    Magical
It was closed when we went. We knew that in advance but it didn't prevent us having a wonderful day adventure from Prague, catching the train out to Karlstejn. A pleasant ride followed by a walk from the station up to the castle was fun and enjoyed by the whole family - kids aged 6 and 13.

    A different sight
A nice little half day excursion outside of Prague. Definitely a hike to the castle on both paved and gravel roads so comfortable shoes and water are necessary. The shops are the same from the bottom of the castle and at the top with trinkets, wine, ice cream, and snacks/drinks.

    Stunning sight
This castle is stupendous . It is also very important historically. We went early ( 9.10am English tour ) before the rain and the crowds arrived only 6 of us on the hour with a very pleasant guide. We took a taxi from the car park and avoided the steep climb. Some people looked very weary on arriving at the castle and they had yet to face the many steep stairs! Of course the woman at the ticket office was totally charmless but I have come to expect that in over popular Czech tourist sites. Another criticism is that most tours only show you a section of the castle but the guide and pictures make it clear you are missing the most sumptuous rooms! Had to be visited though - do arrive early!

Phenomenal! I loved all of it and kids (almost) did toooo!
Fan-freaking-tastic!!! I cannot believe anyone is complaining about this out-of-a-movie experience! We had the guts to bring our 8 yo and 10 year old. Yes the one mile hike is quite the hike but take your time and shop. We did the 50 minute basic tour and it was phenomenal, we had a great guide. My 8 year old son, not surprisingly barely survived but it was us who took that risk. I’m a history nerd and would’ve LOVED to do the second tour for an additional 50 minute but my son wouldn’t have survived that long, haha . The train ride was great too, just a little tricky to ensure you’re getting where you need to go. We needed to feed the family and the Ta even E Europa had a real pizza oven and their garlic bread started was delicious. Childrens play area. Lovely!

An enchanting former home of King Charles 1V of Bohemia
A picturesque castle perched on a hill about 20 miles from Prague but easily reached by train and bus. You catch the train from Prague's main station to Redovice and then a bus to Karlstejn. It is well worth paying for the tour of the castle - two tours available of 1 & 2 hours. The pretty village has a choice of restaurants, cafes and shops which are considerably cheaper than central Prague.

    Impressive Castle Worth a Revisit
Impressive castle in gothic style built in 1365. Saw it many years ago and when I decided to revisit Prague I definitely wanted to se this castle again. It was built to be impossible to conquer and the walls on one side are 7 m thick. (The other walls are "only" 3,5 m thick.) Note: You have to walk the 2 km up to the castle and it goes up-up-up! But it is a beautiful route.

We visited this castle on the last day of our mini-break on Tursday, the 31st March, arriving by train from Prague. The castle looks stunning from the outside so we were really looking forward to seeing the interior and wandering round the castle. We had to wait over half an hour for the English speaking tour guide which is the only way to see the castle. We paid the full tour cost but were disappointed that we could not see all the castle and a lot of the displays were in fact replicas. The tour guide gave us the history of the castle which dates from 1400 but I found it difficult to understand her accent. We did not feel it was worth the amount that we had paid due to the limitations on what we could see. There is some refurbishment work going on and no toilets are available so at the end of our visit we went to use the portaloos provided. They were absolutely DISGUSTING, unusable and needed to be emptied. Fortunately we were able to use the very clean toilets at the station on our return to Prague. All in all this visit was a let down and I would suggest that anyone wanting to visit waits untl all the works are completed and maybe then there will be more to see.

An very old castle, with interesting architecture. It can be reached coming from Prague by S7 train. It’s a 45 minutes trip. From the train station you have to walk about 2km on a road that climbs a slight slope (on the last portion it becomes a bit steeper). The castle can be visited only on a guided tour. There are three variants of guided tour, which practically have no common parts. I don't think it's a good idea, I think it's just a way to get more money from tourists. So, if you want to see everything there is to see, you have to do all the tours. Coupling of the 3 tours would result into a really interesting tour. On two of the tours, is forbidden to take photos. The “Karlštejn Castle Chapels” tour, the longest and the most expensive I think doesn’t worth the money. It’s too long, there is too much time wasted with the detailed description of the biblical scenes painted on the walls. The only really impressive part is the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Besides, as I said, you can’t take any photo in this tour.

If you are visiting Czech Republic and have a little spare time this is an absolute must. Not only is the little village under the castle very charming but the views from various bridges and towers are stunning. The interior of the castle is available for viewing in various tours. I did the basic with representative rooms of the king Carl IV. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and fun so the tour passed very fast.

