Located on Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong province, Viet Nam, the park covers an area of 263 square kilometers and hosts a rich biodiversity of plants and animals. You can explore the park by hiking, biking, kayaking or taking a boat tour. Along the way, you will see stunning landscapes of forests, mountains, caves and beaches. You will also encounter some of the rarest species in the world, such as the Cat Ba langur, the golden-headed langur and the white-headed langur. The park is also home to many other mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Cat Ba National Park is a must-see for anyone who loves nature and adventure.

We did the 14k hike to Viet hai and it made for one of my favourite days of our trip. So much nature to see, and look out for the dried up ancient lake on your left hand side early on. Some lovely views towards the end.
There’s a fair bit of up and down, and the ground is very uneven at times, so be prepared for that. One bit of advice: you’ll need to book a boat in advance to take you back to Cat Ba, or once you get to Viet Hai village. We didn’t realise and luckily a group of various hikers of us spoke to the owner of the village cafe at Viet Hai village, just past the park gates on the other side, and she called a boat for us. We chose the slow boat for 600k, so we could enjoy the views, which takes an hour or so. We paid an extra few k so that we could stop and go for a swim on a secluded beach. There’s also a faster boat for 800-1M ish. Recommend this whole day so much, it was big smiles from start to finish.

Rented motorbike from accommodations. First visited Trung Tram Cave. Then drove 2km to Ngu Lam. I purchased a ticket at Trung Tram for both (80KVND). But, you can purchase tickets separately, at each place, as well (40KVND each). Parking @ Ngu Lam is 10KVND: pay the attendant.
The trek to the peak is strenuous in parts, with lots of stairs and stone steps which can be a little slippery. No flip flops please!
The forest landscapes are quite scenic. And there are a couple of lookout points.

Small but lovely national park includes well maintained hike paths leading to hills with wonderful views and several caves. Entrance fee is cheap.

Catba National Park is a paradise for nature lovers. The hiking trails offer breathtaking views, the caves are magnificent, and the park is home to rare and endangered species. It's a must-visit for an unforgettable experience in Vietnam.

What a disappointment. The whole place should be closed to the public until it’s had some investment and is fit for people to visit again. It is run down, dirty , shabby and totally neglected. Some parts are strewn with rubbish and rubble. To have to pay money to get in is an insult. It’s stated that the entrance fee goes towards upkeep, improvements and maintenance. There is clearly none of that happening here. We’ve been travelling through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam since January and this is by far the worst “attraction “ that we have visited. The toilet facilities are filthy and smell is nauseating.
To be honest though , my whole impression of Cat Ba island is pretty much the same as with this place. Thank goodness I’ve only spent 3 days here. Never again.

This hiking trails are very good. This gives you a perfect nature feeling. Steep climbing up/down ways will test you physically and mentally. If you go with friends or couples it's gives you opportunity to help and guide each other.

If you are staying on Cat Ba Island for a couple of days this is definitely worth a visit to get an impression of the forest on the steep rocks. We took a taxi to the park. We chose the path to climb Ngu Lam peak - which is what most people do. The path is excellent, all done with rocks and concrete. There were no leeches. However, it is going up quite a bit, involving many stairs. I would not recommend sandals, but huge hiking boots are not necessary. There is a small building on top from which you have a phantastic 360 degree view. The path goes a little bit further from there to another peak where you also have a nice view. Then it goes back down more or less the same way. Just follow the arrows, no map needed. We didn't see many animals, certainly not the famous monkeys. The forest is too dense and the birds to shy. The few birds we saw were at the bottom near the houses - the ones that used to people. The park entrance ticket is also valid for a cave 1 km down the road. Tell your taxi (if it is also taking you back) in advance that you will also see the cave. Ours tried to get more money for that. The cave has some nice spots in it and is worth a visit. It won't take long at all. The entire trip tooks us about 4.5 hours.

The view from the top is amazing.
Getting to the top ... phew.
As a background on me, I'm not an overly fit person so if you are, and planning to do this hike then go for it. However.. I struggled, the first leg of the hike was the hardest, due to fending off the mosquito's rather unsuccessfully. Once you get higher it gets cooler but you are already three layers deep from your own sweat that doesn't evaporate because it's a jungle.
Basically I'm saying, it's not leisurely walk, it's hard work and honestly if I had heeded warnings about gyming before coming to vietnam i may have a differnt opinion. The view is spectacular at the peak and worth it but honestly as a representative of the less athletic types, I was just sat there with my inhaler, smiling briefly at the view and looking down at my impending return trek.
Don't be like me.
Be fitter 😂
