This is the most relaxing and beautiful place I've visited. It is gorgeous and so calm, at night you can only hear the water. Try to go on weekdays and not in high season as you'll be able to enjoy the scenery without so much noise. If at all possible, try to plan your trip to be there during a full moon, it will be lit all night and it's as clear as a late afternoon but more magical and peaceful. Also, if you can, stay at the Sindamanoy hotel as it has the best view of the hotel. Just be aware that it's a little bit cold as it is located 2800 mts above sea level and it's humid, so it get pretty cold at night, but it's totally worth it. You can also visit the lovely town that resembles Swiss chalets where you must go to the Naturalia restaurant that has the best food in town, and in Nariño and probably in Colombia. You can ride a boat and take a trip around the lake and get pictures of the landscapes and some animals. Just lovely!!

Very easy DIY half trip from Pasto.
Grab a collectivo taxi either at Plaza de Carnaval or at Calle 22/Carretera 7 (behind Hospital) for 4.000 (per person - 4 passengers) to the port of RIO ENCANO.
There is a official point to board the boat for 35.000 (price for a boat) to ISLA COROTA, or walk all the way till end of canal as there are other boatmen with slightly lower price 30.000.
Park entrance at the island is 2.500, half an hour is enough to walk all the way to and back from lookout.
Then your boat will cruise around the island and after it returns to the port via charming canal running through the village.
There are plenty of possibilities to have a local specialty RAINBOW TROUT. We got ourselves a set lunch for 6.000 (big bowl of fresh soup, half of the trout with rice, salad, french fries and drink). It was delicious and fresh.
There are cars/minivans parking just out of the port to take you back to the Pasto.

Great trip!!! You have to go to el puerto which is the little village where the magic starts. You´ll find the boats that will take you to the island of La corota where you can stop and walk through the protected flora and fauna area. THIS TRIP COST NO MORE THAN 25.000 PESOS OR 13 USD, NO MORE, and pay when the trip ends. In your walk up stairs ask about the HERVIDOS and have one to get warm. It is a drink made of fruit juice an a pinch of AGUARDIENTE. If you don´t like liquor just tell them and they will make a special one for you without it.
When you go back to el puerto my best advice is to eat at REFUGIO DEL SOL and ask for TRUCHA ASADA (grilled trout) or the even better TRUCHA AHUMADA (smoked trout) and to dink another Hervido or Aguapanela!!!

Take a small boat that leads to the island, walk through it and feel its magic.
Coming back there are good restaurants with fresh fish.
An unforgettable day.

It was a fantastic experience, and very close to nature. I took two different water taxis in order to get to the island of Crota, it was a little cold, and windy, and scenery was inspiring, took amazing pictures of the lake, mountains, the church. On the way back I had dinner at a local restaurant, and ate the most delicious smoke trout, that I had ever had. I recommend going there if you are able to appreciate nature at its best.

This lake is worth a visit for the day, or stay in the 2 shore hotels. Not suitable for swimming (cold water) but fun for boat trips -there are many water taxis available at the 'Puerto'-.

We traveled for 1 hour from Pasto. The sancuary is VERY dissapointing. Didn't see even one bird. Didn't even hear one bird. The view is nice but does not worth the travel. There were too many people. Had to pay for the banio and put down the water myself with a bucket.

This is a great day trip from Pasto.
Easy to get there by collectivo from near park Bolivar (5000 COP), travel about 40 minutes through very pretty landscape.
We got out of the bus by the turn to the village and walked the two kilometers to enjoy a slow arrival to the village. This is very pleasant stroll.
The village itself is incredibly pictoresque and cute with lots of colors and wooden houses on stilts, completely different from everything we've seen in Colombia.
You can take a boat to the island (50000COP per boat) and hike through a beautiful forest to a viewpoint (entrance fee 10000 COP). The boat will wait for you. It's also a great place to swim if you don't mind cold-ish water.
In the town there are plenty of restaurants with set menus with a local trout - delicious (8000 - 12000 COP per meal).

Really great day out! Plus the weather is usually better by the lake than in Pasto.
Highly recommended!
