- CatIreland14 contributionsPleasant visit.Visited here recently to go to an event in the Helicon. The centre and cafe is lovely, wish I’d allowed more time to look around. Only letdown is seating in the Helicon. It’s bench style and If it’s sold out, it is very cramped with very little room between everyone. A lovely venue, but not the most comfortable.Dear CatIreland Many thanks for taking the time to review your vsit and for your kind words on the facility and the cafe. On the seating issue, please be assured we are grateful for your feedback and we are striving to have comfort levels addressed. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon, especially when you have more time to spend with us. - brynsdadChester, United Kingdom248 contributionsWords, Wisdom & WarmthWe enjoyed a wonderful visit to Home Place. The layout, atmosphere and exhibits were a perfect way to discover more about the great man himself. Hearing his voice reading so many of his own poems was evocative and unusually moving. The team are all lovely people too - they really do make you feel at home with typical Northern Irish warmth and natural hospitality. We allowed 2 1/2 hours but could have stayed all day, it is a relaxed but inspirational place. A must if you are in Northern Ireland. My 94 year old Aunt visited last year and was enthralled - it really does feel like Seamus is talkning to you. A brilliantly accessible venue for our wheelchair too, bravo!Dear brynsdad Thank you for your lovely review of your recent visit to Seamus Heaney HomePlace. We are delighted you found it to be relaxed but inspirational. Many people comment that being able to hear Seamus reading his own poetry is most definitely a higlight of the exhibition. - GrahameT68Peterborough, United Kingdom144 contributionsA marvellous celebration of a great man and his workAs a retired English teacher, I was very keen to come here having been recommended a visit by friends. I have to say it even exceeded my high expectations. So much to see and interact with, every aspect of Seamus Heaney's life and work was put into context in an extremely well designed and spacious centre. What a great man he was - and clearly loved by all who knew him. The staff here are knowledgeable and very helpful too. Thanks, Audrey! - NewryoneisbackNewry, United Kingdom3,177 contributionsFascinating and insightfulI’d met Seamus only a few times. The word genius is often misused, but I do think it applies to him. Last time I met him was accidental; it was Stansted Airport where he was displeased with a check - in lady; he was as the Ulster Scots would say in a splootèr and he crabbitly told me that Ryanair had made him furious, in that wonderful mid ulster dialect. So they even annoy genius. It’s as well he didn’t put pen up paper and include Ryanair in one of his books of poetry. They would likely have come off deservedly badly. We enjoyed the museum as it was focused on Seamus’s wider family and the strong influences of his upbringing and terroir growing up in this beautiful part of our island. So much of poetry is personal. Seamus isn’t my favourite poet, my favourite among his great works is his second book of poetry ‘Door Into The Dark’. I much prefer Keats with his range of poetic forms from the sonnet, to the Spenserian romance, to the Miltonic epic, with his own control of conflicting perspectives and his impish dry ironic wit but this museum stands as a wonderful tribute to one of our greatest modern poets.Dear Newryoneisback Thank you for your lovely review of your recent visit to Seamus Heaney HomePlace. We are delighted you enjoyed the exhibition. At least you got to meet Seamus, which many of us never got to do, even if it your meeting was accidental. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future. A centre created with love and care
We were greeted by a member of staff who was warm, very enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. There is real love for Seamus Heaney in this place.
The exhibition concentrating on his life and background brings his work and personality to life. I could have stayed longer to listen to his poems. Few poets read their own work as well.
A screen which enables you to access friends and personalities speak of Heaney and read his poetry is utterly absorbing.
Upstairs is a more personally creative section with an invitation to explore ones own creativity. Gave me an insight into how the adult Heaney could home in on a detail from his past and weave an unforgettable poem from it.
Good video about the Nobel prize also

When I found out we were staying 15 mins away from here I knew I had to visit, but I wasn't sure about bringing the kids along. I needn't have worried as there is a large activities area for Children to read or dress up or draw based on the themes of Heaney's poetry. This was staffed the day we visited by Louise, who was endlessly patient with the energies of a 6 and 3 year old. As their Dad stayed there with them that left me free to roam around and immerse myself in the exhibition. Add to that, kids under 7 get in free and adults were £10 each, so a very good value couple of hours out as a family.
You get an audio handset when you enter, which as you go around you can listen to the appropriate poems for each section, all read by Heaney himself. Nothing quite compares to hearing a poet read their own work and it is quite special to see the stories and photos of the people and things that inspired them at the same time as hearing them.
There is also an on site cafe which was reasonably priced and very tasty, and don't miss the sensory garden to the side of the building (past the allotments) where Heaney's poems are displayed next to the nature that inspired them.

