Beautiful castle, loads of rooms and (finally!!) an English tour! What the guide lacked in enthusiasm, he made up for in dry humor and knowledge about the castle. There are also sometimes events going on, so be aware of that.

We took a day trip to Krivoklat on a Sunday late in June 2013. It was 377 kc round-trip for two for the fare from Hlavní Nádraží. Note: make sure you take the fast train. We took the local train and it made about 6 stops on the way to Beroun, where you have to take another train to Krivoklat. We defininitely should have paid more attention there.
The small town around the castle is picturesque and idyllic, to say the least. It was 190 kc each to see the "full castle tour". The tour itself is in Czech but they give you a printed paper to follow along. However, the printed notes do not cover the entire tour, so we were just guessing about 3/4 way through. I do still recommend the tour though since you have access to areas of the castle that the public cannot see.
The courtyard of the castle is filled with small shops that sell local handicrafts, and a small cafe. It was a weekend, so I fully expected to see people dressed in medieval outfits doing things, but alas, just an old dude charging 60 kc to shoot a crossbow. Maybe the talent was on strike?
All-in-all, a great country respite from Praha, especially if you're staying for a while. Pro-tip: take the small path up the hill into the little village to check out a beautiful old church, and stay right on your way back down to get the best view of the castle.

I visited Krivoklat castle today, and I didn't see where to buy tickets and the last tour runs an hour before the castle closes, which this time of year is 15:00, so last tour was just after I got there. The tour guide said the tour was also over full, there must have been 40 people in that last tour.
Even without the tour of the castle, it was a great trip, the area is a real draw, if you like to visit nature and quiet villages. It seemed like everyone had left for the weekend, which made it even more quaint.
There is a man mixing up hot wine drinks that smell and taste fantastic, definitely worth the ~30 CZK. And there is a little wood shop and glass shop selling trinkets that are nice. If you drive and don't like walking up a hill for about 1km, park at the top of the hill near the gas station and restaurant.
I came in by train, if you do that, check the schedules. I took the train from Praha hl.n. to Baroun and the connecting train was removed from the schedule, so I was in Baroun for an hour waiting for the next train. That lead to my exploring Baroun, which is a nice little town and they were doing some kind of town market in the market square, with booths set up selling wares and foods. There was also live music being performed. I definitely didn't mind spending an hour there.
Similarly the 15:00 train was also removed from the schedule, without notice and I was sitting at the train station for another hour. I could have done without that wait, I should have stayed in the restaurant in town, rather than hurrying to catch a non-existent train. That said the train only cost 200 CZK for the round trip.
The restaurants in town serve local Czech food, and it's done quick and tasty. Served with a nice beer and it's a good place to just relax. Sit on the patio and listen to so much quiet.
Krivoklat isn't a big castle, so have the right expectations when going and you should have a good time for a few hours.

This castle is easy to visit in a day trip from Prague, although is not as easy to get to as Karlstejn. To get to Krivoklat, you take a train to Beroun and then switch trains for Krivoklat. The journey takes about one and a half hours.
We took a guided tour of the castle (the long tour). They did not have any English tours available, so we took a Czech tour with an English booklet. The booklet was informative and included information on the inside of the castle, but did not include any information on the outside of the castle or the tower, which were also part of the tour.
The castle was interesting and we liked that the houses where the people who worked in the castle lived are also preserved in the main courtyard.
The castle is not as nicely preserved as Karlstejn, and if you can only visit one place, I would recommend Karlstejn. However, if you are interested in more gothic architecture and seeing a place that was a royal prison, as well as a prison for others, I would recommend also making a day trip to Krivoklat. If you do not speak Czech, you should do a bit of research about the history of the castle prior to visiting.

This is a great choice for one-day trip from Prague. You can take train or even one of the nostalgic trips by historical train, as we did. These special journeys are joined with markets and concerts and we highly recommend that! The castle itself is located on a top of a mountain, really beautiful. To eat you should choose Hradní Krčma, great food and staff.

We had a private day tour and wanted to see this castle. When we got there (mid-day), there were no more tours in English, so we took a tour in Czech and were given a 3 page handout, in English, that pretty much was what the guide said along the tour. It was very easy to follow as we went. Although I don't remember the young girl's name, our guide was wonderful. At the end of each room/area, she'd come over to the 4 Americans to see if we had any questions about the area, and when she was doing her talk about an area and pointing out something interesting, she'd be sure we knew what she was talking about (in English). After our tour, we sat in the courtyard area of the castle and enjoyed a pilsner from the area. Nice people and beautiful castle. While I liked the Karlstejn Castle, we enjoyed this one a little more. While there weren't a ton of stairs throughout the tour, you definitely need to be able to walk up/down stairs to see this castle.

I recommend visiting this beautiful castle along with Karlstejn castle. Krivoklat is in beautiful place called Krivoklatsko which is naturally protected area. Krivoklat has nice squere where you can often see medieval markets. Tour of the castle is also interesting which including visit ofbild torture chamber. Have a nice trip and visit Krivoklat.

Křivoklát is a very nice old castle. If you are in CZ longer, it is a nice place to visit, but it isn't worth to loose a day there.

Nice castle - exterior better than interior. We were on shorted route (45 min.) Gothic palaces - the interpretation about history was both interesting and funny at the same time. There shot also many fairy tales and films with world famous actors. The chapel is beautiful - to this day it is lit by candles only at ceremonies.

There is not a good vantage point to take a picture of the castle from a distance as there are too many trees in the way. By the time you are cleared of the vegetation, you are quite close to the castle already. No matter, it is still a good shot. There are 3 guided tours to see the interior of the castle, Tour 1 is 45 minutes, Tour 2 is 80 minutes, and Tour 3 is 100 minutes. We took Tour 3. The tour was interesting but I wouldn't qualify it as a must see attraction. The views from the castle walls overlooking the colorful houses down in Krivoklat are quite scenic. The castle wall itself also offers a lot of photo opportunities.

It looks like there is a train that goes from Prague to Krivoklat and takes about 2 hours with 1 stop. But blogs online make it seem like you have to take a train to a bus and then walk. Is the train stop new, or is the train schedule deceiving me?
Written 13 June 2017
To go to Krivoklat, buy the train ticket at Hlavni Nadrazi (Praha hl.n.) in Prague for Krivoklat. You have to switch trains at Beroun. The train from Prague to Beroun takes 40 min. Then in Beroun switch to a local train to go to Krivoklat. The whole journey is about 1 1/2 hours total. There are only 2 morning departures from Beroun to Krivoklat. So you must catch the train from Prague to Beroun at either 9:12 or 11:42 to make the connection at Beroun. After you get off the train at Krivoklat, it is a 10-min. uphill walk to the castle from the train station. For the return journey, the train from Krivoklat to Beroun departs almost hourly in the afternoon at 14:06, 15:20, 16:11, 17:10, 18:58, and 20:54. I visited Krivoklat in May 2017 and you can see my review of Krivoklat in Tripadvisor.

Written 10 August 2016
