article: flitterfever .com/vietnam-can-cao-market-sapa

This is a must see even if only for strolling through to watch the hustle bustle of it. Everything is on sale from kitchenware, hardware, clothing, fruits, vegetable, livestock, etc. The most beautiful of all is to see the Hmong people dressed in their colourful traditional garb. Photo heaven.

If you are passing by, it would be a shame to miss it. However, if you can afford to choose, relatively close Bac Ha market is livelier and has more variety on offer (both etnically and goods for sale).

It was a long drive in on winding mountain roads but the spectacle of the market was a rewarding end. Here locals mix with only a handful of tourists, despite a number of stalls being clearly set-up to satisfy foreign tastes. There is a brisk local trade in water buffalo and other assorted animals, and the lunch tables proved to be popular after a hard morning's trade. Here you will find endless stores peddling the customary village 'costumes', kitchenware, children's goods, curved knives for cutting rice, rice doughnuts, grains, meat, fresh vegetables, fabrics to name but a few. I figure that if the locals shop here, then it is a good place to be.