A must see if you’re in this part of the world. Seamus Heaney is undoubtedly one of the worlds finest poets and this is a world class tribute to him. Well done on whoever created and curated this very special place. I really enjoyed it as did my children. Reignited my appreciation for Heaney and rural Ireland.

A beautifully thought-out museum celebrating the life of Seamus Heaney in the village where he was born and grew up. I particularly enjoyed the family photos, the readings by Heaney and the testimony by admirers, ranging from local schoolchildren to Bono. Everyone at the museum and the cafe (which serves excellent, moderately-priced food) was very welcoming. Clearly the community is proud of Heaney and I found that very moving. I can also recommend the Open Ground tour, especially Lough Beg and the Moyola river. We enjoyed the entertainment by Henry Normal in the delightfully intimate performance space.

This is a wonderful tribute to Seamus Heaney and is educational, informative and heart-lifting. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the building bright, interesting and very well maintained. The contents are, of course, the reason why so many people visit and it is so very well curated. One could spend a complete day here, but a few hours are a must. One gets to know A little of how talented he was as a genius of a poet, but how humble and generous he was as a man. Do go, you will be rewarded in so many ways for your visit. Excellent, I could not fault anything.

Can't speak highly enough about this special place. A world-class cultural venue and an inspirational setting for one of our greatest poets. We did the one day experience, which was incredibly good value. Scones and coffee on arrival, the exhibition, packed lunch and then the Open Ground tour. From the cafe to the customer service to the library, everything was outstanding. We spent all day there and I'd still go back tomorrow. Our 12 year old is now a huge Heaney fan and thoroughly enjoyed the arts and crafts centre and the sensory garden in particular.

Wonderful that this exists - thank you. Gentle question: isn't the guide's introduction, however well-intended (and of course nothing personal) a banal, redundant, ironic reduction of the poetic to the prosaic? Perhaps save it for school groups only? Or put it on a wall somewhere? If a volunteer, maybe save it for those who ask? If paid, please possibly spend the money on a young poet? Thank you again. What a life-changing, oxygenating genius he was. RIP.

Dear JMMD71
Thank you for the recent positive feedback and review of your time at Seamus Heaney HomePlace. In relation to the query on the introduction we provide to the exhibition, as I am sure you appreciate, we welcome visitors with a vast array of knowledge levels on Seamus Heaney and his work. We find this aspect of the experience is an opportunity for our guides to interact personally with our visitors and to provide context for the exhibition itself, especially for those with a limited knowledge of Seamus Heaney or indeed those encountering his work for the first time.
We welcome your comments and will, as always, consider and review.
Kind Regards

This review is in no way a reflection on the lovely museum and refers only to the cafe. I have always found the experience in this little cafe to be a delight but on this particular occasion I felt unwelcome and that my business was neither valued nor appreciated. The eye rolling and uncooperative manner in which I was served ( or rather wasn’t as nothing I ordered was actually delivered !) was dis-heartening. More staff training required ? Possibly or perhaps just a careful review of how your staff gel together and greet their customers?I’m not going to single out any particular staff member -but don’t let one rotten apple ruin your lovely cafe x

I must firstly apologise for taking so long to respond but we have had some IT issues with the Trip Adviser site. I am extremely disappointed to hear that your cafe experience was unsatisfactory. Please be assured that we have taken this up with our catering provider and would welcome an opportunity to discuss this further, if you so wish. We can be reached at seamusheaneyhome@midulstercouncil.org.
We welcome all feedback and thank you for the time you have taken to provide this information and I can assure you that this issue has been addressed and we would welcome the opportunity to see you back at HomePlace again.

My elderly parents and myself visited to complete the 1 day experience. From the moment we entered we felt extremely welcome & the staff were so friendly and helpful. The exhibition was insightful & reminded us of the talent of Seamus Heaney. The food was delicious and we had a wonderful afternoon driving around the area to the places that influenced his writing (& held memories for us all also), having our picnic at the strand at Lough Beg.

What a fabulous treat this visit was. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but it was brilliant. Loved every second. I'm not v knowledgable about Heaney but that didn't matter - it's such an informative and enjoyable experience.
Set over two floors the first tells you about his life and family; the second about his inspiration. All very clearly set out with great interpretation boards but the real treat is the audio - at every stage there is an audio number. You turn your audio on and listen to Seamus Heaney's voice reciting the relevant poem. It's so brilliantly done.
And there's a wonderful cafe so you can take a break at any point if you want to. And the reception staff were so welcoming and enthusiastic.
Really recommend
