Beach was really nice. Mix of people from Matema chilling and doing washing, holiday makers, and a few boat owners giving rides. Special mention Noah’s beach cocktail bar - he speaks great English and can explain a lot about the area. He provides laid back food and also great cocktails and would definitely recommend visiting him!
During the week especially, you can have this beach all to yourself most of the time - it’s a hidden gem away from mass tourism.

It was wonderful and unforgettable experience tour as We Made Boots tour to ikombe village to experience the pots making by the natives (nkisi tribe, nyakyusa ) We also enjoyed the snorkeling 'as we got enough time identifying different colored fishes in different sizes , Livingston mountain ranges makes Lake Nyasa looks so great
There are also other attractions nearby like the Great Mwalalo waterfalls where you have some hiking about 45 minutes from Matema Beach,Lyakala small waterfalls and Lyakala cave! Thank you and you are warmly welcome to visit Matema Beach (Lake Nyasa)

Stayed two nights at the beach at Blue Canoe. Great stay. Staff were wonderful. Lodging in their waterfront cabins was great. Walked to the other hotels / village -- easy and enjoyable.

The beach is simply stunning with the mountain scenery besides. The water has a very comfortable temperature to swim or bath in the lake for a while!
The walk along the river is breathtaking, but at some point it gets difficult to continue the journey. I think one has to walk through the water. As I was not bothered I just returned.
I got really disappointed with the way they treated me and wanted to charge me for a walk along the river. There are no signs or a guard who would stop you to proceed the path leading next to the riverstream. Eventually when I returned to the village a guy explaining that he would be a tourguide stopped me. He said that it is not allowed to attempt this trail without a "guide". I explained my point of view and argued with him for a few minutes. He wanted me to go with him to some office to explain why I went there without permission.
I refused and mentioned that he would need to leave me alone, stopping to disturb my holidays!
A bit later suddenly another bunch of random guys came to stop me when I was walking along the beach. They were telling me all the same stories that the guy have told me before. Again they were insisting on me going to an office and sort this "crime".
They were not even listening to my explanations and just kept telling me that I must come with them with a raised voice!
Of course I got really upset with this guys and finally told them that I will continue my journey and they have to stop following me!
I am really sick of this type of trying to make money without any particular reason!

The beach was breath taking, though the "beach boys" were kind of unbearable. Every time I went in to swim, there was a hoard of men trying to pose for pictures with me and running after me to try to touch me. I know this is part of the culture but it's exhausting none-the-less. If you go over to where the fancy resort is, you're allowed to swim and they don't allow beach-boys there so I would highly recommend that! You can also spend the evening drinking, playing volleyball, and sitting by a camp fire there which is fun. You don't have to stay the night there to enjoy the amenities :)

Here's my take on the great waterfall debate: there's this incredible waterfall nearby which is mandatory to be taken by a guide. Someone commented on here that it is unreasonably priced, but as travellers, we have far more money than locals and so to complain about high prices is honestly ridiculous. Never brag about how little you payed a Tanzanian. Currently it costs about 26 USD and it is totally worth it. Getting there is a fun and challenging hike, and the reward is a spectacular waterfall with a super refreshing pool at the bottom to swim in. You'll probably get approached by a guide, but if nobody comes to you, your hotel or guestie will definitely know who to get in touch with.

Great place to visit for a quiet get away, though I did see very Large speakers in the open dining area, if used would be a shame and ruin the atmosphere.

The beach is great and the dugout canoe trip to the nearby pottery village is fun, but stay away from the hike to the waterfall until they fix the pricing. Right now the local village leader is in cahoots with a non-local tourist company to charge 45,000 shillings/person for the hike (on top of guide fees!). Just last week the price was a reasonable 3,000 shillings. Please stay away from “Matema Trekking Cultural Tourism.” It’s a scam.

We spent 3/4 lazy days relaxing on Matema beach slowly watching the world go by. People wash in the sea, repair nets, do their washing, prepare their fishing boats and play while others chill in the shade. The sand can get unbearably hot so the water is super refreshing once you enter. The mountains that line the lake make it look spectacular. At night the fisherman fish out on the lake and you can see their lights in the distance.
