Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Some really cool buildings, especially with the azulejos. Much has been repaired and restored; much has not. Beautiful buildings sit beside crumbling wrecks, or construction sites. Safe, gritty. Good for walking around.

The historical center of São Luis has deteriorated a lot in the past 5 years. Be careful if you are carrying bags and electronic equipment. Contract a local guide.

As a brazilian citizen I feel obliged to loathe brazilian authorities who let one of the most beautiful architectural complexes in southern hemisphere run down in such a sad way. The buildings are gorgeous but the surroundings are threatening and the tourist doesn’t get a good feel. If you are not experienced with Brazilian cities, don’t waste your time.

Disappointing, decrepit, dirty & with several museums either closed or not fully functioning. If you visit I recommend you stay in the beach-fronting new town - better, cleaner, modern accomodation, proper (some v good) restaurants. Visit the old town by day (1/2 day is more than enough) & do the trip to Alcantara (but beware choppy, windy, sea-sickening crossings Aug>Nov🤢)
If you want to see historic Brasil, visit old towns in Mina's Gérais or Paraty (Rio Sate)
Former fief of the presidential Sarney family, it is disappointing that their vast wealth was not even minimally reinvested in restoring the old town.

this historic center is nice but unfortunately not so well manteined... if you want to visit museums too i suggest to spend not more than one full day. "Museu historico e artistico do estado de Maranhao" is nice and they have an original Picasso.

If you like colonial streets in an advanced state of decay and abandonment then this is the place for you. Great for photos! But quite surprising how many of the buildings are just abandoned shells. Huge potential for development of this city, it could be another Cartagena

The historic center of the capital of the Brazilian State of Maranhão is known as “Reviver” or “Projeto Reviver”, presumably because of the attempted renaissance of the neighborhood, which is still underway.
The neighborhood has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, because it maintains much of the buildings from the Portuguese era.
I found it very charming both day and night. I used the day to run around & take photos, go to the market, visit the tourist sites in the neighborhood & buy souvenirs. All of this can be done while walking around.
The Governor’s mansion is open to the public & they offer a guided tour that takes about 30 minutes (it’s very pretty inside & out). The Cathedral of São Luis (aka the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory, aka Igreja da Sé) has a beautiful gilded altarpiece that dates back to the end of the 17th Century.
I came back in the evening & ate a a wonderful pizzeria (La Pizzeria was the name) and the area seemed lively. While I’ve heard that it’s seedy, I didn’t find it to be any worse than any other city in Brazil.

I did not like the place, although, for those who are hungry and like good music with lot of people around, it is a good place to stay and know the local food. Positive point: good policing there.

Lovely old historic centre in dire need of some TLC. Old squares, decorations, music all put on by the municipality shows that they’re trying but many dilapidated buildings and homeless people asking for handouts don’t let you forget where you are. That said, food & drink is inexpensive and local folks quite friendly.

Sunday market in the main square by the cathedral definitely a highlight with local food, drink and handicrafts accompanied by a local capoeira group doing their thing made it a memorable experience.
