Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fantastic wee museum for a little NZ town. Loved the two interactive engines, displays and all the information. Bluff is a fascinating little town and this museum shares its history proudly. Stop by for an hour and enjoy!

This is a hidden gem as it tells the history of the area through a maritime perspective. Shipping played a major part in the development of this part of NZ and Bluff had/has a central roll. To read the stories of the early indigenous people and later the settlers was very interesting. The volunteers have done a wonderful job in bringing this together as there is something for everyone. Lots of interactive things for children to do including going 'aboard' the lobster boat in the yard. Plenty of parking and a very inexpensive ($3.00) entry. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Had the promise of being s very interesting place, but, if you cannot get in to have a look, it turn into a waste of time and mileage.

Very nice staff, helpful and knowledgeable. Cheap at 3dollars entry. A bit chaotic and dated. Interesting but due to lack of visual structure it is hard to see forest for the trees

An interesting place to learn a little about shipping and its connection to history in the Bluff area. A museum like this will never have funding to be fancy like a modern museum, but the staff are doing a solid job at providing displays and items which are unique to the local history. For a few gold coins change you can spend a little time learning something new.

Arrived at 3.30 paid the entry fee (it is scheduled to close at 4.30 according to the sign outside) Asked the old lady staff member where the toilets are she got really annoyed, When I had been to the toilet she said we had to leave at 3.50 she was closing because she wanted to go shopping! SOOO RUDE The museum it would have been nice to have more time than 15 minutes to look

If your staying in Invercargill a visit to the bluff museum (22kms away) is worth the effort. The displays are good and the price reasonable.
The only downside is the grumpy woman on the counter who, because we arrived at 3.30 (it is scheduled to close at 4.30 according to the sign outside) got the huffs and told us we had to leave at 3.50, because she wanted to go shopping!..unbelievable.

The Bluff Maritime Museum is an interesting place for a short stop while in Bluff. It has a mix of local displays relating to Bluff maritime history, oyster fishing, ship wrecks, the navy frigate HMNZS Southland and other things. There is an old oyster boat dating outside which you can explore as well.

Cheap admission to view a very varied collection. While not interested in boats at all, I found the social history and details of the whalers, sealers and mutton birders very interesting. Very noisy children shortened our stay but I am sure you could easily spend over an hour here.
