- Allen S1 contributionBeautiful beach owner by a beautiful personHansen Bay is a beautiful beach with calm waters and beautiful aquamarine life. Its owner, Thalia, enhanced our experience due to her warm heart and is the very embodiment of hospitality. My wife had a headache the morning we arrived at Hansen Bay and it sustained all the way up until we decided to conclude our stay at the beach. After speaking to Thalia about this as we were packing, she quickly made her way back to her home to fetch us some Tylenol in order to save us the expense of purchasing a bottle. She is truly the highlight of this beach and the reason most people should come to this location. We love you Thalia!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- Tifanie RLawrenceburg, Tennessee5 contributionsThank you Thalia!!This place is amazing!! It was so beautiful we ended up coming back for snorkeling three out of the four days we were there. Thalia is so warm and welcoming, she has so many accomodations from snorkel gear to kayaks. The coral reefs were full of colorful fish and pretty shells, the beach is even home to a couple sea turtles and octopus. If you are coming to St John this is one beach you have to visit. We will DEFINITELY be back...and soon!!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 November 2023
- BrodelrsYorktown, Virginia6 contributionsSpectacular beach and snorkeling! We learned of Hanson’s Beach through searching for the best places to snorkel on St John’s. It’s on east end of the island, basically lands end. We were thrilled on arrival, no crowd, beautiful beach, and a down home greeting from Thalia who manages the beach. She opens her land to the public for donations, quite a concept in this day and age. We settled under a palm for shade, took in the unfettered view and donned our snorkeling gear. Pelican rock sits a couple hundred yards out and provided the best choral and fish variety and clearest waters of the six beeches I’ve hit so far this trip. It’s a fantastic place to spend the day. Bring your own food and water, port a John’s are available. The ride is narrow over some hills so take your time, it’s worth it ten times over.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 November 2023
- John M17 contributionsGreat day at the beachThis Beach is at the far eastern part of St.John. it is quiet, calm, and not crowded. The lady that owns this beach requires a donation to stay there but it is worth it. For very small fees you can get covered picnic table, huge floats for 10 or more people, free chairs. And more. She was very kind and very deliberate in explaining the rules. It is a private beach but open to anyone. It was an extremely nice beach and was a treat to go there. Thank you, John mclVisited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 December 2023
- scotthE3162UL100 contributionsWorth the Drive! So the drive there is a bit of a thrill but very worth the chill that awaits. Ladies were very friendly and helpful. $20 donation and you get a tent and chairs. Water was beautiful with great snorkeling. Very calm waters. Great place to spend the kind of day you come to St John for. Bring your own food and beverage. Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024
- Tom Y6 contributionsGreat beach and great snorkelingGreat snorkeling!! Saw rays, sea turtles, and beautiful fish and coral! This was a great find at the eastern tip end of St. John’s. We snorkeled for 4 days on both St. Thomas and St Johns and the best we found after going to about a dozen places. This is a private beach that accepts donations. The amenities are adequate, but the lack of crowds and the beauty of the beach and water was amazing!! Hostess was very sweet!!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 March 2024
- Megan J2 contributionsMust visit beach! This is one of my favorite beaches to visit on St John! There are no crowds, parking could not be easier, and the beach is beautiful. This is a private beach but the owner is there all day and all that is asked is a donation. They have paddle boards and kayaks available to rent for unbeatable prices! Truly one of the greatest gems on St. John. Huge thanks to Thalia for sharing her little slice of heaven with us.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- Heidi M8 contributionsWorth a visit.Read all the reviews and decided to try this, directly after our Brown Bay Trail hike. It really was lovely. Parked right under a perfect palm tree and had the best shade we've had so far, at any of the beaches... no one hassled us for money but they did ask for a donation as we walked in - after that, no problem. There were more people than I would've thought at this end of the island, but still a nice quiet spot and worth visiting, for sure.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024
- Robert B7 contributionsHansen Beach , March 20! Perfect! We had the best day at Hansen Beach ! Thalia is a wonderful hostess ! She greeted us as we arrived and is so friendly. She has canopies and loungers available for a donation of $20 which was so with every penny ! The beach is absolutely beautiful, the water was warm and beautiful. Thalia is so friendly and a joy to talk to ! We will definitely be back on our next visit !!! - Rebecca FCleveland, Ohio75 contributionsOne of our favorite beaches in St JohnOne of our favorite beaches ! East end location so about 40 minute drive from downtown. Donations accepted to help maintain the beach. We got to snorkel with sea turtles as we spent the day lounging under palm trees ! Be sure to bring a cooler and snacks. Options for renting kayaks etc are available as well as very clean port-o-potties. Highly recommend as it is away from more congested and touristy areas!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 April 2024

