    Small but nice
Apparently Ludwig II of Bavaria's favorite castle. We liked it the best of all his castles - small but beautiful! The signage from the parking lot to the castle could be better. Here too, I bought the tickets online, but it wasn't necessary as the ticket office is directly on the way to the entrance. Very beautiful park!

    What gold!
Paid parking 3€. Then a short walk of around 5 minutes. On arrival, a small disappointment, the castle/palace is in fact a large hunting lodge with a fairly sober appearance with beautiful gardens on all 4 sides. Guided tour at the appointed time, impossible to take one earlier or there weren't many people. We provide you with small booklets in your language if necessary, the invention of the audio guide having not yet arrived that far. But inside there are few rooms, not very large, but what a riot of gold that it becomes flashy. A must-have.

Lovely Palace near Munich on Our Tour
This was the last great palace on our 11 day tour of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Quite a walk up to the entrance. Once inside you can not take pictures but loved the atmosphere and history. The king that built it never lived in it but the guide told us quite a lot about his life and family. The wall of Beauty displaying all the ladies who were considered as potential for the kings next queen was an interesting way to select a wife. Loved the king’s bedroom where he had 3 tiers of waiting areas for people who wanted audience with him. Outside the castle are beautiful gardens and fountains. Supposed to be modeled like Versailles in France. This is one place you don’t want to miss if in the area. However keep in mind there are a lot of stairs inside which may be difficult for some people with handicaps.

Fabulous palace and gardens - highly recommend
Excellent value for money visiting gorgeous grounds and historic palace. We preferred this to the better known Neuschwanstein castle and associated second palace and museum ( although that is still very worthy of a visit). We booked on line for an English language tour and had that plus access to the beautiful gardens and multiple surrounding “kiosks” and hunting lodge. All for €10 each plus €3 for parking. The Neuschwanstein complex was €50 each plus €12 for parking. You hear the same interesting history of King Ludwig II in both places If you are on a budget the gardens alone are easily accessible for pushchairs/ wheelchair users for just the price of the parking. The fountain goes off every 30 mins and is lovely to see. Food outlets were limited on the day we visited ( a Saturday in June!) but there are several bars/ restaurants/ cafes in the nearby village of Ettal - where there is a spectacular baroque abbey to visit ( for free) We didn’t have time but walking and cycling opportunities along the valley from Ettal to the Schloss looked lovely. An area well worth visiting

Guided tour of a small baroque palace
We visited Linderhof Palace on a day trip from Munich so our time at the palace was limited. This is a hunting lodge which Ludwig II converted to a baroque palace. It was raining hard when we visited so we did not explore the gardens. The palace is visited by timed guided tour, and you need to be at the entry point with your ticket to access the palace at your time. You are then taken round the palace by a guide who will explain (in English in our case) the details of the palace and point out the interesting features. The palace is relatively small, so the tour only lasts about 30 minutes, but you are not rushed round, and our group was of a size that allowed everyone to see the features pointed out comfortably.

Probably our most favorite palace to visit during our trip to Bavaria
Our group was surprised at how much we enjoyed our visit here. Parking was 3 euros (cash only, I think). No advance reservations needed for tickets; once you arrive at the ticket office next to the parking area, you will be assigned to the next tour (English speaking, if you want). It's about a 10-minute walk from the parking area/ticket office to the palace itself, and so they gave us a tour time that was about 20 minutes in the future, which was perfect. The tour lasted about 25 minutes and was very good. The palace is "small," and so the tour involves only 1 floor with about 9 rooms, but the decorations were fantastic, and the guide was very good. After the tour, we explored the grounds for about 40 minutes, and they were very luxurious (although not huge). (It is not possible to view the palace without a tour, but you can explore the grounds for free if you don't want to visit the palace.) There is a kiosk with drinks and food next to the parking area and ticket office. The grounds include beautiful flowers and landscaping, and there is a Moroccan house on the grounds that you can view for free that is pretty cool. We spent almost 2 hours here and really enjoyed it.

Palatial estate in a beautiful setting
We stopped for a quick visit on our drive from Fuson back to Munich. It was late in the afternoon, so the palace had already closed and we were unable to tour the inside. However, we were able to spend about 30 minutes, walking around the outside and exploring the grounds, which were very impressive. It is a very palatial estate. That looks very different than other castles in the area. From the parking lot, it’s an easy 5 to 10 minute walk to the palace. The setting is beautiful, and the grounds are meticulously covered with gardens, fountains and walkways. Definitely worth visiting.

