Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Superb little museum in the old factory for processing products from sperm whale hunting. Numerous explanations and images from a bygone era help us discover a profession that has disappeared. Unlike other cetacean hunters, here everything was done by oar and harpoon thrown very close to the animals. A must see

Sao Roque do Pico was in the times one of the top place for artisanal Sperm Whale industry... meanwhile respectful of nature and never killing for nothing, contrary to what associations discurses... if you come around do pay a visit as it really worth it!

This place gives you a perspective on an old and dangerous profession of a whale hunter. But there is even more about the related industry... The main impression is sadness: so many animals were killed, and the methods were so disgusting. But this is our history, so I recommend. The museum is small, so don't expect something very outstanding and fascinating.

Museum looks unimpressive from the outside. You might even just walk on by. This is a must see museum. The movie on whaling is fantastic as are the displays. Don't miss it!

We stopped by because we wanted to know more about life on Pico. To be clear, this region has a strong history of whaling. If you don't like that, then skip it... I don't either, but seek to understand.
My daughter and I learned lots about how people on the island interacted with whales. The historic footage helped us understand that people had many jobs (farmer, etc) but when the whales were spotted, everyone would jump into action. All the whale was used, the oil and the "farinhas" which i think is the fertilizer, which must have been helpful with the volcanic soil.
It is a newer museum, has a gift shop, and informative.

We had a pleasure of visiting the Whaler's Museum in Lajes before arriving here, and hesitated whether it makes sense to see both... trust me they are completely different experience despite having the same subject in mind - here it's a previous whaling factory business turned into a modern day museum, as opposed to Lajes one more dictated to the profession itself - both great and absolutely worth seeing, and I mean seeing both!
The video they play here and showing the insides of the building you end up exploring, the smell of oil and machinery, it takes you back in time - it almost feels, as brutal as it sounds, hands on type of experience.
TIP: at the end of the tour you can purchase some whale tooth art - they also provide you with a receipt in case you have problems crossing the border with this type of merchandise

This museum, though small in size, offers a huge amount of information about the history of the whaling history on Pico Island. Very nice staff.

The museum displays helped explain an important aspect of Pico's history and economy. A dangerous, backbreaking industry that employed many in days gone by.

Despite the cruel history of the haunt of the whales, this museum is really worth a visit. The museum is situated in the old fabric and within the authentic scene a good overview is given of the industrial processing of the whales. All the original supplies including good English information give the visitors a peek behind the scene of this historical part of the Azorean history. They did a good job with this museum!

If you have an hour to kill, I recommend coming here. It's a great place to learn about the forgotten history of the whaling industry and about the lives of the men and women that shaped the whaling industry on Pico Island.