Salt well use to be our go to place. Not anymore. Greed has taken over once again at Hansen. We moved to the smaller beach after the Lime out crowd moved into Hansen and prices there became ridiculous. Well looks like saltwell has done the same. It is no longer a donation even tho the box says so. They will make sure you pay $10 per chair $10 per umbrella. There is not an ounce of donation to anything. They just say it because they are not a legit business with the government. I don’t mind paying and prob would have donated more but don’t ask for a donation then demand the price.

As first time visitors to St. John’s Island my family and I highly recommend spending a few hours at this beach! From the moment you arrive you are greeted by the friendliest women and are offered everything you could ever need for a beach day. $ per hour to use any paddle board, kayak or sailboat and the views are amazing. There are even free lounge chairs for you to use if you don’t want to lay on your towel!!
Worth the visit!

We were staying on the other side of the island and had selected one day to go to the beaches in Coral Bay area. Our friends who have been renting the same house for a week in Coral Bay for 12 years highly recommended Hansen Bay Beach. We arrived and were warmly greeted by a woman who gave us the lay of the land. No parking fee, chairs and awnings free, kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear for a great price (they were slow yet regular prices posted were still reasonable). Port a potties only and no food as the beach food truck moved elsewhere to try and stay afloat. We had the most enjoyable and relaxing day at this beautiful beach. The water is calm and great for families with small children, but we had fun just sitting in our chairs in the water trying to destress from the chaos in the world around us. All of the staff checked on us to make sure we were okay, suggested places to get lunch, and only asked for a donation (whatever we felt). We gave her what we were charged at other beaches just for parking or entrance and then a little something extra. They were all so gracious and my family hopes and prays that they are able to get through these surreal times. If you are on the island stop by and say the family from Connecticut misses them and says hello.

Two women own a piece of property leading to the beach. They provide toilet facilities, tables, chairs, and manage parking. They cannot charge a fee so they ask for a donation. No pressure. Another donation is requested if you use their kayaks or other water equipment. The place is really well kept and organized, and the facilities are appreciated. The snorkeling is excellent – all the way out to Pelican Rock. There is a lot to see – including turtles, rays, and the usual array of fish, corals, and squid. This odd arrangement may sound sketchy, but it is not. Its worth ten bucks to have everything available, orderly, and nice.

Spent a beautiful Xmas morning here recently. It’s a challenging ride to get here, given the hilly and narrow nature of the roads in St. John but it is worth it. Thalia runs a no thrills set up here but it is one of the nicest beaches I have ever been on. We arrived early, gave a donation and had a tent and chairs plus unlimited use of Thalia’s floats, kayaks and noodles for the day. People have complained about the donation policy, but this is someone’s family property that they have opened up to the public. Well worth the donation! Go early as by early afternoon it started to get more crowded.

Great private beach to sit, chill and look at the boats getting out of the December winds. Anywhere on St John you can snorkel, that’s a given, same with this beach. Owner was extremely friendly, informative and gracious. When we were there, they had free to use paddle boards and kayaks, they simply asked you let them know who has what so they can keep tabs on you. They do accept and ask for donations, this is so they can stay open to the public. Don’t take advantage of their hospitality, donate - donate - donate. You are on vacation, be kind to the locals for opening up their homes to you and tip big. ~Cheers.

Went to Hansen for a day at the beach with my family while on vacation for a week in St.John. Hansen was our favorite beach of the entire week and for the second year in a row!! The beach is absolutely breathtaking and the water is crystal clear with nice flat sand. We went snorkeling both days and saw several turtles and other nice fish, super easy to snorkel and see turtles right off the shore!!
The parking is right off the beach and the staff is absolutely amazing and super accommodating. At Hansen the staff can set you up with plenty of shade and awesome water sports and you pay everything by donation, we were very impressed with the level of service from the lovely welcoming and hardworking staff. Overall Hansen is a true oasis in St.John with breathtaking views, water, beach and plenty to do through the day if you want but if not it’s the perfect relaxing beach day in paradise!
You can also find skinny legs just a short drive away!
Absolutely worth the trip to Coral Bay Area, a magical and spectacular day in the sun :)

This lovely piece of paradise is overseen by the warm, friendly Thalia. She’s low-key while ensuring you have everything you need for the day. At her private beach she offers clean portable bathrooms, shade, picnic tables, and kayaks. She asks for
donations; kayaks are $10/hour. Two large turtles hang out on the reefs close by. A dog was loose (Someone else noted multiple dogs.) and chased away the donkey that tried to nab my sandwich. Good dog!