    Beautiful gardens!
Absolutely beautiful gardens surrounding Linderhof. With so many castles in Germany and Austria there is just simply too many to see. Not to mention, pricey if you're buying entrance into each one. For Linderhof, I recommend just paying for parking (if you drive) and walk around the garden and grounds, which is free. Save your money if you're on a budget to go inside Neuschwanstein, unless of course you're a history enthusiast. Linderhof is easy to stop over after a few fun hours at Oberammergau Alpine Coaster. Bring your good camera!

    Just fairytale!
Beautiful, fairytale setting. Castle itself not done, was not convenient with dog and toddler. We enjoyed ourselves with the buildings on the site and its surroundings. It was quieter than expected. Nice that the dog was welcome and that the large fountain was just out of restoration. Keep in mind that (certainly more towards the Hundinghütte) the terrain is still quite hilly.

    Lovely.
Very nice, inside is tiny, but outside is beautiful, the gardens, the fountain. I do not give it five stars because the guided tour from our point of view should improve it, they do it speaking in German or English, we being Spanish gave us a folder with photos and explanations for you to read, that some rooms are dark, do not offer audio Guide. The rooms are small, because the palace itself is tiny and the groups with many people, we crowded the rooms. Inside they won't let you take pictures.

It's a pearl. Small but very rich, the park is wonderful and allows you to visit it all without effort. Surrounded by greenery. the visit to the park is free, that of the castle is paid and only with a guide. We had booked the tour in English via the internet but we discovered that sometimes there are also guides in Italian and they are only available if you buy a ticket on site. We were very lucky because we and the many Italians who had booked for the same time were given the opportunity to join the group with an Italian guide who left shortly after ours. The guide was very nice and allowed us to immerse ourselves in the life of the castle and Ludovico. Absolutely worth visiting. On the occasion of Ludovico's birthday, every year they do special night tours but unfortunately we discovered this too late.

The castle is certainly worth a visit as it is very different from the others in Bavaria.
The garden, quite small, is very pleasant, but the interior of the castle is sumptuous!
It's a shame that it can only be visited on a guided tour, carried out at a leisurely pace (30 minutes), which does not allow you to enjoy the places as long as you have been focused on listening to the guide or reading the brochure which gives us is provided in French
No photos allowed in the castle

If you are in Bavaria it is very much worth a visit, the rooms are sumptuous and well kept and the garden is also very beautiful (it's a shame that in winter with snow many paths are closed and the statues covered in cellophane). You can only book via a guided tour which is offered in multiple languages: which is a German guide who plays an mp3 in Italian, but that's fine too!
The castle can only be reached by car and is on the outskirts of the mountain village Ettal, where it is nice to stop for lunch.

My husband and I made a 12 day trip to Bavaria in August, ‘23. As part of our trip, we spent 2 nights in Schwangau and dedicated one day as “castle day”.

We opted to tour Hochenschwangau in the morning, then made the hike up to Neuschwanstein (but without the tour of the interior of Neuschwanstein as I had already toured it twice before, there was notification that a couple of areas were closed for tour this summer and the interior of Neuschwanstein was never finished and the tour is fairly abbreviated anyway).

After the hike, we stopped at the Biergarten mid mountain for a late lunch and beer.

We then drove to Linderhof Palace as I had never been there. The drive took about 45 minutes from Neuschwanstein /Hochenschwangau and went past a lake busy with summer vacationers. Our tour of Linderhof was late in the afternoon. It was very warm inside the palace and because Linderhof is much smaller than the other castles, the tour was fairly short. No photos allowed in the palace, as is the case with the other castles. The design of the gardens surrounding the palace is pretty, but we thought the plantings themselves were lacking a bit.

If you are in the area of Linderhof Palace, it is certainly worth a visit, but I don’t think it’s worth the drive from the Neuschwanstein/ Hochenschwangau area. In retrospect, I would have rather spent the time exploring downtown Fussen.

The castle itself was beautiful, with thousands of little details on the walls and ceiling, and the Mirror room is absolutely stunning.

