Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

To climb the stairs to this monastery carved into rock is to travel back in time. There is a strict dress code; scarves are provided to cover women's heads and legs. Looking a bit like a babushka, I lit a candle and prayed. Then we wandered through the carved stone chapels to admire the Orthodox icons and the views of Chiatura below. Our guide, Levan, was a fountain of information on each of the saints depicted. We visited in late January and were the only tourists joining a few people who came to pray. A highly recommended stop if you come here to ride the cable cars.

After visiting quite a number of old Georgian monasteries and churches, I was expecting another tourist attraction. It's quite a climb up the steps to the top of the cliff to visit these chapels built into the caves, but it was so worth it! Women are required to wear skirts covering their knees and scarves covering their heads, but these are provided at the entrance for any who come unprepared. Men should also be dressed modestly in long pants and shirts covering their shoulders (no shorts or tank tops). When you enter, you will step back in time and will feel the presence of worshipers from throughout the centuries. We were there on an Orthodox holy day (Exhaltation of the Cross), so the main church had a service going on. There were many local worshipers, but no other tourists. We were greeted warmly by the priest after the service, though, and made to feel very welcome by all. I highly recommend a visit if you want to connect with the ancient spirituality of Georgia.

We started our visit to Chiatura from the monastery Mgvimevi - located on a rock above the bottom of the valley. A staircase leads to it, and a panorama of the city can be heard from the terrace. The monastery itself was partly embedded in the rock - built into the cliff walls. The Mgwimewi Monastery was built in the 8th century. Its facades are decorated with crosses and decorative borders. In the middle of the church there are murals from the eighth century, and the southern wall is covered with paintings from the sixteenth century. Under the layer of one of the murals, an older portrait was found depicting Rati nobleman from the Rachy region together with his wife and brother Nanny Kachaberisa. On the occasion of a visit to Chiatura, it is worth seeing this monastery.

With a rich history, fascination location and nice interior and exterior I can recommend visiting this monestery. Easily accesible, even though you obviously have to climb some stairs to enter it. Nice views over the valley as well.

You have to cover yourself if you are a woman when entering most of the monasteries, especially this one as it is women´s monastery. The place is truly holy, you can feel it all the time. Georgian people are very religious and you can see it in all the monasteries, which makes it a very special experience. The view is not so bad either, as you can see the old mining town from there, where time has stopped. Literally. You´ll believe when you see it.

I thought it would be like the church in the cave in Budapest, but this is more open and built into side of cliff. It was beautiful, but difficult to understand all that is going on within the church. Women must cover their heads and knees. They provide scarves.
