Stunning views and a gorgeous walk - quite easy terrain so not difficult to do. Shame there isn´t a loop, though to be honest the 12km there and back offer a different perspective.

PR-PNPE-3 “La Ruta del Cares” is known to be one of the top trails to do in the Picos! We decided to go on this hike from Poncebos to Cain…and back! It is 22km roundtrip and around 3 hours each way. We went in the summer and started out at 8:30am when the sun was still coming up as parking fills up fast. The trail starts off a bit steep and meanders along the edge of the mountain. It does start to level out after a while. The ground is rocky and you should wear walking shoes. We had planned on walking the same route back however we didn’t bank on how exhausted we would feel from doing the hike out. We had just hiked 11km the previous day so probably were feeling a bit tired! It was nice to rest and have an ice cream in the little cafes in Cain before starting the journey back. We bought extra water in Cain as used up our bottles hiking there. It was a lot hotter on the way back! The views were fabulous in both directions. If you don’t like heights then there are parts where I would not recommend looking down! The trail does get quite narrow in places (less than 2 metres wide) and some sheer drop-offs into the canyon. Also we would not do this hike in bad weather as can imagine that it could get quite slippery. We were very lucky with the weather as there was a storm visible as we finished the hike which was bad the following day. It was fun to see lots of mountain goats on the trail. Just to note: Due to the location of the trail/mountain range, it would be a very expensive taxi to get back to Poncebos from Cain. It would actually take longer to go back in a car than it would take to hike it.

This is a 12 kilometer walk from Poncebos to Cain on a well kept path. It is also very popular and can be busy at times. It is not too hard but expect to walk uphill for a bit from Poncebos. The path will take you high above the river Cares and offers some really nice views. Good footwear is important.

It is possible to start the walk from either Poncebos or Cain. For those who are uncomfortable completing the full 12km each way, I would recommend starting at Cain. The path is easier (relatively level) and the scenery (in my view) is more spectacular, as you walk towards Poncebos the gorge tends to widen out. Parking is available at Cain with enterprising locals allowing you to park in fields close to the village centre in exchange for a small fee. The walk from Poncebos (parking also available, mainly along the side of the road) starts with a long uphill walk, not particularly steep but bit of a slog nonetheless. The path is reasonably wide and well made throughout the length of the gorge but keep your eyes focussed in front of you as there is a steep drop to the river, if you don't! Most people start from Poncebos due to the ease of access. It takes quite a while to reach Cain from the north - from memory it was about 2 hours from Potes. It is an attractive route though with several places to stop for photos, the view from the pass near Santa Marina de Valdeon is particularly spectacular.

The Ruta del Cares was a fabulous experience that I recommend to all lovers of hikes and nature. The trail itself winds along the river - sometime high up - sometimes closer to the river. About 12 km each way. The path is narrow on some places which might be scary for those with vertigo. Personally, I`m not a fan of heights but found this path not scary - I spent the time enjoying the scenery. Like most other writers, I recommend to bring plenty (and I mean plenty) of water. We walked Poncebos-Cain and back. During return the temperature must have been 30+. Also use proper boots. The path may be easy and suitable for sneakers but the part from Poncebos and up is steep and slippery when wet, especially going down. Secure footing and protect your ankles. Bring proper camera as well. I regret not having brought both a proper wide angle and zoom lense. One more recommendation is to start early (we started at sunrise) to avoid the crowds, the heat and securing parking. We are in our late 60s and walked slowly enjoying every minute. Still we used only in excess of 3 hours each way. Perfect for the day, including a light lunch in Cain. Finally, there are said to be several good hikes in Las Arenas that we just may try next time.
