We saw elephants quite close and had one charge us twice, though our driver and tracker acted adequately to get us out without any harm. Lots of birds on view.

The key is picking the right guide. I think it's a bit of luck I'm afraid. We got lucky I guess. If you can't take the risk best to do the cheapest way - that way the sting wouldn't be so bad.

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Hi JS F and other posters, thanks for your review. My husband and I are planning a visit to Sri Lanka in December, and I was wondering if all the animals are 'around' during that time of year. We previously did a tiger safari in India also in December and found that the tigers are mostly 'hibernating' for the winter and are even more elusive then. I'm wondering whether it's worth making the trip to Udawalawe in December. Did you have any trouble seeing leopards? Also, how many safaris would you recommend to do? Would it be worthwhile to do one morning & one evening visit?

Sorry, I have no idea. What I can tell you is that to get the best experience of Udawalah you want to be at the Elephant reserve by 0530.
