Saturday morning golf
Jul. 2021
Had not played this course in a long time. Pleasantly surprised at the condition of the course, fairways being watered and in good condition, greens firm as they should be in winter conditions. Facilities unfortunately closed due to Covid 19 restrictions. Cost reasonable, R360 per player, cart R280.

Highly recommended golf trip

Amazing golf course full of wildlife.

No idea why there are many negative reviews. When I played in January 2021 the greens looked great and I had one of the best golf experiences of my life. Maybe the rain solved the issues?

GOLF IN THE WILD
Feb. 2020 • Business
I always participate in the annual Marula Festival Golf Tournament at the Hans Merensky Golf Club. This is the best golfing pleasure alongside the wild animals. The breathtaking scenery at hole 17 with the sound of Hippos in the river is out of this world. Although we need to exercise caution all the time, it is always fun to play there.

A gem of a layout being slowly strangled. Go somewhere else.
Aug. 2019
This was once one of SA's most renowned golf courses. Unfortunately it now looks like it's run by a green keeper with either no budget or no knowledge of the game. The layout is great, as is the location within a mini game reserve, that's where it rapidly ends. (A) You can get away with bad fairways and other faults but NOT poorly maintained and poorly cut greens, these were probably amongst the worst I have ever experienced (B) Bunkers should have sand in, not gravel and they should be raked by staff at least every second day (C) Considering the standard on offer, a mid-week, off season visitor green fee (2019) of R380 plus R100 for the right to use YOUR OWN golf cart is unreasonable. This would be acceptable on a half decent course but certainly not as we found it. Drop your price, get more rounds and use the money on your greens. So very sad indeed. PS: If the owners read this, we did notice some nice new pathing and what looks like a new t-box or two, but please, golfers would rather see some effort shown on the greens.

Such a Shame, could be a fantastic golf course

Just came back from SA, visiting friends, Kruger National Park and playing golf.
This course has so much going for it but unfortunately it needs a lot of TLC. Its still playable and not too expensive for us Brits at the moment.

Some of the greens have no grass in places only sandy patches but there seems to be money being spent on new concrete paths but even they haven't been completed.
There seems to be a strangely positioned pile of stones across the fairway of the 7th. I can see there is a case for drainage but there must be a better solution. The fairways are very bumpy when in the cart and have no grass at all in places. The concrete water features have no water in them. The course is in a obvious drought area but but this is known and this course was one of the best in SA.

The Drive into the estate even needs some serious investment as the road is just a dust track, the dirt roads on the Kruger were in better condition.

I took the trouble of walking around the hotel area only to find lots of unfinished building work and a huge pile of cement bags not far from the entrance. It looks like projects get started but never completed.
I also played at Highland Gate Estate in Dullstroom. Perhaps a visit there is required to see how it should be done. The place was full of golfers from other clubs on golf days out.
Hans Merensky could be that inviting for golfers.

Overall its not very inviting, If I had booked this as a golf break I would have been very disappointed. Luckily I stayed at a friends place and only played golf there.

Poorly Maintained Golf Course
Aug. 2017 • Couples
My wife and I have been staying at a lovely AirBNB on the Hans Merensky Golf Course, and when we arrived we were excited to fit in as many rounds as we could during our visit. Sadly, the course is in horrible shape.

The Greens:

- it's like they've never been rolled, therefore they're incredibly bumpy and brutally slow. It honestly feels like you have to hammer each put at the hole and hope for the best. Truly maddening.

- I also experienced three greens on one day that literally had standing water all over them from over-watering. There's nothing like having to putt through a small lake. How they could screw this up is beyond me.

The Tee-boxes:

- I can't think of one of them that was flat and even. It's a struggle to find a spot where you aren't teeing the ball up above or below your stance.

The Bunkers:

- very inconsistent. Some had sand in them, others were like hitting off of concrete

The Fairways:

- there are lots of warthogs on the course, and they've done a ton of damage to the fairways. Holes 4, 5 and 6 are particularly bad. You do get a free drop from any damage caused by animals, but it's honestly difficult to find a clean spot to actually make the drop. Walking those holes made me think of what it must be like to walk the craters of the moon.

This all is such a shame. The course has so much potential. At the very least, they should level the tee-boxes and devote the majority of their attention to having spectacular greens that run fast and true. Until then, I wouldn't waste your time or your money, unless of course you just want to go hack it around for an afternoon.

That all being said, the woman working in the pro shop was an absolute delight (I believe here name was Susan). She gets a huge thumbs up for her great service and friendly demeanour.

Rip Off.............
Jan. 2017 • Family
Visited from 30/12/2016 to 06/01/2017:

The Chalet we stayed in was fantastic BUT as for the rest of the facilities/ amenities in Hans Merensky Hotel and Spa - absolutely disappointing.

GOLF: Was the worst experience I've had in years. There are no fairways and the Greens are equal to a lawn. Poorly managed course and worst of all the green fees are ridiculous. If your holiday is planned around golf and you are used to sort of mid to high end Golf Courses in Gauteng, please think again.

Amenities: The swim mining pool was green and apparently it's under maintenance. Seriously! It's not as if we don't have swimming pools where we come from. Green swimming pool is NOT under maintenance it's lack of maintenance. Apparently after tons of trickery and questioning, the putt putt course has been under construction for years now.

The owner needs to wake up and smell the wild air - if something doesn't get done soon, the fees/ cost/ charges levied to visitors/ guests does NOT equal the value.

Regards,

Genuinely Disappointed Guest
