- jj407Phoenix, Arizona57 contributionsWonderful day trip from Munich! One of the highlights of our trip to Munich! We took the train to Herrsching (very easy) and used AllTrails to follow the route up to the monastery. The path through the woods was beautiful and not too crowded. A little bit of incline but not too bad. At the top, we explored some of the buildings and then went to the beer garden area. The food and beer were delicious, and the atmosphere was wonderful with traditional live music. After we finished lunch we walked back down past the train station to the lake and had dessert. It’s a perfect day trip from Munich, and honestly we enjoyed the beer garden there more than Oktoberfest.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023

It's a wonderful day trip out to Herrsching on the S-Bahn and then the walk or bus to the monastery (or to Tutzing and then the bus). It's very pleasant indeed sitting out on the terrace with a view over the countryside, drinking my favourite Weissbier.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 November 2023
- JemmaBMelbourne, Australia381 contributionsA lovely stop for a couple of hoursA lovely stop during our trip from Hohenschwangau to Munich. It was easy to park in the large carpark at the bottom of the hill and there were free bathrooms too. The abby is beautiful & peaceful. We paid 1 euro each to climb the tower and could see the view of the surrounding area from small windows. We had apple Strudel at the Cafe afterwards.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 June 2024

The walk to get to Andechs is beautiful and scenic, but not too strenuous a walk. You do have to be able to climb stairs to get there. From the nearest train station the walk up to the monastery will require about an hour, then plan for an hour or two if you plan to eat there.
The interior of the church is wonderful, with rooms that you can look into through windows to see many beautiful, huge old candles. The church is beautiful. There is a lovely view from the various areas of the monastery.
The food was good, and the beer is good too. The downside is the grumpy staff selling and dishing out the beer and food at the self-serve part of the establishment. A simple smile and a cheerful word or two would make a huge difference to the overall experience.

The place is certainly pretty, they have souvenir stores and around three Biergartens. We tried to eat there but it was impossible, too many people, that was ok, the biergarten was not a traditional one, it is more an inside dining area. They have live music which is a plus for me. To go there there are buses every 30 minutes.

We hiked through the forest from a nearby town (around 2 miles) and arrived at this peaceful pastoral venue. Andechs sits atop a hill with beautiful views. The beer and food was outstanding with some vegetarian options as well as other libations besides beer. The church itself is gorgeous and serene. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.

Sitting outside, there's a bucolic view of farmland for as far as the eye can see with cows grazing below. My first haxe, pork neck, was delicious! The beer was some of the best I had in Germany. And the monastery was really beautiful. Too bad the loud Americans from Texas annoyed us and contributed the the ugly American stereotype.

We went twice (taking the hike from Herrsching " up the Holy Mountain". The RESTAURANT at the end is a great reward. Friendly service, properly prepared and delicious food at good prices ans AWESOME beer AND WINE. One of our favorite places when we stay in Munich (which we do for several weeks each year).

My friend took me to Andechs by walking through the lovely trail with the view of Ammersee along the way. Absolutely love the Schweinhaxel and the dark beer for lunch. A must visit place in Bavaria.

It is a 45 min trip by S bahn No 5 to Herrscing ( the end of the line ) and then directly outside the railway station a bus awaits you to take you on the 10 minute journey to the monastery.
Although this is a religious site, most people come here for the alcohol. I never saw a monk but you can visit the church.
I was surprised by how many people were there , especially quite a few elderly couples.
There is a large restaurant / beirkeller. You pay at a counter for the type of beer and then hand your receipt to the men at the beer counter directly next to you. You will then enter the world of heavenly tasting beer.
There are many types from the usual helles , dark beer and weissebier. However we had the appelweissebier , a truly gorgeous tasting apple beer , nothing like cider.
There is a large beergarden and views ovelooking the hillside.
Furhter down towards the exit / entrance there is a wee beer garden which is quieter and more peaceful
The food also looked quite tasty with not only the usal pig roasts but also cheeses and hams
For the beerophile or for someone wishing to get away for the day, I highly recommend a visit to this monastery. It is not a rowdy place but somewhere you can relax with a good beer and friends
Whilst there also visit the town of Herrsching .There is a lovely small beer garden right on the lake. I think it is a Pauliner restaurant / hotel. The food here is also hearty and tasty.
Sit back and soak in the lake and the beautiful mountains in the background
A very enjoyable day out !

With a bad hip, once off the train , is there transportation to Monastery. Could not walk up.
Written 24 September 2019
Yes, there is a bus to the street below the monetary. There is a short walk up hill, from the bus stop to the church.

Muchas gracias!
Written 28 June 2018
Sorry, oh can't really say how long the way through the forest is. I parked in front and climbed the stairs to the restaurant. That took around 5 minutes.

Hi TripAdvisor buddies. Does the bus from the station run on Sundays? If so from when to when? We will be there on August 27th.
Written 13 August 2017
If you go onto the MVV website all you need do is search for MVV-Regionalbus 951 Herrsching timetable and you'll see when busses run from Herrsching to Andechs (Kloster).

Please could someone tell me if well behaved dogs allowed at the brewery and on the local bus to get there?
Written 27 July 2017
You should be able to take your dog; I've seen them outside in the beer garden (and bowls for them to drink water from too).
Not sure about the bus - you might have to walk from the train station but that's not difficult and very pleasant.