I'm going to be quite harsh for once, but I'm relatively disappointed by the visit to this castle. The positive points first: Aesthetically its position is very pleasant, its exterior architecture also, its history too and the small village located at the foot with a small stream in the middle; all this makes it a pleasant outdoor visit. For the rest, not much! First, you have to park in the fairly expensive parking lot in the village under penalty of a fine, then you are told in summer the exact location in the sun while there are several possibilities to park in the shade. The climb to the castle is doable on foot without it being fatal at 60 feet (no need for a carriage). Arrival at the castle (reservation recommended in advance for the type of visit and time), it must be said that the type 1 visit (imperial residence) is not a problem. Everything that can be seen in half-empty rooms is a reconstruction, very little from the period. Only visit 2 (more expensive) concerning the chapel merits entry into the guided tour. The main problem is that the tours are either in Czech (sorry, I don't understand it) or in English (OK), but they have a very tight timing. So we did visit 1 and visit 2 back-to-back in English (very good guide but who is a little fussy, well that's detail); the end of 1 corresponding to the beginning of 2, everything should go well, except that 1 ends quite high up in the castle and 2 begins at the bottom; In short, several people (including us) were reprimanded by guides (you are late!!) because we were 2 minutes late for visit 2 (and yet we did not hang around on the way). In short, the timing must be completely reviewed for the sequence of visits in English (the following visit 2 taking place at least 2 hours later, this is not acceptable). Finally, and I agree with other opinions on this subject, when there are 4 of us (2 adults and 2 students), the overall price for the day (parking and 2 options for visiting the castle) is really excessive compared to the satisfaction that comes out. I therefore only recommend the exterior visit and option 2 at most. For a much lower price, Hrad Hluboka (40 to 50 minutes longer journey), south of Prague for example is much more attractive.

We traveled to Karlstejn Castle with our Prague Personal guide, Tereza, with a driver and also visited Ruckl Glassworks factory. We greatly enjoyed being with Terza as an experienced and knowledgeable guide. She knew many things as we drove out to Karlstejn and we made some very fun stops along the way. A great lunch place and a stop for coffee. We learned a lot about life in Czechia and Bohemia. The crystal glass is very beautiful and we bought a small vase with embedded garnets.

We walked up to the castle, which was a fun way to approach it, out of the woods. It is an impressive place. Impregnable. We bought one of the tours and did not quite understand that while we got to see the Golden Room that we did not then get to see some of the other sites in the castle due to time constraints. You pick one tour and you might like to pick both tours. Anyway, the tour guide inside the castle was also very good. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (or Golden Room) was very special. Quite amazing. Very old stuff. And to think that the crown jewels of Europe were stored here at one time is mind-blowing.

Tereza was a very good guide and we had a fun day touring with her and our driver. I cannot recommend highly enough the quality of the Personal Prague guides that we experienced. She took care of us and we got to make many choices with her during the day. We stopped to see the Grand Canyon of Bohemia (Little America) and two nice places to eat. We felt right at home with her that day. The Czechia countryside is gorgeous and it was a good choice to get out of the city for a day trip like this.

Just to make everyone aware that they should check opening days/hours for the castle before visiting, especially if out of season.

We visited on a Wednesday in February to find the town like a ghost town due to the castle being closed.

Plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops with menus and boards outside but not a single one open.

We didn't mind so much as it was a nice day and we had a brisk walk up to the castle gates and back. And it was a nice train ride out of Prague.

But our only source of sustenance was the vending machine in the train station

The staff was very friendly with us. It must be said that the Czechs seem to have a sense of service.

To reach the castle from the station, it takes about 30 minutes to walk. The ride is nice because it allows you to see the castle from several angles. You will walk between different tourist shops.

The castle is very beautiful. We recommend circuit 2 which allows you to go to the magnificent chapel of the Holy Cross.

Guided tours are mandatory due to numerous Flights and damage to former visitors. In addition, some rooms are very sensitive and must be very well preserved.

Tours are available in Czech, English and German. The Guide spoke a bit fast and with a strong Czech accent but her explanations were understandable for those who are a bit comfortable in English.

This castle contains many small wonders and is much more beautiful and interesting than Prague Castle.

We tell you no more so that you can be captivated by the place.

PS: no photos allowed indoors for conservation reasons

Visit is only possible by tour. you have to choose one of three - seeing everything is not possible at ones. The probably most interesting tour to the chapel lasts 100 minutes, accordingly we decided to go for the basic tour with our small children which is supposed to be 50min. There is not a lot to see, most of the few furnitures and paintings are replicas from later epoches. Our children behaved very well and where only wispering from time to time. Mostly because we had to translate to them (They speak only Slovak and German). In the last room the guide asked kind of unfriendly for them to stop wispering, while she was explaining endless family tree monologs.

We stayed with friends . in wonderful autumn weather, in Prague. From there we went on a trip to Karlstein Castle. The beautiful castle is located on a hill and is easily accessible from the parking lot with a 20 minute walk. The outdoor facilities are impressive and we were already looking forward to the tour of the castle. Then came the great shock, the annoyance and also disappointment. It is indeed the case that one is to be ripped off at the cash register as a foreign guest. With double the entrance fee compared to domestic guests, we consider this an absolute “ no go ” !!! We gave up the tour !!
