Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This part of Herculaneum is the Terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus, named in honour of the eponymous Roman senator who was a supporter of the future Augustus, Octavian. The terrace is a viewpoint of the town below and is lined with sculptures, including at least one of the senator. It’s a good viewpoint and one where you can get a panoramic of the town.

Imagine what this place must have been like before the tragedy. Instead of a wall of volcanic deposits stratified for tens of meters, it must have faced the open sea. Suburban terrace, therefore outside the walls, but in direct communication with the "fornices", the arches built under the terrace and open towards the beach where the fishermen stored their tools. It housed, as it does today, the statue and funerary monument of Marco Nonio Balbo, the patrician originally from Nuceria, who however had chosen Herculaneum as his elective homeland and had filled it with benefits. It was therefore a very significant landmark of a city like Herculaneum, which had an enviable position, on the plain but high up on the coast. It must have been a painting of a haunting beauty, brutally erased in a single day of the apocalypse: as evidenced by the chilling expanses of skeletons discovered not long ago in the "fornices".

Herculaneum
Visiting Herculaneum from Sorrento is easy to do yourself. Catch a train from Sorrento to Ercolano. Cheap - a few euros each way. Return tickets available. Frequent train service. Ensure you get off in Ercolano Scavi - travelling from Sorrento, there is another Ercolano station immediately before Ercolano. Exit the station and follow the road to the right. Follow the Main Street downhill to the gates of Herculaneum...about 500 metres. This historic site is fascinating. One note of CAUTION ...on the road from the station is the Ristorante Pizzeria Vesuvio....it’s the one on the corner of the road junction (roundabout). You may see young (or not so young) girls waving menus and doing silly dances to get you to eat there. Avoid this pizzeria at all costs ...it’s a rip-off and hygiene standards are poor.

Not totally destroyed and lost by the eruption of Vesuvius. Preserved in the volcanic muds that enveloped the city.

The same as Parco Acheologico di Ercolano. Look it up, there are a lot of reviews under that name. A must visit if you have time.

The main photo here of La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo shows the most interesting and informative view of the Ercolano archeological site and old seafront. Ercolano is a much easier visit and more compact than Pompeii and we were so glad we used a private guide for our visit. We also found the guide's information about how the eruption of Vesuvius was experienced differently at Ercolano versus Pompeii. Immensely interesting and a very worthwhile visit.

To preface this review, we approached this without prior research. We also did not get a guided tour or audio guide and went purely off the information booklet and signs provided. We went here before heading to pompeii which we visited at 1.30pm by comparison.

Firstly it is a much easier viewing due to smaller amounts of people wandering around however equally the site is smaller so groups are even more noticeable. Whilst it might be hard to get photos without people it is possible to limit the amount in the way. We also found that pompeii could get repetitive and a lot of the same after a while, so a smaller site helps look past this problem. There are also far fewer 'landmarks' or 'key areas' where people must see so people spread out quite wide.

Do note that we only went of the information we overheard or was listed and it was rather minimal however they did offer guided tours. On the point of guided tours we were offered one and they told us that its cheaper if a lot of people come, so its not a set rate? and that they have access to locked off areas which I personally did not see any off or hear about so I would be careful not to be drawn in by these claims. However as there is a lack of info about the area it might be worth getting a guide.

Overall I preferred it to pompeii as it is equally impressive in appearance despite being smaller if not more impressive when you think how they never knew of this before it was accidentally found and dug up. It allows you to discover similar things as pompeii but without it becoming tedious and it even has some remade human remains whereas we couldn't find any remains in pompeii. Side note, Its also a lot easier on the legs.

You would have to walk down a long ramp to see it close up, but you can get a bird's eye view of the whole terrace on the road that leads from the ticket office to the entrance bridge. It looks pretty interesting.