Sadly we could not see anything properly because we were rather rudely rushed from room to room with barely a minute stop.

The tour was advertised as 25 mins but ours was over in 15. We were a big and crowded group even though the time slots before and after us were almost empty.

The guide's English was not very good, she spoke quietly and fast so I did not understand much. The only thing I understood clearly was the "no photos" rule and threats repeated in every room that we will be kicked out if we try to make a photo.

So, the visit was kind of waste of money. Did not see much, couldn't hear anything, was not allowed to take a photo. I had much more pleasure watching videos of the castle online.

If you are in the area ( Füssen, Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Schwangau) add this beautiful palace to your itinerary

You approach down a long driveway, park, then walk to a ticket office and cafe area. You can book ahead, but we had no problems getting tickets on the day. We were easily booked into an English tour, I would say if you want a specific tour book ahead, otherwise take your chance. Cost was €10 to get in ( €9 seniors) which we felt was good value.

The walk is then 15-20 minutes to the palace, an easy, relatively flat walk. Allow plenty of time, you get about a 5 minute window to get in with your tour group, they do not let you in early or late. If you are early explore the beautiful gardens.

Once inside there are stairs up to the main floor, not too steep. We were lucky to have a tour with a live guide, the wonderful Aurellia, whose presentation really enhanced the experience. The tour is of the 10 rooms of the main floor, and her explanations and little extras really added to our experience. The palace was the residence of Ludwig II of Bavaria, extravagantly built and furnished and it was so interesting to see and have pointed out to us the various influences that were present. The palace was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and there are lots of nods to that era, including the extravagance. The wall paintings and murals are well done, and the tour explains the themes and inspirations well.

Once finished the gardens are lovely, and there is the inevitable souvenir shop. Best value there is a small booklet (€3) with pictures and some text, about the palace. You are not allowed to take pictures inside the palace so this is a great reminder at a relatively small cost.

There is a small cafe near the ticket office, with a reasonable amount of beverages and a few pastries. The staff there were very nice.

In summary, this is a good option in this area for a half day visit, interesting building, and nice gardens. I would probably stop by again for a visit if ever in the area.

Schloss Linderhof is small but intricately beautiful. We visited as part of a greater Bavarian castle day trip and thought Linderhof was just as impressive as Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein has a beautiful exterior but at Linderhof it is 100% worth paying for the interior tour. It's quite mind blowing. In particular the kings bed! Very happy we included this on our itinerary.

We have already been to Linderhof Castle and wanted to visit this beautiful castle again with our friends.
We booked tickets with a guided tour online and drove there a little earlier because of our long journey.
We expected that we would be able to have a bite to eat and a coffee in the restaurant.
It was pouring with rain, the restaurant was closed, only a small kiosk was offering small items. We thought that was a real shame. It was also not clear on the website that it was closed; it only said that there was the option of drinking coffee etc. in the forecourt.

Thanks to the flexibility of the staff, we were able to bring our entry time forward and so did not have to wait 2 hours for the tour!

The tour was really very good! The lady spoke loudly, clearly and distinctly - gave us a lot of background information and although it was not our first time here, we learned a lot of new things! She also answered our questions!

We are looking forward to the Venus Grotto being open again and will definitely come back - hopefully when the restaurant is open!

Linderhof Palace is another palatial building by Ludwig II. It is no where as expansive as his Neuschwanstein Castle. The architecture was more refine and traditional looking. The interior was not embellished as much as the Neuschwanstein. There was a garden courtyard in front. All the statues were boxed up to prevent damage by winter weather. Possibly visiting the Linderhof during the summer months would be better.

I’m a sucker for a castle. I’m really happy we stopped here with our small group of ten people traveling together. We were able to hop into an English language tour about 45-minutes after arriving. We grabbed coffee at the shop and then wandered to the palace location. The gardens are really amazing considering that the location both when built and now are pretty remote. The guided tour was very informative and I appreciated the comparisons to Versailles, which we’ve also visited…this place is MUCH less crowded and a fraction of the size. The no photos inside is silly given modern iPhone technology. Not good for little kids/toddlers since it is a cramped tour and no one wants screaming kids on a tour. If visiting this fall 2023 be aware of restoration projects that may impact ability to see all rooms. Overall I would recommend visiting on a second trip to the area or visit after seeing Neuschwanstein.
