Did this tour last night. The glow worms were so incredible, our guide was super knowledgeable on the flora and fauna in the area. My partner is an animal lover and the guide answered all his questions. He was very respectful of the environment which was good to see because these animals are not a circus act they are wild animals. Would do it again and highly recommend.

This tour is good to do if you're in the area. Easily accessible from Katoomba. Not sure it would be worth driving from Sydney for. Lots of glow worms, which are a special thing to see. The guide is very passionate about them and loves showing them off. The tour is short on information, so don't go expecting to learn a lot, but you'll see a lot of them!

The meet-up location is next to the forest. It is extremely dark (our tour started at 7pm and it was end of May) and a bit scary at first, but we saw a couple of other cars parked around the area and people with their phone lights on inside so we just waited in the car till the guide arrived. You should see a small sign by the road saying 'Glow Worm Tours'. This time of year is quite chilly so dress warm. Tour guide arrived and provided head torches. There were about 8 people on the tour. Short walk into the forest and down the canyon, where you will start to see little glow worm lights all around - was quite magical, like little stars against the pitch black (guide will make sure there is time where all torches are switched off so you can see the glow worms). Highlight was being able to stand very close (within 30 cm) of the canyon rock wall and see the twinkling dots up close. Would recommend (and book in advance)!

The tour itself is fascinating. The fact that you are going to a glow worms tour, and you see glow worms, makes perfect sense.
But with the amount of money being charged, we expected a bit more than just 10 mins of bush walking in the dark and a small amount (a few hundreds, maybe?) of glow worms. Maybe we had a wrong expectation of seeing internet pictures of New Zealand glow worms caves that have thousands and thousands of glow worms surrounding you.
You can have the same experience by read up Wikipedia about flow womrs, then just switching off the lights at your house, and stare at your appliances little led light. That’s it.
Don’t think I’d ever go again, not with this price.

Wanted to give a big shout out to Jochen for running a well organised tour, even if it was a little bit wet and cold with non-stop rain pelting down in that dark canyon, getting a chance to see all those glow worms shine like that was pretty incredible :)
The commentary was spot on too - not over the top and enough to be keep the program moving along.
Plussss... a super big thank you for all the bonus extras you threw in :)) like spotting me a lift from the gardens to the tour point so that a pavement pounder like me doesn't have to miss out on seeing the glow worms, and making sure I didn't turn into a popsicle by keeping the fireplace going, and of course letting me sponge off your excellent Wifi!
Must also give props here to the 'love(ly) Lionel' too ahaha. Catching a bit of the behind-the-scenes-action of your operation in that 'office' did get amusing at times.
Thanks again, I really enjoyed myself. For anyone who feels like being wowed by the closest thing to seeing stars right here on earth, definitely give this tour a go! It's not far from the picturesque Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens either!

We booked the tour knowing nothing about glow worms, has that ever changed! Even though there was only the two of us the guide was very enthusiastic. He took us down into the cavern to a world we never anticipated to see. He was extremely knowledgeable and explained the life cycle of the glow worm as they glowed in abundance on the cavern walls around us! We would definately recommend this tour to anyone that wants a new and unique experience

After booking a tour for 4th February, we were looking forward to this experience especially given all the fantastic reviews. We booked separate transport as per the website guidelines, via TCP Day Tours which was great. However, once we arrived, our guide was late and seemed irritable, probably as there were only the two of us booked on for that evening. We were told that Jochen was unavailable and Aaron led us silently, showing none of the passion or enthusiasm that Jochen gets praised for. There was NO recounting stories, NO teaching/fact sessions, NO knowledge (after asking, he even got the fly lifespan wrong!, NO supervised photo assistance and we even had to ask about getting a view of the glow worms. This 30 minute tour was rather a waste of an evening and over $200 down – it should have been much better.

Not only were the glow worms amazing, being out in the bush at night again just added to the experience.
After a shortish walk, we all sat in a decent size cavern in pitch dark totally surrounded by the worms, a tree canopy overhead. It was wonderful to experience them like that, just sitting taking it in as your eyes adjusted and more became visible. In turns we were taken up onto a platform that allowed us to get extremely close to the worms and their webs. To see them up so close and realise just how tiny they really were was totally unexpected.
The added bonus of the night were the stars as we walked out from under the tree canopy, our eyes now adjusted to the night sky.
Jochen went out of his way to give us background information about the worms and their lifecycle as well as to answer questions. Well worth the trip, highly recommended for tourists and locals as you simply don't get to see glow worms like that elsewhere.

I booked this tour for my girlfriend for her birthday and it was a wonderful. The guide was really knowledgeable about these beautiful little creeps.
I was advised the walk was easy and though it’s short I’d probably give it a medium difficulty rating, especially if you’re unfit or have knee difficulties.
The photos don’t even come close to depicting the magic.

We are 3 couples arriving in Sydney on November 6th and departing on November 9th. What suggestions do you have for transportation to/from Sydney? Thank you.
Written 12 June 2019
Getting to Katoomba from Sydney is an easy 2 hour journey by train. As you are only in Sydney for a short time, you could manage this in a day, albeit a very long day. Once in Katoomba, you could go on the hop on-hop off bus, getting off when/where the drivers suggest and getting back on the following bus, it will give an excellent snapshot of the Blue Mountains. My experience of the Glow Worm tour was very poor, but aside from my review, it would not seem sensible given the duration of your stay.

What is the difficulty rating of the walking track?
Written 26 March 2018
I am 50 and carry too much weight but did not find it difficult, even though it was wet and slippery when I went - which added an extra layer of difficulty. You must be able to climb steps and rocks to get into/out of the canyon plus some dirt/gravel tracks but anyone of standard fitness can take this trip.

Easy to medium difficulty. Approx 700m return walk, including a short hill on the way out. Some large steps in the canyon but overall a walk that is suitable for most people.
Please contact us if you have an injury or mobility issue that might affect participation. Tour is appropriate for children aged 9 years and older.
Thanks

We're staying in Katoomba and wanted to drive there and back, how is the road at those hours? is it safer to just drive back to sydney from there? Thank you!

is transportation to the location provided for this tour?
Written 19 August 2017
Nope, we drove ourselves and guide met us and we went on foot to the worms.

My husband is claustrophobic and can't do caves in order to see glow worms. But this is in a canyon and not in a cave, right? Thanks for any clarification.
Written 5 January 2017
Hi Alexandra
Yes that is correct - our tours are in a canyon NOT a cave. There are no confined spaces.
Regards,
Jochen
