About
Situated in the port of Gravelines, halfway between Dunkirk and Calais, on the Opal coast, at the foot of Vauban’s fortifications, the craft village of Espace Tourville invites you to discover the construction site of the Jean Bart. A lot more than a ship, this maritime cathedral, emblematic of Louis XIV’s great navy, armed with 84 cannons, is being constructed thanks to the knowledge of the marine carpenters and blacksmiths, who are working in front of you, on the creation of this historic heritage, unique in France. An unusual and enriching activity that you can discover alone, with friends, or with your family.

Hard to believe that they will finish the job
Aug. 2021
The project started in 2003 and it is scheduled to be completed by 2030...you can easily understand that is rather an impossible bet. But the idea behind is so nice, people are so enthousiastic about, and they tell you some very nice stories. Worth the visit.

Merci beaucoup ToujoursLaRoute! Effectivement le projet peut paraitre impossible mais en vérité nous prouvons tous les jours le contraire en faisant grandir le Jean Bart de jours en jours. C'est une grande et belle aventure humaine que nous sommes enchanté de partager avec nos visiteurs.

Fabulous insight
Oct. 2019
The imposing skeleton of a great ship looms over the site, with background noise of people actually working on it. Learn in detail how the warships of the era were made, wonder at the extraordinary number of trees required, admire the use made of the offcuts, see the metal-working processes explained - and get refreshments in the adjoining pub. You can actually climb into the hull. Not cheap but you are helping create a true wonder for future generations to marvel at.

Put this on your tick list of places to visit In France
Sep. 2018 • Couples
Came on this by chance when coming to the end of a tour of France, saw a leaflet in the campsite and decided to have a look. It is one of the best attractions we have been to during our travels in France.
They are very welcoming to visitors and you get a very informative guided tour, then you are free to wander round having a look at the site, the ship and the work that is going on in the yard. Also the cafe/bar is a good place to finish up in for a drink or meal.
I hope we can get back sometime in the future to see the completed project

MAKE THIS A PART OF YOUR VISIT
Aug. 2017 • Friends
My first piece of advice is to visit their website. It's colourful, informative, and available in several languages including English. The folk there are very friendly, helpful, and keen to help you understand the massive project - a labour of love - they are undertaking, all with volunteers!

We didn't ask for the guided tour - we were given one anyway - friendly, informative and good fun. Then we were left to wander around on our own and at our own pace.

The Tavern which is part of the site is an excellent plade to have lunch - between 12 and 2pm. Everything fresh and cooked on ths spot - eat in, or out.

It's easy to think the Jean-Bart is not for me, but it could well be, so check out the site. Or just drop by, ask for a quick rundown before you decide to take the whole experience. They are absolutely fine by that.
