Easy to visit even without a 4x4

Some things to know
1) From where the road stops its about an hours walk to west point if you dont want to drive on the dirt road.

2) I did the dirt road in a 2WD SUV, but it did require alot of pothole avoidance. But beware 3 days after raining the road was still flooded in places, prob a better idea to park up and walk the rest of the way if its raining or you are not comfortable driving on a dirt road with alot of pot holes, some very deep.

3) They are currently repairing the road so in a few months it should be in alot better condition than it is now.

4) Its just a beach, a nice one but there are no hiking trails or lookout points that I could find.

5) You need good visibility on the roads so while its beautiful for sunset you may struggle to see some of the huge holes in the road if its after sunset.

Sunset spot
Dec. 2020
Great location to watch the sunset over the mountains back on the mainland. The beach is huge and deserted. It’s a dirt road for 20 minutes to access and even in our hire 4x4 was a pretty bumpy road.

You need a 4wd to get here but its a beautiful spot. So serene. Nothing there but a very quiet beach. They used to walk the cattle accross on low tide from here so its the closest spot to townsville

Worth a drive
Sep. 2020 • Family
We found the road to West Point to be not too bad. There are great views across the water and plenty of space for activities. One of the friendly locals showed our children where to find one of the local koalas that live in the yards of people’s houses. We were excited to see them up close.

Beautiful, quiet beach, but a bumpy road to get there.

We drove out to West Point on our last morning, and I'm glad we did. It's beautiful and so quiet and secluded! We had a 4 wheel drive, and I'm glad because the road is bumpy and pot-holed, but not too difficult. But if you have a sedan or low car you may be in trouble.

There is a sandy carpark at the end, and we had to help push a mini-moke out when it got bogged, so watch out for those soft spots!

the beach itself is gorgeous, and would be a great place for a picnic. No facilities, shops, etc, so bring a roll of toilet paper and anything else you might need with you!

often not visted west coast of Magnetic, worth a look.

Sandy beaches butting mangroves, so no swimming over here, however the drive in is diversified from a fauna and flora perspective and worth it in it's own right. road is actually pretty good, however hire companies will only let you take a 4 wheel drive on it, you could do it in anything. the views back to the mainland are very good and sunsets are a marvel, particularly with the smoke haze we had. well worth the trip. at sunset take repellent.

good drive
Jul. 2019 • Couples
Drove out to West Point Magnetic Island from Picnic bay.
Does have several kilometres of bitumen before the dirt road starts.
The dirt road is fine at the moment, does have a few very sharp dips which are signposted. Also a few pot holes, but you drive to the conditions and you will be fine.
I wouldn't drive the road if its been raining,as it would be slippery and water running through the low areas.
About 12 homes out there with a nice view towards Townsville.

This is a great place to watch the sun set on Australia 's east coast. The road is VERY rough, so don't take a hire car unless it is a 4wd and you are experienced.
