Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really nice and educative and the children ages 13&10 enjoyed it however the 4 year old found it so boring.

Great day out and guide was fantastic as well

A visit to the Akosombo hydropower plant is an education. Our guide was quite good and she made a good impression on our party of seven. The simple but intricate process of harvesting water from the Volta Lake and purifying it was exciting to see. The infrastructure looks massive but well maintained. Anyone afraid of heights shouldn't go near the edges at the very top. I salute the foresight of the Kwame Nkrumah government in constructing such a great project.

This construction is one of Ghana's major engineering successes and also a wonderful example of creating energy by the use of natural means.

The low speed high capacity water turbines drive massive generators deep within the heart of the dam which incidentally provide the majority of the country's electrical power.

If you are as fortunate enough as I was to be escorted within this wonderful example of civil engineering development, you will experience the awesome power beneath your feet as you stand above these great slowly revolving machines in the very core of the dam. Try to imagine the immense power of the water that is driving them just feet through the concrete at your side!

When you come out again from the very bowels of this structure and see the exhausted water form these turbines being thrust into the lake beneath you really do begin to appreciate magnitude of this project.

A truly wonderful and awe inspiring experience I can assure you.

It's better to book the ⛵ at Sajuna if you're only there for a cruise as their prices are cheaper. If there are other things like having fun and you're willing to pay extra then royal senchi.
There's less fun if you're alone but if it's a group then good for you. Perfect place for couple 💑

The most southern Lake Volta region: Apokaime, Atimpoku and Akosombo. Apokaime and Atimpoku for the natural beauty of the river Volta, plenty of water acivities especially in Atimpoku. Akosombo for the dam responsible for creating one of largest artificial lakes in the world.

We visited only the dam and were not able to enter the Hydro plant. Be aware that tickets and have to be purchased at an office in town about 3 km for the entrance. The tour start at this office. You can enter the dam area with your own vehicle and guide. Or hire a car at reasonable fare and guide at the office. Taxis are not allowed to enter the dam area. I liked the tour and I recommend it, also if enginering is not your favourite subject.

Might sound weird, but in one way this was almost the highlight of going to Ghana for me, I'm a bit of a sad geek to be perfectly honest, so all the techy stuff fascinates me.

We had a brilliant guide, really enthusiastic and committed, and she explained how it all worked in a way that everybody could understand.

The way that it was built, with all the engineering challenges, as well as the social impacts of relocating people in the valley behind the dam which was to be flooded were all explained, as well as the challenges that climate change has brought in terms of water level reduction making it difficult forthis station to provide power for Ghana as well as neighboring Togo and Burkino Faso.

It's a fair way away from Accra, but well worth the trip, as it's a key piece of keeping the country running.

It's also a very cheap tour, and doesn't charge a 500% mark-up for non-Ghanaian citizens, unlike a number of other places we visited there.

Lastly, there are some fantastic views to be had, across the resovoir, and south down the Volta river valley.

Definitely worth a visit..

The hydro plant is quite impressive and what a look when you are in Akosombo. The area is picturesque and the dam and the lake, which is the largest man made lake by surface area is beautiful, especially if you get to enjoy a cruise on it.

This tour was for the benefit of my sister, as I have been there before. The best thing about this tour is the fee. So very reasonable to visit. The weather was perfect and I believe the guide did his best to tell us everything. My suggestion for this one is for the VRA managers. It is highly unacceptable for you to ask the customer/tourist to go to a different building and pay the cashier. This is not convenient for any tourist to do. You must have national service persons to do that. I was wondering why would a young lady working in the VRA office ask a visitor to the Dam to go to a separate building to pay on foot. This needs to be changed immediately.

It's by all means worth a visit, it's interesting and the view is beautiful and peaceful. Keep in mind that Lake Volta is the largest lake made by men in the whole world. Combine the visit with 2-3 days at Aylos Bay(my favourite) nearby Atimpoku, just south of the lake.
