Although we were promised an English-speaking guide, ours spoke Portuguese only. Thankfully my granddaughter was able to translate the details to add to my minimal understanding. Lots of focus on the later developments with the support from Portugal, but I was disappointed that the roles...More

I came here only because I wanted to visit Lençóis Marenhenses. I read online Sao luiz could be a place to visit in its own right. Personally I wouldn’t really agree. I wouldn’t have made the trip if I hadn’t been coming to see something...More

São Luís historic district is one of the most beautiful among northeastern capitals, having undergone a consistent restoration effort for the last decade or so. Although relatively modest in comparison to other old cities like Salvador and Recife, the several churches and the many "sobrados"...More

I spent three days in São Luís last year and it was great to see the world heritage listed historic centre and its colonial buildings. Great food, warm people, nice beaches, just regret not having time to go to Lençóis maranhenses.

There are a lot of negative reviews of Sao Luis' historical center around and while it is indeed correct that much work still needs to be done, Sao Luis is terrifically atmospheric with a great live music scene. We have been all-over Brazil and would...More

I spent a couple of hours wandering around the historic centre of San Luis. It's worth making a day or afternoon stop in Soa Luis on your way to or from lençóis. Lot's of old tiled buildings to see, many in disrepair but this adds...More

As a brazilian citizen I feel obliged to loathe brazilian authorities who let one of the most beautiful architectural complexes in southern hemisphere run down in such a sad way. The buildings are gorgeous but the surroundings are threatening and the tourist doesn’t get a...More

This is a well preserved section where you find the old buildings with decorative tiles from the Portuguese time of Brazil colony. Walk around and visit the Cathedral.

We visited this World UNESCO heritage site and thoroughly enjoyed wandering through the town and the shops. The history of this area is fascinating and is worth the visit.
