About
Among the most famous of the castles in the Aosta Valley, Fenis strikes visitors with its triumph of towers and crenellated walls. The castle sits on flat ground, which is unusual; Aimone de Challant improved it by building an impressive defensive system, which also features double curtain walls. However, more than being a fortress, the Fenis castle was a prestigious and refined residence: the courtyard and the rooms inside are rich in frescoes - the result of a decorating campaign started by Aimone’s son, Bonifacio in all likelihood. Not to miss is the famous St. George slaying the dragon by Jacquerio and his school, on the stone semicircular courtyard staircase. Many of the furnishings present, which are not original to the castle, were purchased by Alfredo d’Andrade, then Superintendent of Fine Arts, who supervised the restoration work at the end of the nineteenth century thus restoring the castle to its former glory.

This beautiful castle can only be visited with a guided tour. The tour is in Italian only. In about 30 minutes, you are quickly whisked through the castle. Beautiful rooms with frescos and in the rooms explanations are given on signs in Italian, French and English.

While in the Aosta area, we visited this beautiful castle. The tour however was only in Italian but we went along anyway. It has been beautiful restored with amazing frescoes in the chapel. There are English note/guides in all the rooms, so you can understand what the rooms were used for. Lovely fresco of St George slaying the dragon. Enjoyed the visit.

This bijoux castle was mainly used as a plush residence rather than for defensive purposes. After decades of neglect it was heavily restored by a private individual and eventually transferred to local government. To view you need to take a guided tour in Italian. It is well worth the visit as the castle has some very impressive frescoes within the courtyard and along the balconies.

Stunning visit to Fenis Castle. We were lucky to have a guide who spoke enough English and French fir us to understand. She was terrific and really did a great job. (Tours are normally in Italian. ) The Castle is well worth a visit!

Guide was in Italian only however we found out at the end he spoke English. There was some information written in English and other languages but not enough so we got very little from the tour. The tour only covers a small part of the castle. Could be far better.

A beautiful castle, unfortunately raining on the day of our visit, limited our appreciation. That said it is a small castle beautifully decorated with lots of period furniture and in very good condition. We had a male guide who was also very good.

Serious problem finding car parking. The castle looks amazing from the outside. Unfortunately the inside is filled with old replica chairs and chests. The tour guide was only in italian. The rooms only had information in Italian or French. Found the whole experience disapointing.

This castle is surely very nice outside and inside, maybe even the best castle in the enchanting Aosta Valley. It is a very great historical addition to the visit of the Ancient Roman city of Aosta, this time to feel the Medieval classic times. The castle is like a strong fortress with many towers outside and you can see some nice frescoes and wall-paintings inside. However, I think that this castle is not the best organized because you can visit the interior only as a part of a guiding tour (I had to wait 45 minutes for it) and this tour is (maybe with the exception from larger announced groups) only in the Italian language, therefore people who don't speak Italian can't understand the guide and can only read inscriptions beside. So this attraction is surely very nice and inspiring but there can be some improvements in the future if owners take an interest here.

we were visiting Italy with a group of 50. we wanted to visit Fenis castle. They said no need of reservation for groups, just a phone call a day before. we called them, they hardly speak foreign languages, except italian and a very basic french. finaly we understood that we will be split into 2 groups of 25 each and the admission charge for groups is 3,5o euros/person. visits start at 9:00.
When we arrived next day, it was a heavy rain. we parked the bus, climbed to the castle and entered. the first reaction of the man at the office window was to shout to us "get out".... when we asked why, he said we are not allowed to stay and wait inside, only outside. insude there was a covered part we wanted to wait there. he continued to shout to us that we hace to go outside. he said that half of the group will go in in 10 minutes, the other 25 will wait half an hour outside in the rain. when we asked if we can wait under the cover he said no !!! so some of us left. in the meentime he allowed 3 persons to buy their ticket and wait so we were alowed only to be 23 so he did not want to charge group ticket because we were not 25 anymore !!! finaly he agreed the group charge. all this discussions were held with difficulty as they did not speak english or german as our guide asked previously. the guide spoke only italian, we tried to understand and our guid tried to translate. Inside was nothing spectacular (from outside it is nice), a lot of empty rooms, some old furniture, some wepons. no photos are alowed.
so i do not suggest the visit of this attraction. they are very unpolite, not professionals at all !!!!

There are lots of castles and towers in Valle d'Aosta but this is a first rate medieval castle. The tours are in Italian but sometimes the guides speak French or a little English. Well worth the tour to get a feel for what life might have been like centuries ago for the feudal lords and their families. The place has been well restored since it was last inhabited. Apparently local farmers used the place for their cattle and fodder up until a few decades ago. There are original paintings both in the chapel and the main foyer. I always bring visitors to Fenis when they come to visit Aosta for the first time.

Posso visitare il castello solo all’esterno?
Cordiali saluti
A presto
