We came there by scooter and then took a path up to the crater. You can go around the crater and it takes another 40 minutes, with two pitstops and viewpoints. Nice walk and a nice view. Also, Mahawu crater is a nice spot for birdwatching, especially birds of prey.

I was here many times few years ago, I used to guide some tourists but also alone or together with friends. I liked a lot this place, was naturally beautiful. Visitors used to walk from the main road about 30-45 minutes to the top of the volcano through a natural path between veggies plantation and crossing a rainforest which were really interesting and surprisingly beautiful. Plenty of birds, butterflies, sometimes you can see snake or lizard and you can meet friendly local farmers. I met quiet often a farmer on their way home after collecting palm wine and they always willing to share some for tourists to taste it.
Its very pity now the local government or whoever it was, they built a long concrete road until the new parking place just couple of hundreds meter from the top.

If you like a stiff walk and are interested in a volcano you must go here. From the main road in Tondano you follow the road passing the pagoda and the road will take you there. It gradually narrows to a path and finally to stairs. This 5km walk will reward you with a superb view of a perfect 50 year old Caldera and also of the city and Mount Lokon. Very rewarding and free of charge.

Very short stairs climb to arrive on top and have a good sight of the volcano crater. You can see traces of sulfur and steam coming out which means that it is still a bit active. It is possible to walk around the crater.
Only downside is that the trail and stairs to go up is not really maintained, lots of rubbish and plastic bottles there. Quite slippery on the way down, be careful.

Mahawu volcano is one of the active volcanoes you can find on the Tondano Caldera. Famous place for bird watchers. In the dense forest we could observe 15 different species in 3 hours:
Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher, Turquoise Flycatcher ssp. septentrionalis, Eyebrowed Thrush, Mountain white-eye, Sulawesi Pygmy Woodpecker, Citrine Canary-flycatcher ssp.helianthea, Black-fronted White-eye, Yellow-sided Flowerpecker, Red-headed Myzomela, White-bellied Imerial Pigeon, Crimson-crowned Flowerpecker, Sulphur-vented Whistler, Great Hanging Parrot, Superb Fruit Dove, Scaley-breasted Kingfisher.
Bring your binocular and start about 5 am in the morning.
Good luck!

We did the walk from Tomohon and got a free ride on the back of a truck a part of the road.
The rest we had to walk but the rice fields where very beautifull.
Very nice scenery and also some rainforest.
On the top you can walk all round the rim of the vulcano like we did, but take care of the sharp long grass.Still smoke coming out.
It is also dangerous, one local tourist fell down the vulcano a week before we arrived and died.

I read on tripadvisor that Jotje Lalan was a very experienced guide for tours to Lokon volcano, but I didn’t know that he can organized whichever tour you want to do in Tomohon (waterfalls, lakes, mounts, rafting…). We did a full-day trek with him and we saw many interesting places in Tomohon, including Mount Mahawu, that would have been impossible to discover by ourselves in one day. He is a very enthusiastic guide. He adapted to our needs and requests. He also took many photos to us that he later sent me by whatsapp. Thank you Jotje!
