Beautiful 15th century church

The colourful windows are amongst the oldest in Europe. Also the silver shrine holding the reliques of Saint Gommarus is of rare beauty.

Overwhelming initial experience once you enter the church. Extremely tall building within a fairly modest floorplan but the feeling of space is very apparent. The strikingly ornate pulpit and rood screen are utterly breathtaking. I loved the simplicity of the Gothic lower register of slender columns demarkating the Nave. The middle upper sections and vaulting represent later periods and are... More

For that small town this church is really big. Reminds me Paris Norte Dame style. Inside half church you can see for free but half is paid if you are not from Lier.

We donated money to the church and went on a tour by one of the staff. He told is in great detail the history of this beautiful building, the founding as well as having to hide the relics from invading Nazis during the 2nd world war. The church is just amazing, the detail, the art that has been put in... More

Wow......we were fortunate to be given a personal tour of the cathedral, as there were no printed guides in English. What was supposed to be only a few minutes, turned into an hour as the custodian seemed delighted by our interest and questions. Especially fascinating is their 800kg solid silver reliquary which is carried and paraded in the streets every... More

Lier is an attractive town with an impressive main square town hall, and with added bonus of a small river rubbing thought the centre. However this was an unexpected highlight an impressively large church with a beautiful interior. The medieval rode screen and the 15th century stained glass in the chancel are particularly fine. Even by the high standards of... More

I have been in the city of Lier many times before, but never visited the Saint Gummarus Church from the inside. This was definitely a missed opportunity in the past. Opening hours do vary a lot between summer and winter time and also depend a lot on the day/time during the week. The cathedral is still undergoing a lot of... More

I live in Lier, and however small, the city has it's "must see" attractions, all within easy walking distance. Highlight for me is the Sint-Gummaruskerk, fantastic example of "brabants-gotisch" building style (building started 14th century, and completed almost 2 centuries later). Fantastic stained-glass windows, mostly 15th century, a beautiful 800 kg silver shrine of Sint-Gummarus, patron saint of the city.... More
