Like others, we thought the chateau was something it is not. The restored chateau houses a collection of “unusual” (at least to my taste) modern art. There was very little information provided on the history of the building or the town. It was also 11 euro per adult to get in. I would not go back.

I knew the castle of Montsoreau that through Alexandre Dumas, I was eager to visit it.
Big disappointment, the castle is not well presented, there is very little explanation about the castle itself, and what little there is is not very attractive, with the ticket, we are sold a museum of contemporary art. I’m not a specialist, but what’s on display has puzzled me, I really haven’t hung up.
I would have better to discover the castle from the outside and walk in the pretty village of Montsoreau, instead of spending 11 € for a visit that left me hungry ...

We wanted a bit of a change from visiting the classic historic castles. We said to ourselves that a modern art museum in a castle was a good option. The places around the castle and the castle itself are very pretty. I think it is one of the most beautiful castles I have seen. Its particularity is to be the only castle to have been built near or on the Loire (from what I have read). But inside there is depression: 2/3 works of modern art which are not of much interest are fighting a duel. However, it would be the largest collection of the art and language movement. It’s a total failure. If I were them, I would group the works on one or two floors no more. I would also ask other museums for loans of works and otherwise I would ask modern art artists in the region (like in the Château de Rivaud) to put on temporary exhibitions. Too bad because this castle has great potential (a beautiful courtyard with terrace where a café, a bar or a restaurant could be set up with concert film events, concerts, parties, exhibitions could be organized. Instead of that everything is empty and smells old. Or else we have to transform this castle into a hotel given the setting.

For the price it's a scam
Contemporary art....a pile of coal in one room, boxes in another, contemporary works...and so on
Frankly, what a waste, this castle was so beautiful about fifteen years ago
Fortunately there is the village
You should definitely not visit this castle anymore

This castle, magnificent from the outside, disappoints for the visit. No interest. Unless you like contemporary art... which, during our visit, was not to die for...
What a shame not to highlight such a pretty castle more....
This is my 2nd visit. The first one dating back more than 10 years did not leave me with a transcendent memory but there was at least some animation throughout the castle which made the visit more lively... today nothing more... the great emptiness. ...

The castle is beautiful on the outside. Inside, you lose a lot by being many whitewashed walls. What completely detracts from it is the exhibition of “art”, but without valuing the works, it is that most are photos printed on a folio, stuck with tacks to the wall (it will be part of the work and it escapes me). Our favorite work proposal has been the room with the air conditioning.
It's not even worth what's been paid.

To see from the outside, it's enough... And the price is a little expensive for the view from the terrace. It's better to spend time in the town...
By bike, be careful of the climb, I arrived half out of order :-[]
As for the contemporary art exhibition... I don't even know what to say about it :-O

Its not hard to succumb to the charms of this village as you gaze over the majestic river that bestows such irresistible charm and softness on this little town. The centrepiece, is the impressive chateau which displays an elegant facade inspired by Italian Renaissance.
In the mornings a mist rises from the Loire which envelops the watcher with gossamers of gold shafts and a harmony of soft hues. The village is fortunate in quarrying the white Tuffeau from which both the chateau and village houses are built from..
Fabulous mushrooms are sold at the Sunday food market, a great offshoot to the important tourist attraction of 21 Troglodyte dwellings, which are owner occupied by villagers and enjoy the modern trappings to create very cosy digs.
The village is a delightful place, on the banks of the river, nestled in the heart of the nature reserve. Aside from its church of Saint-Pierre-de-Rest and its splendid panorama , Montsoreau is also known for its competitions of boule de fort, a ball game invented in the 17th-Century by Spanish prisoners. Governed by strict protocol and lots of gentle humour, the game is played in a convivial spirit typical of the village.

I have visited this chateau numerous times in the past and enjoyed its depiction of the history of the Loire river - geology, history, commerce, etc. Reproductions of the old boats, music, even the fashion diorama were wonderful and very informative.
Now, all that has been stripped out and replaced with a schlock art exhibition - absolutely horrible! There has always been space for artwork displays - in the building across the courtyard from the chateau. Why wasn’t this done here?
The only thing left is the great view from the roof. But, wait a while until wiser heads redecorate. Don’t support this travesty with your 9.5 euros.

The village of Montsoreau is one of the 150 or so “Most Beautiful Villages of France” and the castle is of course considered to be one of its highlights. It sits in a commanding position on the banks of the wide Loire river, and the views from the top of the castle are exceptional.
The castle is bare inside: no furniture, no armoury, no draperies etc..., so a permanent exhibition has been set up throughout the rooms. Sadly it is about contemporary “Art & Language” and is unlikely to wow a majority of the visitors. I personally thought it was awful. The only plus point is that there is a lot of English translation for Anglophone visitors. Entrance fee is just short of €10 per adult.
