When travelling from Rabati Castle to Vardzia, this is a nice stop on the way. You can walk around the castle, but mind your step as there are no guard rails at all.

Definitely worth a stop along the way to or from the Vardzia caves. Huge fortress with great over the surrounding valley.

We were in the area back in September 2019 and were driving to Vardzia. The fortress is just off the junction with the main road where you turn to head to Vardzia Monastery. We'd already visited some fortresses so decided not to stop and just took pictures as we drove past. If you're into fortresses, then this one looks great as a lot of it is still standing and they're also restoring the rest. Definitely worth a stop off if you're on the way to Vardzia and have time - it's easy to get to and also in a stunning location to take photos.

There is a steep walk up to the site from the car park. Overall, the fortress is reasonably good condition. It is, apparently, one of the oldest fortresses in the country. Some parts are of the original construction, with additional reconstruction work adding to the overall concept of what the fortress was like all those centuries ago. Whilst there is not a great deal to see within the fortress, it is worth a brief visit. The views over the valley. the town and the Mtkvari River are exceptional.
