A sad tribute to fallen soldiers
Aug. 2016 • Solo
With the centenial commemorations this year of the battle of Delville Wood still fresh in my memory, I wanted to see the memorial erected in Somerset East. The memorial was easy to find, situated on a traffic island on Nojoli Street, but oh, what a sad, neglected place!
Although the monument is a tribute to the men from Somerset East who fell in the Great War (world war one), the plinth also bears inscriptions of the names of the men of the district who paid the supreme sacrifice during the second world war.
It was heartbreaking to see so many names on that roll of honour and I reflected on how this loss would impact the families, but also be felt the wider community.
Maybe more heads of state and war-mongers should consider other alternatives to resolve conflict, rather than waging war.
