We were truly impressed with the memorial at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. Much larger and developed than what we found at Utah Beach. We visited on D-Day itself (2023) and watched a concert of musical groups from the United States perform and heard from a veteran who had served in the war on D-Day (age 98 now). These hallowed grounds are beautiful and worth a visit. Free toilets/bathrooms.

Impressive site which honors those who died for our freedom. We had a private tour by Guillaume, who is a very passionate and understands how to translate personal stories of survivors into the why there is this cemetery based on the historical events. His knowledge is profound and thorough, mixed with a passion for “lest we not forget”. I sure won’t forget this tour!

Beautiful, serene memorial honoring American troops who died in Europe during World War II. The site covers 172.5 acres overlooking the Normandy coast and is the final resting place of 9,387 American heroes. There is also a Wall of the Missing dedicated to 1,557 service members declared missing in action. Opened in 1956. The focal point is an inspiring 22-ft bronze statue of "Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves."

I went here after visiting the museum just off the main road. Didn't realise just how close it is to the cliffs. Large car park and lots of Gendarmes around searching bags as you enter. Beautifully laid out and everything well cared for. Really well maintained with people cutting the grass and workers cleaning the headstones. Just walking round, you don't realise how many people died here, must have been thousands. There is a large monument in the middle with all the battle details setting out where the landings took place and the battles thereafter into Germany. There were coach loads of American tourists there. After this I got into my car and drive down the hill, and suddenly I was on Omaha beach. You can see that it must have been a blood bath with thousands killed and bodies floating in the ocean.
Really poignant and not to be missed

Having had so many in our family serve in the military, I was really excited to visit this location. The museum at the cemetery was very informative and provided a lot of the background on the military strategy. But, the most impactful aspect of the museum was the individual plaques that provided insight to many of those that died at Normandy. You cannot walk through the headstones in the cemetery but there is a pathway and several places to sit and reflect.

This is not to be missed. I don't think any American can visit and not be moved, if not overwhelmed, by the sight of these graves. The young men sacrificed their lives for us and this memorial honors them in such a respectful way. The cemetery is located right above Omaha Beach.
Try to go late in the day. An hour before closing flags are lowered and taps are played.

Over 9000 graves here at the American cemetery which overlooks Omaha Beach.
There is a small museum before you go in which explains the events of DDay at the beach.
We were here a couple of days before DDay so there were American war planes flying overhead which added to the experience

Some of the sacred ground one can visit. It's a beautiful of the ocean on one side, and a sobering reminder of the cost of that view on other side. An essential stop. The visitor center recently reopened as Covid has deeply affected access and hours for a long time now. Free parking on site, bathrooms, and easily handicap/stroller accessible. The visitor center has an outstanding amount of information and lots to take in. Plan accordingly as you should take your time to take in the exhibit and then walk the cemetery before walking down to Omaha Beach itself, where so many fell.
Respect is paramount here, so it's best to instruct children accordingly. Don't be the ugly foreign tourist with the loud voice and annoying commentary. This is a cemetery, not a theme park.

The visitor centre is packed with respectful memories of such a sad time. I took my time to read everything in there and try to image what it was like to be involved. It was a very emotion inducing visit that I’m so glad to have made.
Once outside you can reflect on the past as you explore the pristinely maintained cemetery in peace and quiet. Our visit was out of season so it was quiet, but I can imagine it gets jammed in the summer.
A beautiful but sad place to visit, but essential to maintain the memory of those who lost their lives all of those years ago.

I had the pleasure of visiting this site on 6th June 2018 on what was the 74th anniversary of D Day.
During a tour with an English speaking guide (Anthony Lewis) we learned so much. One of his main points was that the Cemetery would not look as good as it does were it not for the work of the 20 gardeners employed there. So true.
If you do visit my advice is try & catch one of the organised tours.
Hopefully i will return.

Crosses are marble - as well as Jewish Star of David. Really gorgeous - especially as you view from various angles and they form a V for Victory. They all face the United States. The cemetery is a very moving experience.

Hello~
We are seriously considering a visit to the D-Day beaches this summer. Are there tours already established that we may simply join?
Blessings~

We took a guided tour - and then spent time on our own. Check the internet for various tours of the beaches as well as the cemetery.

We plan on flying into Amsterdam and driving to my grandfather's grave in Normandy for the 75th Anniversary. How long is the trip by car?
Written 30 January 2019
Long drive but worth it. It took us 7-8 hours. We barely made it to the cemetery in time and only were able to spend about 30-45 minutes there but it was still worth it. I will go back.

Cultural differences, decided by architects. Allied cemeteries are more like gardens. German cemeteries blend in with their environment. Plants grow freely and trees are not pollarded, according to German mythology's concept of communion between Man and Nature The architecture of these cemeteries is austere but leaves a lot of room for trees to "watch over the eternal rest of the soldiers". The cemeteries often give the impression of being in a forest. It is not true that the Treaty of Versailles obliged the Germans to be buried with black crosses as symbols of the vanquished. There is no such clause. There are many cases of WW2 German soldiers buried in Allied cemeteries, with white headstones (viz. Cemetery near Pegasus Bridge).

We are looking for a one day trip to Normandy (from Paris) re: WWII D-Day landings, etc. Found link paris dot xxx which provides a tour via rail from Paris (which we like) but cannot seem to locate any recent reviews. Any help would be appreciated.

Paris is quite a distance from Normandy - I would suggest spending time in Normandy at least a full day or two in Normandy - there is so much history.

We are traveling to Paris in May. What's the best way to get there from Paris?
Written 27 February 2018
I think a rental car will be the best way to see the area. It is also a lot of organized trips (coaches). I had my own compact campervan which was a fine way to travel.
