Houghton Hall was built in the 1720s for Britain's First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. A beautiful example of Palladian architecture with interiors by William Kent. Currently, Houghton Hall is home to the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, Walpole's descendant, and his family. Situated in traditional parkland, the house is surrounded by white fallow and other exotic deer. There is an award-winning five-acre Walled Garden which includes a spectacular double-sided herbaceous border, a kitchen garden with arches and espaliers of apples and pears as well as a formal rose parterre. An impressive collection of contemporary sculptures and works by world-renowned artists such as Richard Long, Anya Gallaccio, Zhan Wang, Stephen Cox, Jeppe Hein, Rachel Whiteread and Phillip King are displayed in the grounds. There is a model soldier museum, a gift shop, a fully licensed cafe and picnic area and playground.

We live 10 minutes away but only when having family stay did we finally get round to visiting, we wish we did years ago.The walled garden is the best one I have ever seen. The symmetric lines, fountains and sculptures just look Amazing. At this precise moment the colour of the flowers are brilliant and the twisting wisteria is so... More

Went with she who must be obeyed. Saw the exhibitions in the grounds very impressive. Then coffee and battery recharge. Very nice but a little pricey. Looked in on the toy soldiers, my god how many again impressive. The house followed very very well looked after and very ostentatious, but worth a visit. Then the walled garden. That was something... The hall was the home to Sir Robert Walpole and a few of the rooms in the house have been restored to that time. The guides in the rooms are knowledgeable and friendly. What I really enjoyed was the walk around the grounds. You need the map to explore as there are sculptures hidden in the gardens. During the spring... More

Houghton Hall is simply delightful and close to us. Coupled with the largest exhibition of Richard Long's work it was unmissable. You can save a few pounds by booking in advance online but honestly, to see the Hall, Gardens and Exhibition for £18 is not excessive. Try to imagine how much it costs to keep the gardens looking as they... More

Visited to see the Richard Long exhibition but was blown away by the house, gardens and permanent sculptures. Everything - from the toilets and cafe to the knowledgeable, unbelievably friendly staff everywhere and the rooms, the plants, the fountains, the tapestries, paintings, clocks - is perfect. Built by the flamboyant Robert Walpole to dazzle and impress his high-profile guests, the... More

This is a beautiful place with stunning walled garden and grounds, which form the backdrop for interesting sculptures some of which are on permanent display, others are part of the fascinating Richard Long exhibition. Not as well known as some of the other attractions in North Norfolk but well worth seeking out.

Houghton Hall provided an excellent 3 hours of wandering and viewing. Stunning, beautifully planted and maintained gardens; a country house redolent of the opulent tastes of the first Prime Minister and the renovations of a Marchioness; a bonus in the Earth Sky landscape sculptures of Richard Long. The cafeteria provides excellent food and good service and the 'side' exhibitions such... More

From the artwork of Richard Long and others to the Venison rolls, a great experience in superb surroundings. The house is a fabulous example of its gender and furnished with informative assistants as well as unique items. Wholeheartedly recommended.

We last came here when the original pictures were brought back from Russia. We walked around the rooms on the first floor and they are impressive. Well presented and knowledgeable room staff. We also walked around the outside and saw all the current strange sculptural displays. Maybe I am a Philistine but I did not find them very appealing. We... More

Really enjoyed my visit, the walled garden is out of this world, the sculpture exhibition by Richard Long (Apr-Oct 2017) was good as were the permanent sculptures. The stable block is lovely as is the cafe. My only niggle, its a bit on the expensive side to see it all, but I enjoyed the day & I understand upkeep costs... More