This will be the 5th time my wife and I have been visiting Saint John, so much so that the last time we visited we invested in property. We decided to invite our best friends with our family this last trip and they fell in love with the island which is no surprise. My wife decided to try Hansen Bay Beach based on the great reviews. We decided to get up extra early to be one of the first guest there. We ended up being the first guest and was met by a very nice gentleman named Caleb (Unsure of spelling) who explained the entire set up for our visit. After hearing his very kind and professional spill, he pointed to two very nice Cabanas next to each other which was perfect for us and our best friends. After paying 20 dollars each and making a generous donation, we started placing our things on the tables where a lady was laying down on her phone. Caleb stated they were just there until guest started arriving and we were fine to start getting situated. It became very uncomfortable when the lady was not moving from our Cabana that we were told to go to and continued her conversation on her phone. She was very, very , very rude and snapped at our guest who was switching beach chairs for better ones. After my guest were told they couldn't switch any chairs they decided to go to the cabana that had better chairs. This rude lady told them they cannot move from the cabana they were at even though there were no other guests on the property. After receiving such rude comments from this lady I inquired if she was Talia because I had heard such great reviews about her. She advised me she was not, and that she was irritated that we were putting our property on the cabana when she was on the phone. I advised her that was the cabana we were told to go to and she stated we had an attitude. I would have never gone to that cabana if the gentleman had not stated we could go there. This made our stay there very uncomfortable and I was very displeased based on the reiews. We decided to stay there for a little while and the children decided not to swim because of the situation. We decided to just take a loss of our purchase and generous donations and go to a different beach. Once again, Caleb was very professional and kind but the lady that he was with was very, very unprofessional and rude to where it ruined our morning. My friend told me that she RUDELY told her that this is her sanctuary and we are just on vacation so go do your thing. We will never ever go there based on this lady personally, but I would not suggest people not to try it because I don't think this was the norm based on the great reviews.

My partner and I spent two weeks on St John and visited nearly every beach and snorkel spot that we could, only to discover that Hansen was our absolute favorite. It’s a really pretty drive to Hansen Bay in itself, and the beach and scenery is certainly enough to satisfy most, but the snorkeling at this bay was the tops of all we experienced. So much Marine life, and great coral (on the far left side of the bay), great water clarity, and just very comfortable and accessible! The host woman was very kind and helpful, and we were very happy to make a donation when we visited for the great value that the bay offered us. It’s more remote than much of St John, and that is a huge perk for us as well. We visited Hansen 4 different times on our trip, including our last day on the island, because we loved it so much. It’s the best and I can’t recommend it enough.

Hi , We are staying in the east end for the month, of Feb.. We rescued a little pooch 10lb, from
Puerto Rico last august, she is sweet, in fact , she has passed her training as a therapy dog and now visits kids and elderly in care facilities.
I have heard that your beach allows dogs, I am inquiring if that is correct,,she is not much. of a swimmer but would love to just sit in her basket and enjoy the sun, we are from New England the cold weather has been quite a change for her.
Thanks,
Phyllis Adams

Is this beach access gated or can you arrive before the 9am opening time this page shows?

It was not gated in May 2021. I think that you can arrive prior to 9am, and they will ask for a donation when they open.

I am contemplating a family vacation to the US Virgin Islands a big priority is close if not beachfront access to calm white sandy swimming. I’m struggling to find information about if that is something readily available in the Virgin Islands. We have a disabled daughter and want her to be able to enjoy the beach. Does anyone know if any of the islands are conducive to that
Written 18 January 2019
St.john has a couple of beaches that are disabled access, but the walking terrain of the island due to the hilly nature of the place would not make St.John my 1st choice

Greetings, Why are dogs permitted to roam (and defecate) on the beach. I thought dogs were not permitted on V. I. Beaches? Thank you.

Thank you for your inquiry, Hansen Bay Beach is a privately owned family beach, access to it, other than public access, is on private property, it is not National Park. Those pet owners that use the beach should be well informed by now regarding the rules and regulations for having a Pet on the beach. If for some reason there was an instance where a mishap occurred, it will be addressed and resolved. I hope this answers your question and your Hansen Bay Beach visit was otherwise pleasureable.
