If you are visiting Yueyang, this is a must visit attraction. The Pavilion is one of 3 famous towers in Jiang Nan province. Comparing to Yellow Crane Tower at Wuhan which I had been, this tower is not as impressive. Nevertheless the tower impresses with finest traditional Chinese architecture. Inside the compound also displays scaled models of past towers that were destroyed during the reign of ancient dynasty. Nice to roam around to enjoy the lake view at the rear of the tower. Nearby to the attraction is a food street offering lots of local snacks and eateries. You can go to a public piazza nearby to view an enormous aquatic sculpture.

A very old attraction worth seeing if your in Yueyang. A quite and peaceful place, set on the banks of Dongting Lake you can explore the old buildings and water structures and take in some real Chinese history. Climb the stairs to the top in the large Yueyang Tower, at the far end of the site, to get a good view of the lake and surrounding area (even better if its a clear day)

Just passing through, heading north, although we did walk the sites. January is not the best time of year, but it what you make of it. Don’t pass it up, worth a visit.

Yueyang Lo is a must for tourists to Yueyang but the entrance fee of RMB 80 per person is bit expensive since there is no additional ancient relics or structure to see inside the compound . There is no English comment available in the tower. Outside the compound , there is a walled like fortress structure and gates which look impressive .

I visited this beautiful area this time last year, on a sunny day with blue sky. Yes it really was blue.
There is a car park with a tourist alley one side for all your souvenirs and somewhere to eat. Good food, and no hard sell for once. I enjoyed myself.
Then for a modest fee on the other side of the car park, we went through to look at the tower, which includes many attractions.
There are brass models of the earlier versions of the tower, a house, with displays about the tower and its supporters over the centuries.
Many inscriptions in stone for those interested in Chinese calligraphy, and more.
A small building where the women used to sit during the day and do their needlecraft. Now you can buy examples of what they used to make.
Then climb the tower for breathtaking views of Dongting Lake. Its not that the tower is tall, but the view itself.
There's also a small buddhist temple below the tower if you're that way inclined.

After its military service, poets wrote about this tower. In the Tang Dynasty, Du Fu climbed the tower while ill and subsequently wrote, "I heard of Dongting Lake before, and now I ascend Yueyang Tower"

Adjacent to Dongting Lake, this pavilion is worth checking out, as is Bianhe Street directly beside it. There is lots of local food and shops to explore including tea stores and clothing stores. It looks like there was a stage where there is live entertainment, perhaps in the evening. We enjoyed strolling through and seeing the local culture.

This is a very beautiful ancient, traditional Chinese architecture, three-storey pavilion. It is located in the very nice Chinese garden Yueyang Tower Park, and on the shores of Dongting Lake. It is considered to be one of Chinese four nicest pavilions. It is a rectangular building, with its highest point being 15 metres above ground level. The roof lines are similar to many ancient Chinese buildings and have a curved shape similar to those worn by ancient Chinese warriors.
The pavilion is believed to have been built in the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280 AD). After being damaged in wars, it was rebuilt by the Song Dynasty (960-1127).
Admission fee is 80 rmb.

No rivets or nails were used in the construction of Yueyang Tower, which is a complete wood structure, simple and unique. In the middle of the tower, four nanmu pillars run all the way to the roof, with twelve round-timber pillars propping up the second storey and another twelve Chinese catalpa wood pillars supporting the upturned eaves, thus ingeniously forming a whole. The pinnacle of the tower is like a helmet worn by an ancient general. The structure of the tower is unique in the architectural history of ancient China, holding unparalleled artistic values.
Twelve red sandal wood tablets inscribed with the calligraphy work of On Yueyang Tower by calligrapher Zhang Zhao of the Qing Dynasty are hanging on the main wall of the tower hall. All four walls are occupied by couplets written by celebrated masters. Around Yueyang Tower, there stand Erchun (meaning "intoxicating") Pavilion and Xianmei (meaning "divine plum") Pavilion, both of which are related to folk legends.

How long should I allow for this attraction. We are on the Viking River Cruise and some where along the Yangtze River. What means of transportation would be the best way to arrive there? Thanks in advance.
